Howie Kendrick is supposedly getting his tires kicked by the Mets, and he may have a perfectly good chance to be a less volatile version of the super-utility guy that José Reyes never quite became.

After spending the first half of his career as a regular secondbaseman, Howie in recent years has floated from team to team (Dodgers, Phillies, Nats), and from position to position (182 games in left, 93 at first, 18 at third). While a lot of his production is tied up in his batting average, it's been pretty consistently high. He's walked more as his career has progressed, he still gets around well, and he seems to have taken to the National League in recent years, where his versatility makes him a useful guy on double switches, whether entering the game or moving around to accommodate somebody else. He's got a big mean swing reminiscent of Juan Uribe, and I can hear Keith saying "He doesn't get cheated" even now.

Howie is a free agent, projected by Steamer to go .274 / .334 / .413 // .747 in 2018, which is OK, depending on what position or positions you're getting that from.

The Mets could use a rightanded reserve outfielder (assuming they don't bring in somebody that relegates Lagares to the bench), and Kendrick qualifies. There are a few other options, too (Austin Jackson, for example), so I'd be surprised if they act quickly here. But I'd be neither surprised nor disappointed if Kendrick cane here.

Seriously dude, there is one "Howie" and his last name is "Rose" and I thought that he was retiring or Mets management canned him for some stupid reason. Given that Howie Kendrick's last name is almost the same as a Temptation (the ballplayer is a singular Kendrick), perhaps the title could have been "Are We Tempted By Kendrick?".

He's a .750 player who could easily go 100 points lower or 100 points higher, and his PT should be pinned on which of those he gravitates toward, but his versatility suggests he's a good choice for the 25th man on any roster, and and shaves off some of the uncertainty with regard to all of the team's young infielders.

He strikes me as a good bet for a guy who will still be playing at 40.

If you want an Eddie Kendricks themed thread title, I'll suggest Keep on Fucking (with us): They get Stanton and we're talking Howie Kendrick here.

You actually don't have to talk about him. And we're also talking about Stanton in another thread.

This thread was put up before that deal was reported. All teams have a 25th man, the Yankees too.

Kendrick is alright. He seemed to be mailing it in with Philly then rebounded with Washington. Very situational guy.
