The New York Mets have taken a chance on an outfielder.

Jared Oliva was claimed by the Mets on Tuesday off waivers from the San Francisco Giants. Oliver was activated by the Giants off the 60-day injured list and then designated for assignment. The Mets had an open spot on the 40-man roster, so no countermove will be needed there. Oliva does have an option left, so he could be sent to Triple-A Syracuse or added to the major-league roster.

The speedy 30-year-old was a feel-good story for the Giants, making the Opening Day roster after not having played in the majors since 2021 with the Pittsburgh Pirates. In addition to the Pirates, who drafted him in the seventh round in 2017 out of Arizona, Oliva has spent time with the Los Angeles Angels, Seattle Mariners and Milwaukee Brewers before signing a minor-league deal with the Giants this offseason.

Oliva appeared in seven games with the Giants this year, going 1-for-7 before sustaining a hamate bone injury, which required surgery.

Another headscratcher, but since I love David Stearns and my shrine to Him only grows larger every day, I can only assume this is part of his esoteric and genius 9-D chess to lead us to the Holy Land by the end of the year. We foolish mortals see him as a 30-year-old hitter with a .175 batting average, but his super secret analytics say he's actually a .500 hitter with 95 home run per year potential, we just don't see it because we aren't super smart like David Stearns.
