  4. #Mets agree to terms with LHP Scott Rice and RHP Carlos Torres on minor league deals and invite both to major league Spring Training.

I recall putting the DVD in to watch in my room when I was still living with my parents after college (13in'er at the foot of the bed). I must've already been exhausted. I'm pretty sure the same thing happened with Pulp Fiction. Also Lock Stock and 2 Smoking Barrels, although that one was while in a Cornell dorm.

  7. Avatar: - $77 million opening weekend and $2.8 billion gross - 3 Oscars plus 6 other nominations including Best Picture and Titanic: - $29 million opening weekend (15 years ago) and a $2.2 billion gross - 11 Oscars including Best Picture and 14 overall nominations are pretty much the definition of "Mega-Hits" oh, indeed. I guess I was sliding towards more the cultural hit bit. I feel like you hear people talking about, quoting, and referencing movies like The Big Lebowski and what not and rarely Titanic or Avatar. But yeah,
  8. metsmarathon wrote: titanic, bladerunner, and the big lebowski come to mind. also, nearly anything in hte past three years. i hear there was this movie with blue aliens, but everybody who watched it had to wear funny glasses. wtf is that all about? Avatar. Wasn't quite a Mega-Hit. Had more to do with special effects and all that. The story line was really basic, not bad, just nothing special. the funny glasses were only if you saw it in 3D. nothing different. Does Titanic count as a mega-hit? screw Titanic. You really have to see the Big Lebowski just for the Lucas Duda jokes.

Pleasant, well-crafted... but, like, a LOT of jokes hinge on the fact that Joe Pesci's Brooklyn accent sounds funny. But you REALLY should see Pulp Fiction. Have you seen and enjoyed other Tarantino? Pursuing other Tarantino stuff without having seen this is like being a Woody Allen fan but never seeing Annie Hall. never seen Annie Hall or much Woody Allen, but anyway. I've seen Kill Bill and 2001 and Clockwork Orange. wait, those last two are Kubrick. oops. I fell asleep on the first 5 minutes of Reservoir dogs and haven't gotten back to it. I'm pretty much expecting to like Fiction, I Just haven't..done it yet. I know my wife probably WON'T like it, so that's a block. I probably should just download it now so I have it.

They get wed. I may have solicited the help of a lawyer who has a subscription to one of those background check sites.
  11. I've got a list a mile long. I was more a gamer than a tv and movie kid and didn't do much of either until I started dating my wife. Pulp Fiction. I want to see this one..I just..haven't. My Cousin Vinny. I'm worried this is going to be the crude/slapstick style humor along the lines of Wayne's World that I just don't really care for. (and I've never watched Wayne's World all the way through either, if that counts.)
  12. rumors about the possibility of playing the farm club in Vegas just before the season starts.
  13. so, Bixler. His girlfriend is Jennifer R. Lawrence (not the actress). Lives in Sandusky, OH which is where his parents live as well. Still not finding much more though. Jennifer seems to be from Texas, most recently Houston (2007). Also mixed in is a Jessica Bixler who I can't figure out if it's a sister or what not, or maybe that's the wife and Jen is her sister. The research suggests it's Jennifer that lives at the same address as Brian though. Confusing. Googling, I found Jennifer's pinterest page. well, a pinterest page. it's a common name. This one's friends with a Jessica Bixler though. This doesn't particularly look like Brian though. it's not horribly off, but mostly the eyebrows. Jessica Bixler though.. That kinda looks like Brian. Unless that's his brother Michael, who just got married. Or one of them is.
  14. went searching for Bixler. not finding much.. guesses are that his brother just got married and/or his brother or father might be a county administrator. I dunno, someone call that number and ask for Brian. COUNTY ADMINISTRATOR (appointed) MICHAEL J. BIXLER 2705 Sweetbriar Drive Sandusky, OH 44870 419-627-0006 (res.) 419- 627-7672 (office)

  16. Some limited tickets and packs went on sale just now at Mets.com. It's Opening Day, not like I can say no after all. Between taxes and fees and delivery and platinum pricing..came out to $72/per Promenade Reserved. That's lovely.

(Angel Pagan?) Especially if you're only buying two years of Cabrera's prime, versus probably haven't to buy more of someone you think will be better. Even if they swing a trade for Justin Upton, that's 3/40. After the PED's do we know what Melky's ceiling is? we don't even know if the PEDs had any effect.

In other news, the Marlins signed Juan Pierre for a year and $1.6M. I've never been huge on the guy, and the Mets are saturated with left-handed hitters, but for that price I'd have given him a look. no interest in Juan Pierre whatsoever. Rather keep Torres. did Napoli get an offer/sign somewhere? I wouldn't overpay for him, but Napoli would be a nice addition.

So, so much "winning matters" stuff, especially from ex-jocks (Harold Reynolds and Sean Casey chief among them). It's enough to make you think that ex-jocks should be eliminated in toto from any EVALUATIVE discussion, and stick only to the how-you-play analysis. Honestly, I'd much rather hear from ex-GMs like John Hart-- or even a Jim Bowden-- when you're talking about player-evaluation. Hell, just ONCE I'd like to hear someone rebut a "you never played the game/you don't know what it's like" argument with a "you never put together a player-eval/three-team trade." An integral part of Moneyball imo.

I think you would have a better chance of affording that pricetag than the Wilpons do. The Jays have some winning to do. Do they have a manager yet? that fits the Mets budget pretty easily, depending what they plan to do about the other outfield spots and a RH catcher and some bullpen. nope, no manager yet.
  22. the FJM guys went on to other things right? I'm sorta surprised no one's picked up the mantle more than occasionally.
  23. Melky Cabrera to the Blue Jays, 2 years, $16. seems like a good deal to me. I'd have taken him for that.
  24. I believe the next step is what we call the Jason Bay step. you have until 1/31 to cut the fat from the roster. drop anyone you want with no penalty.
  25. Edgy DC wrote: What a holy stink on that Cabrera/Trout thingie. The Times, interestingly, aggregates the story, rather than covering it. Which of course is part of the problem. The more that credible sources become aggregators of information, the fewer credible sources there are providing it. Murray Chass, of course, shits a watermelon. Mitch Albom weighs in too apparently. I'm amused by it all.
