Those brilliant catches against the Mets notwithstanding , a case of making the spectacular catch because of bad positioning or instincts? A bit like the soccer coach who remarked about one of this players " he covers a lot of the field that fella......only because his first touch is so bad" actual quote He covers every blade of grass out there,But thats only because his first touch is so crap. Southampton manager Dave Jones on Carlton Palmer Well, I don't think he's bad, but a handful of brilliant looking catches don't mean you're a wizard. (Same goes for Francoeur actually) The only one I remember clearly is the Barajas one last year, He hit it hard but it was clearly going to be a case of whether or not he hit it at anyone or not. And it just so happens that he did. But I think it was fairly shallow and you don't usually play Rod shallow, so it was probably a good play. Ofcourse, it looks like LF may be his best position and thats where that one was hit.

  4. Regardless, I often get the feeling that Adam Rubin sleeps at Citi Field.
  5. metirish wrote: Willie Harris Could this have been any more under the radar? reports yesterday were he had offers from two teams, and.. the deal isn't done yet supposedly.
  6. Only really plays SS in an emergency. 3 games in 2008, 5 in 2005. Super utility type guy I guess. defensive Endy Chavez type. is batting 2.000 in the postseason.
  7. Benjamin Grimm wrote: I wonder if any other relocated teams have done anything like this? (Dodgers, Braves, Athletics...) My guess is they probably didn't. The Yankees never bring their trophies back to Baltimore..

Or less depending on how you feel about the Mets finances. You wonder if his price will go up with more demand? Also, depending on w hat Francis got, which i haven't seen anywhere yet.

  11. I expect him to have a pretty good year in Buffalo, possibly getting one short 15 game or so stint if someone goes on the DL/is beat up a bit. (Or, he's hitting so well that they DH Beltran for all 9 AL games and bring Duda up) He'll inevitably be a September callup with a chance to stick as #25 in the playoffs. I wouldn't rule out him being a key cog in a trade though. the Mets do seem to have a plethera of OF prospects pretty close.
  12. In a way, I wonder if the Yankees are worried about Rivera. But they paid a whole ton for someone who's gonna pitch 60 innings. Plus, coupled with CC, they're totally up in the air in terms of long term planning, with these guys being able to pretty much opt out at whim. And no matter how good your bullpen is, you gotta have a lead when you get there to save it. in other news, apparantly Jeff Francis to the Royals.
  13. After each appearance, Warthen says he receives an update on Perezs performance from bullpen catcher Rafael Arroyo, who accompanied Perez to be a guy that pushes him do his workouts each and every day. At times, Warthen said, he thinks that Ollie is up-and-down, and his heart isnt as in it as much as it should be at times. But he feels good, and hes getting in shape, and hes working hard, realizing that this is a big year. Glad they sent someone with him, because i still think not doing that for the WBC was a big mistake. Mildly disturbing though, about his heart and stuff. Pretty much confirms that he needs a lot more guidence and structure than an average pitcher, which isn't necessarily bad, but I don't trust Warthen to be that guy that goes out there and yells at him when he loses focus and walks a guy after he's 0-2 on him. Question is, were he to make the team, could David Wright be that guy?
  14. The former Baltimore Orioles (1901-1902) apparently signed Rafael Soriano 3 years 35 million. Nothing like getting desperate and over paying a middle reliever..unless they don't have real faith in Rivera holding up all season? Their pen, provided we didn't wear out Pedro and Rivera remains one of the few successful pitchers at that age, their pen looks pretty good, which might be a way of masking that their rotation is a head case, and Ace that had knee surgery, and Hughes with the possible addition of Brett Favre...err, Andy Pettitte..later on. cue the "Joba should be a starter" tirade on WFAN.
  15. bah, I misread Home Opener as opener. but same story, yeah. Nationals will likely be back. 4:10 does seem like a weird start though, although it does mean I can get aweay with just taking a half day at work.
  16. G-Fafif wrote: First time I can remember the Mets not "protecting" the Home Opener either with an off day. I assume that has something to do with it being a Friday, not that it can't rain on April 8. yeah, probably easier to schedule a double header on Saturday. or really, no one goes to the games down there so they could just give everyone tickets to Saturday.
  17. G-Fafif wrote: Opening Night in Miami has been penciled in for 7:10. Two previous openers the Mets played there were late-afternoon daytime affairs. I'm assuming the date (4/1) being a Friday has something to do with the scheduling...as might the host being the Marlins, who take the fun out of everything. Stupid fish. the season also ends on a weekday day game. I'm thrilled for the no day off after Opening Day though. that's always the worst day of the year. I might even ahve an Opening Day party.
  18. Imagine he actually _built_ on his success rather than regressed in some way? No, stop trying to tell me It's silly. IMAGINE. Imagine Ryan Howard flailing at the knuckleball for strike three on 9/25 to end the game, and the division race.
  19. LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr wrote: The service aspect is great and all, but this... He said his work for ESPN will mainly consume night and weekend hours, leaving the days free to oversee Stamford's health and safety departments. ... comes off as a little naive, and kind of trivializing toward those among us-- ahem-- who work in emergency-management-y fields. He fails to mention sleeping as well. But I imagine the job is more a political/desk job than anything else, not quite an emergency response sorta thing.
  20. It works out, the #2 starter probably gets the home opener. Unless they skip the 5th guy the first time through, which I'd consider for the right circumstances.

  22. Last Word: R.A. is to be honored by the BBWAA for the You Gotta Have Heart award, which is nice ... I suppose he's not eligible for the Ulnar Collateral Ligament Award. Why not? He has one in the other arm after all! I suspect good things from R.A. I was extremely skeptical through most of the season last year, thinking that the wheels would fall off and teams would figure it out and the Knuckler wouldn't always work, but it does really seem like he's figured out how to be a knuckleball pitcher and I don't think that goes away. I don't know that we can expect what we got last year (which was basically the best performance out of _any_ of the free agent pitchers Omar could've signed), but with his changing speeds and his not completely useless fastball, plus his obvious intelligence when it comes to pitching and understanding the game, I think his ERA will still be ar ound 3. so .. 16-6 3.14 ERA. Consistantly reliable all season, AND maybe even throws an inning or two in relief here or there. I think he tops the 235 innings from last year.
