G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted May 4, 2025 Posted May 4, 2025 The oldest living Met, Jim Marshall (soon to be 94) from the Original cast, will be honored at Chase Field for his endurance when his 1962 employer comes to town.Nice story of a helluva baseball life here from Bob Nightengale.“I worked in baseball for 70 years," said Marshall, who turns 94 later in May, “and as a baseball player or manager, we always dream of being No. 1.“Well, I finally made it."His greatest memory of that historic season where the Mets went 40-120 and produced the most losses in a single season until the Chicago White Sox toppled it last year?“Opening Day at the Polo Grounds," Marshall says. “They were doing the player introductions, and when they got to me, they booed the hell out of me because Gil Hodges wasn't playing. He was hurt, but they just buried me.“Welcome to New York."https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/columnist/bob-nightengale/2025/05/04/jim-marshall-mlb-baseball-mets/83435470007/https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/columnist/bob-nightengale/2025/05/04/jim-marshall-mlb-baseball-mets/83435470007/
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted May 5, 2025 Author Posted May 5, 2025 Jay Horwitz on Jim Marshall…One the perks of being our alumni director is that I am in the middle of a host of great human-interest stories. The Jim Marshall tale is one of the best.At 93, Jim is the oldest living Met. He will turn 94 on May 25. Before we visit the Diamondbacks tonight, the Arizona resident will receive a jersey with number 93 on the back. The 1962 Met was acquired from the San Francisco Giants after the 1961 Expansion Draft.“All during my career I wanted to be Number One in some category,” Jim told me over the phone with a laugh. “It took me a while but I finally made it.”Marshall only stayed with the Mets the first month the season. On May 7, he was traded to Pittsburgh for pitcher Vinegar Bend Mizell.“My stay in New York was short but I really enjoyed my time with the Mets,” he went on.“I was playing first base for Gil Hodges who was hurt at the time. Gil was a great teacher and a great man. I was proud to have known him.”https://metsinsider.mlblogs.com/oldest-living-met-to-be-honored-tonight-712f9086b5bfhttps://metsinsider.mlblogs.com/oldest-living-met-to-be-honored-tonight-712f9086b5bf
