Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted March 23, 2021 Posted March 23, 2021 Anthony DiComo reveals (to me for the first time) that Peterson's dad was a horse trainer famous for Seattle Slew's Derby success. Also that was injured in a "serious golf course accident" that left him disabled and later died of an "accidental overdose related to a medical error" when David was still a youngster. The vagueness of the description (golf course accident? medical error?) was interesting enough to me to look for some details. He was injured apparently when a cart fell on him, though not sure who dropped it. It left him disabled, using a walker and in need of additional surgeries when he ODed. His obits say he was a little know barn guy who took on Slew when he was ill with a viral infection, got him healthy and away he went. Post Slew, battled drug and alcohol issues.Anyway DiComo's story is pretty good in setting up how the tragedy -- along a broken leg-- plays into Petey's demeanor and suggests he's gonna be a rotation guy. https://www.mlb.com/news/david-peterson-s-path-to-metshttps://www.mlb.com/news/david-peterson-s-path-to-mets
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted March 23, 2021 Posted March 23, 2021 This https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-2004-nov-25-me-peterson25-story.htmlgenerally poorly phrased obit from the LA Times initially seems to suggest a golf course fell on him, until you realize they just put the clauses in all the wrong places.
