Edgy MD Site Manager Posted July 19, 2020 Posted July 19, 2020 This season may last 60 days, or it may last 10. But some of these guys are here for this year only. I've with thinking all the Esix Sneads of the world — the guys who appeared most briefly in uniform — as Mets, just as validly as Tug McGraw or Keith Hernandez or Edgardo Alfonzo. But some of these guys — the Jared Hughes or the Ryley Gilliams — are here for this year and likely this year only. Even if this season is a complete farce that gets the plug pulled after a matter of weeks, I assume the stats will count at the ends of these players' careers, but it's going to be hard to bend my head around historically accepting the Metliness of a guy whose tenure was ephemeral, in a season that was farcical, played before cardboard fans, and possibly producing no champion.Adding that the team lost their manager before he even started, and the owners have the whole shebang on the block, and it may just add to the whole chimerical nature of the enterprise.Plus, the president is an alien and I keep falling out of my bed.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted July 19, 2020 Posted July 19, 2020 I wouldn't be at all surprised if they pulled the plug in August. I'm sure the stats would count as official
Lefty Specialist Old-Timey Member Posted July 19, 2020 Posted July 19, 2020 Shawn Hare and Frank Seminara. Both appeared only in the 1994 season where the plug was pulled and no champion was crowned. Still Metly, wherever they may be. Plus they had to wear those butt-ugly script uniforms, the least Metly unis of all (with the exception of the Mercury Mets).Even if they play 5 games, the stats will count. But I'm getting a growing feeling that things will go south and MLB will desperately try to keep things going, moving the Blue Jays to Buffalo and the Marlins to god-knows-where and letting kids who have no right to be on a major league field play in games because real major leaguers are sick.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted July 19, 2020 Posted July 19, 2020 I can definitely see that scenario.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted July 19, 2020 Author Posted July 19, 2020 I saw Shawn Hare's debut. I was there with Fabio and Donna with tickets that I won from answering a question put to me live on the radio by Bill Fucking Mazer. That happened, man.But this — and I'm writing as a guy who is in bed feeling like shit, with a heat index at Venus levels, and I'm going to get a Covid test tomorrow, so I recognize I'm only partially rational — but it just feels so abstract.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted July 19, 2020 Posted July 19, 2020 I hear you! (And I hope you don't have COVID!)I can't help but think that the World Championship this year, should we get that far, will be seriously diminished. Do I even want the Mets to win a diminished title? I feel somewhat torn.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted July 19, 2020 Author Posted July 19, 2020 Right? So very much torn. The Detroit Tigers won the 1945 championship and by 1946 most of the players in the armed services were again eligible to play. I wonder how fans looked at that championship before they next won the title in 1968. "Your team sucks! They haven't won since 1935!!""Well ... you're forgetting 1945. They won then too!""HAHAHAHA!! You actually count that? OK, I stand corrected ... you had the best assemblage of gimps and cowards during World War II. Congratulations. You must be so proud.""Conscientous objectors aren't cowards.""What's that? I can't hear you.""I hate you."
Ceetar Grand Central Contributor Posted July 19, 2020 Posted July 19, 2020 I can't imagine them shutting it down if they get started. It would take some really dire. They're not doing a particularly good job at the whole testing thing, but they are doing it, and it will help. It doesn't seem like any team is doing something like group inside cafeteria dining (but maybe they are, who knows..) so like, worst case is a few teammates show up positive, they cancel two games while everyone gets tested, and most people probably pass, they replace them, and keep going.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted July 19, 2020 Posted July 19, 2020 I think the Commissioner has the authority to order changes of venue for any games. He should be at least thinking about pulling the Marlins and Rays out of Florida. And the same goes for the Texas and Arizona teams.
LWFS Old-Timey Member Posted July 19, 2020 Posted July 19, 2020 Pulling the Marlins and Rays out of Florida is like a negroni before a transatlantic flight-- ALWAYS a good idea.
