What I'm seeing on Google isn't encouraging. At all.

What is flexor tendinitis? It is swelling of the tendon(s) that bends the fingers. Flexor tendinitis is also called Trigger Finger. The flexor tendons are smooth, thick ropes that allow the finger to bend and straighten. There are no muscles in the fingers.

The only effective treatment for a flexor tendon injury is to surgically repair the tendon(s) by sewing the cut ends together. Your hand surgeon will locate the ends of the tendon and stitch them back together. If the nerve has also been cut, it will be repaired at the same time.

How long does flexor tendonitis take to heal? Your tendon will take up to 12 weeks to completely heal and it is important to follow all advice to avoid rupturing your tendon.

Can flexor tendons heal on their own? Flexor tendon injuries do not heal by themselves and frequently require surgery to put the injured tendon back to its normal position. When surgery is required, a splint and hand therapy may be used after the procedure to protect you and to aid in recovery.

Non-operative treatment includes resting, using ice to reduce swelling, and taking anti-inflammatory medication (if advised by your doctor). It's a good idea to avoid activities that involve gripping, or repeatedly squeezing with your hand while you are recovering as these can put more stress on the tendon. If the symptoms do not improve, you may offered cortisone injections; however, if the tendon has been ruptured, you may be advised to have flexor tendon repair surgery.
