  5. I put it at 11, which might be a bit high. I doubt he's getting traded much before 8/1 based on Alderson's comments. The Mets dropped the ball by playing wishy washy baseball since the break though, Braves were only 4-3. If the Braves continue to play around .500 or so in a slumpy week or so, and the Mets can somehow manage to go say 7-2 or something maybe he says. Not sure that's an 11% thing, but I suppose there's a small chance Alderson doesn't really like any of the packages offered and decides to keep him. or Tim Hudson's collides with Tommy Hanson and they're both out for the season.
  6. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: Really has. My earliest association of Beltran being a Met was when the Mets turned his stammering introductory presser into an advertising campaign. The New Mets! Really great player, definitely overshadowed by Pedro in 05, needlessly piled onto by haters, but also, a guy who was kinda hard to warm to. A lukewarm first season and frustrating injury issues will do that to a guy. He doesn't beat you over the head with his awesomeness (well, not often), but you look up and do a double take when you realize just how good he is.
  7. Talk is Johan Santana could be less than a month away. Talk about a rehab start for the Cyclones August 6th (which sucks! I'm gonna be at the August 5th game! )
  8. I don't think Parnell can throw harder than it is hot today.

Benjamin Grimm wrote: Ceetar wrote: If the first place team falters n this case, and the second place team jumps them, you were never really 5 games back to begin with. What??? Ultimately, you're chasing a number. You need to have more wins than everyone else at the end of the season. say it's Braves, Pirates, Mets separated by 3 games each. If the Pirates in two weeks jump ahead of the Braves and suddenly look like the 'favorites' then today you weren't really 6 back, because you only really needed to make up the 3 games. I just mean that you don't necessarily know how many games back you are when there are more teams in the race. Sure, it means there are other teams that could play better than you, but it also means the team in first might not be the ultimate target. And sure, they have to play each other so they both can't lose, but they also both can't win. This is less meaningful in a wild card race, but the third place team often has a chance to win against the teams in front of them, and if the two teams play each other it means one of them has to lose and can actually be beneficial.

My only job is to root for Real Mets like Carlos Beltran, and root for them not to be traded, and suffer agonies if they are. That's why I voted 10. As long as they are at least as close as 7 games back with 17 to play.

Benjamin Grimm wrote: I can't speak to the multiplier, but as for net games, I think that's something that Edgy came up with. Look at it this way, it's one thing to be 5 games behind and in second place, but it's another thing entirely to be 5 games behind and in fourth place; you have three teams to pass instead of one, and even if the first place team falters, there are two other teams better positioned to take advantage of that. The Net GB attempts to address that. Except all that matters is how many games back you are at the end. If the first place team falters n this case, and the second place team jumps them, you were never really 5 games back to begin with.

I think direction matters too. If you're gaining ground it feels different than if you're losing it.
  14. fun game. I was thinking about Beltran and Keith today. Many want 17 retired, but Beltran has had a better Mets career. If Beltran were to stay to the end of the season he'd actually pass Keith in games played. Difference of course is the ring, but that wasn't due to lack of talent on Beltran's part. Beltran also inched closer to the milestone he likely won't get as Met. 5 more home runs, 8 more SB.
  15. Edgy DC wrote: Keith is a little detached from the concerns of mortals. Meanwhile, Bay did wha? He figured Reyes is awesome, Reyes hurt his hamstring, so i'll hurt my hamstring. he doesn't understand cause and effect I don't think so.

They're gonna need more guys.")\ Dickey, meanwhile, proves far more in-control of onfield doings than CitiField security with a 1-2-3 6th. oh, if it was up to Keith you'd have the cameras on the guy all the way into the cell. He pretty much told Turner to deck the guy.
  17. Beltran tries to take out Keith with a bomb into the porch. tied at 4.
  18. What if Carlos Beltran is the difference between the Phillies making it out of the first round, and not? What if the financial benefits of the Phillies going to the WS again are what allows them the financial boon to next year acquire Beltran, or the righty-power bat they covet that makes the Mets 2012 that much more difficult? Is that worth trading him to the Phillies in exchange for a guy that so far looks like Lucas Duda in as many AB in the majors?

I don't think I'm "allowed" to Patch (despite my one comment on your first post). a friend of mine works for a local newspaper group and they're all mildly paranoid that Patch is going to put them out of business.

Chad Ochoseis wrote: There are a lot of other variables here - do I anticipate my team (or other teams) strengthening later in the year because of players coming back from injury? Do I anticipate my team weakening because some guys are playing over their heads? How much am I getting for my tradeable chips? Etc. Etc. Etc. Reyes is back, Wright's coming back. etc. I dunno. I never know how to answer this question. A lot depends on what you get back. The better the package, the closer you can be and still trade him. The Mets are probably farther back and will get a better prospect back, and yet, if we're only really chasing Atlanta (i.e. the Braves will win it if the Mets don't) then technically the Mets control their own destiny. (8 losses back, 9 to play against the Braves) I think if the Mets could get to 5 losses back, which might not happen even if the Mets go 12-0, you maybe consider not trading him if the package doesn't blow you away.
  21. TransMonk wrote: Pitching with a 2 run lead in the eighth vs. pitching with a 2 run lead in the ninth...what's the difference in terms of the "development of a closer"? well obviously since it was the 8th inning Parnell just couldn't get the adrenaline going, which is why he loaded the bases.
  22. Edgy DC wrote: Two on? Bases were totally jizzed, Cee. doh, how could I forget the awesome defensive play by The 7 to keep the ball in the infield?
  23. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: I was just remarking on the fact that he'd done good over these last few weeks; obviously he's a sub whose game has big flaws. well, those 'last few weeks' are actually months. I'm not sure it's so obvious what his role of the future is.
  24. yeah, 1 walk. 80 PA or so, not a tiny sample at least. his BABIP is the same via the splits and he's actually hitting more fly balls lefty. 1 walk is not good, but if he can maybe be a wee bit more patient maybe he can capitalize and yank some of them out of the park?
  25. Vic Sage wrote: TransMonk wrote: Maybe. I think he's the right choice anyhow given his experience. the "right choice" to do what, exactly? To help the Mets develop their next closer? No? Oh, you mean to win more games THIS year. Well, even that's a coin flip, given his peripherals (as compared to Parnell and Beato), but that can't be what Sandy has in mind for the balance of the 2011 season. He's rebuilding Izzie's value for a deadline deal. Otherwise, this is just a stupid waste of valuable time in the development of closers for this organization's future. Yes, Parnell having to face Pujols with two on in a 2-run game hurt his development because it was in the 8th inning.
