RIP Gary Kolb, 1940-2019

Outfielder Gary Kolb, a Met for forty games in 1965, died on July 3 in Charleston, W.Va., at the age of 79. His greatest legacy -- beyond his one home run and one appearance at third base -- was his inclusion in the trade that brought 1969 world champ Don Cardwell to New York following the 1966 season, a campaign the entirety of which he spent in Jacksonville alongside the likes of Seaver, Harrelson, Boswell and two McGraws.

He was one of the kinds of player I wanted the Mets to try to get in the first few years. At least he was young, and I thought showed potential
