Cowtipper Old-Timey Member Posted October 3 Posted October 3 These were mentioned in the Mets Roster Central thread, but as it is the offseason and news is sparse this time of year, I thought it might be worth mentioning here, too. Pitcher Kevin Herget and infielder Zack Short, who both played briefly for the Mets in 2026, have declared free agency. Herget, 35, first joined the club in 2025, going 0-0 with a 3.00 ERA in 6 relief appearances; in the minors, he'd gone 2-0 with a 2.81 mark in 23 games (3 starts) for Syracuse. He followed that up with another solid line on the farm in 2026, going 1-1 with a 2.97 ERA in 19 games (8 starts) across four stops. That culminated in a single scoreless relief appearance with the big club on August 1. The 31-year-old Short first played in the Mets system in 2024. His major league contribution was minimal, as he had a single hit in 9 at-bats; he was gone from the organization by early May. He returned to the Mets in 2026, hitting .071 in 14 at-bats, including 7 strikeouts. Notably, he made a relief appearance on the mound in a blowout game in June, pitching a perfect inning. At Syracuse, he hit .233/.359/.383 in 42 games.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted October 4 Posted October 4 Herget and Short, along with Chris Devenski, enter minor-league free agency as potential two-time ex-Mets.
