Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted August 10, 2020 Posted August 10, 2020 So how's this for a first impression ...The Braves claimed six year veteran [sDP, PIT] starter/reliever Robbie Erlin off waivers from the Pirates this weekend to shore up their injured staff (see Siroka, Mike)So when starter Sean Newcombe got into early trouble they brought Erlin in for his ATL debut in the 2nd inning in a bases loaded situation ... and his very first pitch for his new team: Grand Slam (to Didi Gregorius)12-1 Philly in the 5th

Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted August 11, 2020 Author Posted August 11, 2020 So I (not surprisingly) bailed on Monday night's game so I didn't hear whether or not Gary revisited the topic of the 'Mercy Rule' that he brought up earlier in the game while noting the lopsided Phils/Braves score. What he said was that, in the midst of a pandemic season, that ending a game early is something they should adopt when the score is so one-sided. Little did he realize that the Mets were soon to be in an evenmore lopsided situation.Anyway, the kicker to all this is that the Braves put up a 7-spot in the 9th inning. They still lost by a not-all-that-close score of 13-8, but it brings up the problem of what exactly qualifies as deserving of amercy ending.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted August 11, 2020 Author Posted August 11, 2020 So, as Gary just mentioned, the Marlins & Blue Jays are headed to the 10th inning after the Jays got 3 in top 9 to tie it.But here's the real question: Seeing as how the game is being played in Buffalo, if the Jays wind up winning this thing should we refer to it as a 'shuffle-off win?
