MFS62 isn't kidding. Ashburn and Coleman were seventh and eighth on the team in home runs in 1962. Ashburn had a career-high 7. He hit as many home runs at the Polo Grounds that year, 6, as he did in his entire career in Philadelphia. (Over half his career home runs were at the Polo Grounds.)

Yeah, I guezzed wrong. They would have had to make a late run, as neither hit their first until relatively late in the season.

Good on you, Choo.

Thank you. I guess you have to be a dinosaur to remember that far back. :)

Least games to 100 home runs:

Ryan Howard - 325 games.

Pete Alonso - 91 home runs/307 games played.

Really falling off the record pace. Not much room for error. Nine homers in 18 games is an 81 HR pace for the season.

The Mets are almost nowhere to be found in non-pitching top-ten lists. I mean, yeah, you've got Javy Baez leading the National League in strikeouts, but that's hardly an achievement, and even if it was, it would be one hardly related to the Mets.

But the homerun race has just become interesting. Baez and Pete Alonso are currently tied (along with three others) for fourth, but that's deceptive, as the guy in third is in the clubhouse, and the guy in first may well be joining him shortly.

  NL Home Runs

    1) Tatis, SDP: 31

    2) Schwarber, WSN: 25

    3) Acuña, ATL: 24

    T4) Alonso, NYM: 23

    T4) Freeman, ATL: 23

    T4) Baez, CHC/NYM: 23

    T4) Escobar, ARI/MIL: 23

    T4) Hoskins, PHI: 23

    T9) Muncy , LAD: 22

    T9) Duval, MIA/ATL: 22

    T9) Riley, ATL: 22

That looks like a sprint to the end, but it also looks kinda like Alonso has the inside lane. Too bad Tatis and Acuña went down, though.

In case there was any doubt that Luis is managing this team like no skipper before him, this is really uncharted territory.

Two things seemed set in stone in the National League homerun race. The first was that Fernando Tatis' season wasn't going to grow after a third injury this season to his left shoulder. The second was that Kyle Schwarber had seemingly also entered the clubhouse after being traded to the American League.

Well, while that second assumption has proved safe, the first has not, as Tatis, Jr. is back on the field and once again crushing baseballs. This makes the race decidedly less wide open, but as two Mets are in pursuit, it seems prudent to remember that power comes in bursts.
