  1. Cram, Batista and Barajas are correct. Batista and Barajas were teammates with Arizona when they beat the Yankees in 2001. Two new questions have been added. 1. The Mets were going to trade for Dickie Thon. The deal was canceled at the last minute by Owner Linda de Roulet. What was that reason? Hint: Consider the year Thon was born when this trade might have happened. Hint: It had something to do with his age. Hint: His name "Dickie" is considered a diminutive. Hint: De Roulet thought he might have been too ........ something. What was that something? Hint: https://i.imgur.com/zIo1B75.png> --originally posted by "NJMetfan4life" 2. A previous question was "What two pitchers in Mets history threw a one-hitter and the only hit they gave up was to the pitcher?". The answers were Jon Matlack and Jack Hamilton. Can you name the two pitchers they surrendered their hits to? --originally posted by "Joe Rigatoni" 3. Who are the only two pitchers in Mets history to strike out the side on nine pitches? --originally posted by "Joe Rigatoni" 4. The Mets went 9-1 in the first 10 games in which Ike Davis appeared. In those games, Ike hit .355 with a .548 SLG, one homer, 3 doubles, 6 RBIs, and 5 runs scored. It's a pretty rare feat for a team to do put up a 9-1 record in the first ten games in which a batter (non-pitcher) appears, now having occurred only 32 times in the years 1920-1939, 1952-2010. But even more rare is when a team puts up a 10-0 record in the first ten games a batter plays with a team. It has happened a mere five times in those years. And happily -- for this thread -- one of those five times was by the New York Mets. Name the batter who helped the Mets win the first ten games in which he played. (This question is through April 2010, I'm not sure if it has happened since then). --originally posted by "milladrive" 5. An event more rare than hitting for the cycle, one Met player ran for the cycle, getting himself thrown out at every base in one game. 2. Koosman is correct, well done. Apparently Steve Trachsel also had a one-hitter whose only hit allowed was to a pitcher (Chin hui-Tsao). That one flew under the radar. 1. In April 2010, a Met hit a home run off a former World Series winning teammate. Please give me the name of the Met and please give me the name of the pitcher he hit it off of who was a former World Series winning teammate. Hint: The pitcher played for the Mets in 2011 and 2012 and the other individual, a catcher, played for them in 2010. Hint: The pitcher was an 18-year veteran who played for 11 major league teams. The other player was a 14-year vet who played for seven major league teams. Hint: The pitcher was born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic and the other player was born in Ontario, CA. Hint: The pitcher once threw a shutout on the final day of the regular season for the Mets. The other player started off hot for NY in his one year for the club, hitting 11 home runs with 30 RBI through May—then he fell apart. 4. Matlack is correct. Bob Shaw is incorrect—the correct answer might or might not have been traded by the New York Mets to the California Angels for Nick Willhite.
  5. New day, new hints added.
  6. Exciting so far!
  7. They've also recently released minor leaguers Aaron Martinez and Hale Sims.
  8. New day, new hints added above.
  9. It wasn't Leach, but that seems like an obvious choice. The correct answer wasn't with the Mets long, but he did cram quite a bit of success into relatively few innings. In just over 22 frames one year, he had a 1.61 ERA.
  10. Seaver threw plenty of one-hitters with New York and Martinez contributed, as well, however neither gave up their lone hits to an opposing pitcher. One might've been an early Met who was once traded for Nick Willhite and the other might've been an incorrect answer recently given by another member on a different question.
  11. I've only been a member of this forum for a little while, but I've been a big fan of the site for years. It's one of my favorites.
  12. It wasn't Matlack, but a good guess. It was the other Met from the era not named Seaver that accumulated a lot of wins...It was more than just a no-hitter, it was a perfect game, but Jim Bunning's performance is correct. Zachry and Swan are correct, as well. New questions have been added, with hints added for the others. 1. In April 2010, a Met hit a home run off a former World Series winning teammate. 13. William Woods, who has scant major league experience elsewhere and who played in their system in 2023, has been released.
  14. That's correct, well done. A new question has been added and hints have been provided for the rest. 1. In April 2010, a Met hit a home run off a former World Series winning teammate. Please give me the names of both Mets pitchers. Hint: Pitcher 1: His name, one could say, was two first names. Pitcher 2: An ornithologist might be intrigued by his name. --originally posted by "Joe Rigatoni" 5. When Jeff Francoeur and Rod Barajas hit two home runs each on Friday night to become the first pair of Mets teammates to hit two home runs in the same home game since it was done by Joe Christopher and Bob "Hawk" Taylor against the Phillies on June 20, 1964 when the Mets won 7-3. So my question is what memorable event happened at Shea Stadium the very next day (June 21, 1964)? --originally posted by "Joe Rigatoni" Running tally of correct guessers: Johnny Lunchbucket: 63 Edgy MD: 54 stevejrogers: 41 batmagadanleadoff: 19 metsmarathon: 6 Benjamin Grimm: 4 MFS62: 3 DocTee: 2 Marshmallowmilkshake: 1 The Hot Corner: 1
  15. That's correct, well done. A couple new questions have been added, with hints added for the rest. 1. Who penned the "Marvelous Marv" locker sign that gave the media the idea to refer to Throneberry as Marvelous Marv? Hint: Pitched for the Mets from 1962 to 1964. Hint: Was 8-19 in 1962. Hint: Pitched for the Reds from 1957 to 1961 before joining the Mets. Hint: Was involved in this trade: "May 8, 1964: Traded by the New York Mets with a player to be named later to the Milwaukee Braves for Roy McMillan. The New York Mets sent Adrian Garrett (June 17, 1964) to the Milwaukee Braves to complete the trade." Hint: https://i.imgur.com/dy7e0IG.jpg> Hint: Was 12-34 with a 5.22 ERA in his Mets career. Hint: (from Wikipedia): "After receiving a master's degree in thermodynamics, [he] retired in 1964 at age 28 to take a job with the Chrysler Corporation. He then worked in senior management positions at Rockwell International and at Masco, and later became a professor of industrial management at Northwestern University." --originally posted by "theAmazingMet" 2. 16. Bob Johnson is correct. As for #5, one might say it has something to do with his looks. And Koosman is correct—do you know what year that happened?
  17. Another rotund one who the Mets kept around about seven games too long.
  18. He held a 0.00 ERA through five April appearances, then the wheels fell off.
  19. Slugged .643 at Syracuse last year—that's impressive. Led the league in home runs in the shortened 2020 season, which raised his stock a bit, as I recall.
  20. Decent power, decent OPS+. Good minor league depth.
  21. Well done! It's always good to clear out a question that's been lingering for a while. A new one has been added below. 1. 22. Unfortunately, 23 and the Midwest League are incorrect. Hint: Check the hints. (You're very close with the 23, however). The record does have to do with the league and the number of strikeouts. So I basically just answered that for you...but what was the league?
  23. Alspach is correct. Can you name the number of strikeouts and what other record he set? It might or might not have to do with the league he pitched in.
  24. Slaughter and Bell are correct! Well done. From the other website: Although the Mets had a number of ex-Major Leaguers playing with their AA affiliate in Mobile (most notably Big Jim Fridley and Jim Derrington), most were loaned to the team and returned to their old organizations once the 1962 season began; that or they just retired. However, Slaughter actually signed a contract to play and manage in the New York Mets organization. He never managed after 1961, instead opting to retire, but he did sign the contract, and that's what counts. 1. I am the holder of the record for most strikeouts in a single, complete, 9-inning ballgame in the New York Mets organization. I did it in 1962, the first year the Mets were in existence, and was immediately a top prospect. But a sore arm kept me out of the Major Leagues. Who am I, and how many batters did I strike out? Further, what other record can my pitching performance that day claim to hold? Hint: Never reached the majors, peaking at Triple-A. The number of batters he struck out was greater than the MLB record...and he didn't just set the Mets organization record. Hint: His career in the Mets system lasted from 1962 to 1966. The number of batters was the sum of a square and a cube. What league did he pitch in? That might help with the third part of the question. Hint: He peaked at Triple-A, playing for Buffalo in 1965. He spent a good amount of time with the Auburn Mets. Hint: Former Mets minor leaguer Jerry Gehrke left this note on his UltimateMets.com page: "From Columbus, Ohio (I think) - "Zeke" was the all-time competitor. He would take anyone on at any time when he was pitching. He'd knock you down for almost anything. And at the end of the day, he would WIN. That was everything for Zeke. One of the more fierce competitors I have known." Hint: https://i.imgur.com/u8OkuOH.jpg> Hint: He shared a first name with a Beatle; he had an uncommon surname. Hint: He also shared a first name with the guy who sang that song, "Put Your Head on My Shoulder." The first syllable of his last name is the first name of a late 90s/early 2000s Mets ace. The second syllable of his last name sounds similar to a famous Star Trek character, but is spelled more German-ish. His surname has only two syllables. The number of strikeouts is the number of outs by one team after eight complete innings. The league in which he played in 1962 also featured teams in Olean, Erie, Geneva, Jamestown and Batavia.
