I haven't seen the media mention Alonso as an MVP option even once

That's just wrong

There was an article on CBS talking about candidates other than Ohtani and Judge that did mention Lindor and got my attention

Get it done Blackburn

He's going to have to nudge his OBA significantly above the .313 mark before he gets much consideration from me.

13 walks (and 1 HBP) in 271 PA so far.

Your point is not lost on me, but his elite defense has contributed beaucoup points to his value.

That made me curious, so I looked up the DWar for each of them:

PCA +1.2

Alonso - .6

Ohtani -.6

The first two seem reasonable.

Yes, PCA is a good defender and we've seen Pete play good (at times excellent) defense this year, and for some reason, first basemen start out with a negative defensive score, BUT

How does Ohtani even have a defensive score when he hasn't played one inning in the field this year?

Doesn't make sense.

Defensive WAR is a sub-optimal metric.

Basically, all defensive metrics are sub-optimal, but defensive WAR is probably moreso than some others.

Sub optimal is one thing, but Ohtani's should logically be non-existent.

How do the numbers folks explain something like that?

It certainly has to exist, if only in the negative range.

Non-existent would calculate to zero, which would be markedly better than Alonso's.

That's a silly to me as putting ingredient labels on spring water.

They should not have any defensive rating for someone who doesn't play defense.

It should be shown as 'N/A".

I do not think I was silly at all.

Not giving designated hitters a negative score for defense would give them an overall defensive rating that is higher than many players who play defense, and would advantage them unfairly.

That would not be very helpful or useful or indicative.

Does anybody else think that this is silly? It is just the way statistics work. Creatures who live below sea level have a negative figure for their elevation. N/A would not allow for meaningful comparison and contrast to and measurement against other creatures, which is the idea.

That makes numerical sense.
