RIP Rob Gardner

Rob Gardner, who pitched in 46 games for the Mets in 1965 and 1966, has died at 78.

That was one of only eight tie games in Mets history.

Not a lot of productivity out of the nine-hole that game. After Gardner went oh-for-five with four strikeouts, both Jimmie Schaffer and Ed Kranepool struck out as pinch-hitters in that spot.

He threw those zeros against a pretty good lineup that included righties Dick Allen, Dick Stuart, Alex Jonson and (a young)Adolfo Phillips.

His arm didn't fall off.

He ended up pitching six more years in the majors.

I think pitch counts these days may hurt development more than they produce injuries. (with no stats to back that up.)

I've always remembered the Al Jackson game (he's still my all-time favorite Met)and had forgotten the Gardner game until Rob passed away and it showed up in the obits.

Your line that Dick Young wrote that Rob Gardner was one of the young Mets who made Al Jackson expendable was something I hadn't remembered.
