Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted September 4, 2018 Posted September 4, 2018 Question = When was the last time a NYM position player drove in a run while deGrom was in the game. That was four starts and 23 innings pitched ago.In that Aug 18th game in Philly, Jeff McNeil drove in the 3rd and final NYM run of the game with a 7th inning triple. JdG would go on to pitch the 7th thru 9th innings to finish the complete game 3-1 win. JdG = 9 Innings / 1 Run (none earned)Since then:- Aug 23: Todd Frazier hit a solo HR for the only NYM run of the game but that came after deGrom had left. Final was Giants 3 - Mets 1. JdG = 6 Innings / 2 Runs (1 earned)- Aug 28: deGrom drives in the only NYM run of the game in what was eventually a 2-1 11 inning Met loss. JdG = 8 Innings / 1 Run- Sept 3: deGrom drove in the only NYM run of the game until after he left with the game tied. Nimmo's game-winning 3R HR came later and got credited to Drew Smith. JdG = 6 Innings / 1 RunIn the last four games, he has allowed three earned runs and driven in twoThis is starting to remind me of the year that Pudge Rodriguez stole more bases than he allowed as a catcher.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted September 4, 2018 Posted September 4, 2018 Amazingly, there was one guy who pitched enough to qualify for the ERA title while managing to drive in more runs than he allowed — some old guy named George Herman Ruth. He pitched 166 1/3 innings in 1918, while allowing 51 runs — 41 of them earned. Both numbers are below the 61 he drove in, while appearing in 75 more games in total than he pitched in.Ohtani has certainly shown the capacity to join the club.
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted September 4, 2018 Posted September 4, 2018 I think I'd be ok with using deGrom as a sub at SS over Reyes.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted September 4, 2018 Author Posted September 4, 2018 Looks like 'only' about 15 or so runs driven in by Ruth in 1918 came while playing as a pitcher. And, so far anyway, none of Ohtani's have seeing as how he plays in the wrong league for that sort of thing, even though he's the first player since Ruth to hit at least 15 HRs in a season whilst pitching over a certain number of innings.

Possibly Drysdale.
