Getting into PGE Park means getting around MLS, and given the immense popularity of soccer in Portland, the odds of that are exceptionally long. yes. South American cities don't count. People have been talking big about soccer for as long as I can remember. A converted soccer-only stadium and one city supposedly big on it doesn't seem all that shocking. I suspect it's extremely exaggerated too. Not that I was looking for it, but I was there 3 years ago and can't remember anything about soccer being there. I didn't know soccer was there. Hell, you can find cities that are all up in arms about other second-tier sports like Nascar and high school football.

  5. Tracey lives in Queens and even a month before her wedding is helping out Sandy victims Today I was with another volunteer in the Far Rockaways. As we drove over sand dunes in the streets, it felt like an unplowed road in a Buffalo blizzard, with snow drifts up the sides of houses. But it's not snow. It's sand. And it's not going to melt away. And on every street there was the entire contents of peoples' homes in garbage piles on the sidewalk. Rubble everywhere. Shells of burned out bldgs, and people huddled over garbage can fires. People need help. There is no power, water, or food. They need diapers and water and blankets and food. ... and they were also incredibly thankful for a hug and a smile, and the knowledge that people cared. If you can help, there is a fabulous grass roots effort happening from local residents. I met these amazing people today. Help if you can. People are struggling. They need belief in the human spirit... https://www.facebook.com/RockawayRescueAlliance?fref=ts I can't listen to this at work, but here's her doing standup at Carolines. http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=55130716724&set=vb.649856724&type=3&theater Twitter So far the only thing Jim wants to register for is the Star Wars cookie cutters. #williamsonoma

  8. That's his girlfriend at the time, no idea about anything since. Presumably this is the shot they take before you get on the boat. AFTER he got on the boat..well... http://voices.washingtonpost.com/early-lead/2010/11/padres_coach_jim_malone_says_b.html it probably shouldn't be a surprise that Jim Malone, the San Diego Padres' strength and conditioning coach, found that being stranded on a cruise ship wasn't that bad an experience. Malone, 42, and his girlfriend were among the passengers on the Carnival Splendor. They arrived back in San Diego on Thursday after being adrift for three days at sea because of a fire in an engine room. "I grew up in the Northeast, and it was like being stuck in the dorm after a snowstorm. As long as you had some beverages and something to snack on, you're good to go for a few days (Buffalo Native, I can relate) But it also could have been much, much worse. ... We got home, safe and sound, in a few days. We didn't sink."

  10. In San Diego, The Nuge has nailed down the job for San Diego Padres closer Huston Street. Street told Don Norcross of UT-San Diego that he was rushed as a rookie, picking a Nas instrumental because he had five minutes to decide on game day. This time around, with the pressure of being in the same city where Trevor Hoffman famously entered to AC/DC's "Hell's Bells," Street took his time. Street decided on Ted Nugent's "Stranglehold" at the urging of Padres strength and conditioning coach Jim Malone, who told Norcross: Ted Nugent, hes out of his mind. Thats the kind of controlled craziness, if I were a closer, Id want to come out to. With that, Jim Malone leads the league in understatements this season.

Probably not. but I suspect he'll want a multi-year deal too. but hey, Mets have done pretty well with catcher's named Mike.

He can still re-sign with them (as can any of the other eight) but if he does sign elsewhere they took the steps to get compensation for him. The Yanx could conceivably get 4 of the first 30 picks out of this whole thing. Of course, in the short term, those future maybes will come at the expense of three regular players off their current roster. oh, my mistake. I saw that he hadn't rejected yet thought the deadline was Monday. The Yankees seem to make out yeah, but you're right, they're losing a lot of regulars and would've gotten more picks out of it last year.
  17. Kuroda hasn't rejected yet, but the Yankees are getting the other two picks (unless they re-sign them) budget or not, I'm not sure I want the Mets to sign any of those guys. I'm not that enamored with Upton.
  18. Edgy DC wrote: The important thing to me is that Rosenthal is playing both sides of the question. The Mets, he seems to be suggesting, (a) would be wise to deal Dickey, ( would totally be douchebags anyway if they do. He gets to rip them after the fact either way. he's probably already written both columns too.
  19. has a reporter ever sited a 'leak' as being leaked solely for negotiating tactic it usually is? i.e. The Mets are mentioning Dickey in trades because A. it helps establish what his value is to other teams, and B. it's a bluff suggesting that the Mets are willing to move on and aren't desperate to keep him at any cost?
  20. Vic Sage wrote: And not all LHs are eaten up by lefty pitchers, and not all RHs are great at hitting lefties either. And beggars can't be choosers. we're going to have flaws somewhere. I'd just as soon they find the best available OFers and not be concerned overmuch by what side of the plate they stand on. Right, but you get more value by hitting the bigger weaknesses. An outfielder that hits lefties is going to provide more value to the Mets than the other (particularly if there are limited funds) And, generally speaking, there are more right-handed hitting players than left-handed ones, so the cost might actually be cheaper there. Obviously the best options are guys that are simply good baseball players and don't get eaten up by lefties or righties, but if the Mets are strapped for options and need to sign flawed players, it benefits them much more to have that flaw not be "can't hit lefties". Especially if Duda, Davis and Nieuwenhuis are going to struggle with that one and could use someone to take some of those innings. Ibanez hit 20 home runs in 400 PA in a tiny ballpark after hitting for power in a tiny ballpark in the previous years. Yes, he ran into some against the Orioles. But that's an extremely small sample size. I don't want Mark Reynolds either, even though he hit a whole bunch against the Yankees. Raul's platoon splits the last couple of years are laughable. Mike Baxter is better. the Met would be better with Mike Baxter playing than Raul Ibanez. and they have Baxter already.
  21. Vic Sage wrote: I agree with Sherman's premise; Pitching + Power = winning team. So i don't think the Mets can be too choosy about populating their OF, vis-a-vis the L/R issue. They need players, regardless of what side they hit from. Sure, ideally you want some balance in the lineup, but the budget being what it is, Sandy's not in an "ideal" situation. I don't think he should pass on Garrett Jones, or even Ibanez, solely based on handedness. The Giants would disagree. and Ibanez really sucks. It's possibly to overcompensate for sure, but with Murphy, Davis, and probably at least most of Duda, Nieuwenhuis, Thole (And throw in Baxter and Turner as well) you need some right-balanced desperately or you're gonna get chewed up by lefty pitchers.
  22. Raul Ibanez, Russell Martin, Kelly Johnson, Miguel Olivo and Alex Gonzalez or trade candidates such as Baltimores Nolan Reimold, Bostons Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Pittsburghs Garrett Jones, the White Soxs Tyler Flowers and the Cubs Bryan LaHair. Let's see, Ibanez a really bad outfielder, lefty which the Mets don't need. LaHair is even worse. Russell Martin is probably just an older Josh Thole. Salty might be a good backup/platoon guy since he's basically a low-OBP slugger. Flowers has been floated, he might be a nice pickup but he hasn't done anything in the majors. Olivo sucks. Kelly Johnson is not a bad player, but he's a second baseman. I'm not sure why the Mets would be targeting that except as a shuffle moving Murphy out but that's mostly going to be a lateral move. Alex Gonzelez is a backup MI..probably a good one, but he's a bench player. I'd gladly take Reimold if the Orioles are out to trade him in his first arb year. The same with Garrett Jones, except he's a lefty so low priority there.
  23. Benjamin Grimm wrote: I think Dillon Gee, if not for that demoralizing injury, would have been very tradeable. He still may be, except that it probably won't be until after he proves he's healthy, which he won't have a chance to do until next spring. maybe, maybe not. It was a medical thing after all, not a physical thing. I think that plays differently. Still, the return you get for Dillon Gee types is probably not worth it.
  24. Edgy DC wrote: No, it actually holds together. Just took a while is all. I get paid by the word. Attempting to parse that Hairston comment, to me, sounds like they'd like Hairston back but expect him to get offers beyond what he's worth to the Mets.
