Win one for 'bucket and sea' !!

NYM (35‑40) Jason Vargas (LHP, 3-3, 3.74)

CHC (41‑33) Yu Darvish (RHP, 2-3, 4.65)

“Darvish Vargas” is not an ideal three-times-fast matchup, and not just from a pace-of-play standpoint.

Gotta like the McNeil Kaboom!

Vargas -- who has never lost to the Cubs -- continues to pitch decently!

Well, he was pitching well. Not as good now.

An umpsterfuck is going on right here. But it was a swing and miss.

McNeil may be getting better as the season progresses. Unfortunately, it may be asking too much of him to become an MVP.

All the umpire had to do was make the obvious call but it leads to 5 or more minutes of everyone standing around. Of course, we don't want to criticize the umpires because they are so sensitive.

Conforta-boom ties it at 4. He's really heating up!

I took the Wrigley tour last year. It's a good tour, with the clubhouses and all.

One thing I learned: The baskets on the wall are not to stop potential interference. The tour guide said people used to run across the top of the wall, and the basket was to catch them when they fell to keep them from going all the way to the ground. Might have been a tall tale, but wouldn't be shocking, either.

For a guy who supposedly couldn't play defense, Alonso hasn't been awful. Nice pick off!

It would be nice if someone/anyone threw the ball to Alonso's chest, rather than over his head or in the dirt.

Mets taking the lead.

Hopefully they can hold on, even after going to the pen early. Lunchy's games have been much better for him than last year.

I wonder if a new pitching coach and new pitching strategist and a new bullpen coach will lead to a review of the Mets' kid-gloves-for-Lugo policy.

And suddenly it's the Cubs who are making odd outs (the Rizzo HBP/swing) and outs on the bases (a pick-off, plus Rizzo trapped between 2nd & 3rd).

Our side has been the one making far too many of those lately.

Uh, Gary & Ron: you can't be having this Lugo vs Diaz discussion without at least bringing up the fact that Lugo was due to hit this inning.

It's a no-brainer that you PH for him rather than essentially giving up any chance to add to a one run lead.

Depends on how much faith you've lost or retain in your alternative.

Once was the time when it wasn't automatic to pinch-hit for the starter with eight innings under his belt in that situation.

Cubs fans get far too riled up over routine fly balls.

It's an obvious thing in the bottom of the 9th in a one run game, but they've been doing it for the previous 17 innings too.

Once was the time when the starter -- even the fourth time through the lineup and 100+ pitches in -- was considered leaps and bounds ahead of anyone in the bullpen.

And I don't mind the Lugo vs Diaz argument, only that they were having it as if the third spot in the lineup for the coming inning wasn't even a consideration.

Four and a third scoreless by the shmullpen, plus Pounders left a runner stranded when he came on for Vargas.

As I wrote, it depends on how much faith you've lost or retained in your options.

This game will not be remembered as the game where the catcher almost hit his pitcher in the head. Nice to win one.
