Rumors are rumors, but one thing that seems to put the A's on the inside
track is the news tonight that they've released veteran righthander Santiago
Casilla. Casilla had an ERA of just 3.16 this season, but his walks have
been up and the A's have been using him with decreasing frequency.

Santiago has spent his entire 15-year career pitching for Bay Area teams,
has a fistful of rings from his days in San Francisco, and owns a 0.92
post-season ERA over the course of a not-insignificant total of 19 2/3
innings. So the move has struck many in baseball as surprisingly decisive by Billy
Beane, who will have to eat the remainder of Casilla's $6 million salary.

All the executives I've talked to say there's another shoe ready to drop
in Oakland. Met fans tonight are wondering if that shoe is big and
Domincan, and how Oakland TV announcers Glen Kuiper and Ray Fosse
might add to the many ways "Jeurys" can be pronounced!

No trade announcement yet. It must have been a sleepless night for Familia. I'm sure that Rosenthal and Olney were up all night trying to get the scoop. If it is Oakland, then Sandy is already there for an A's reunion this weekend. BTW, Jeff McNeil didn't play for the 51s last night so maybe he's on the way to New York.

I also really like Familia. I hate that it's necessary.

As far as the offseason goes, he's one of several closers I would consider. He's more defense-dependent than most closers (especially infield defense), and the Mets' ability to improve there would affect how much I value him.

As for prospects -- their top 3 are really good. I'd love to get Jesus Luzardo, but that is probably wishful thinking. AJ Puk is recovering from TJS, but I could live with that if the A's can't. Sean Murphy is a very nice catching prospect. I don't know if a rental could get us one of them, though.

No trade yet, also no uniform in Familia's locker. He's still on roster but won't be available. Mets have a mystery pitcher ready to step in should a deal be consummated by gametime, but Callaway, who is on top of everything in this organization, says that isn't likely.

Not illegal, quite common. For example, they flew Nido up to Toronto on July 4 when they weren't sure if Mesoraco had sustained a concussion. Mesoraco was cleared to play and Nido was sent back to the minors without having been activated.

Scuttlebutt suggests the objective of this deal is getting the million bucks in international draft $$ that might allow the Mets to sign Cuban uber prospect Victor Victor Mesa. Because Cubans face a different route to international draft hes not yet been declared eligible even though he is considered the best prospect in this class. Most clubs have already spent their $$, so this could be a brilliant move.

Or not.

Seeing as how the Mets have rarely been victors twice in a row since April, this would be a step up.
