I like that Mets management has been conservative in retiring numbers. It's tough to make a case for retiring 31 but not (ultimately) 15. Both were established stars who came to the Mets mid-career. Both had great careers as Mets, and both spent about the same amount of time as Mets. Both have a good chance of getting into the HOF, and both have a good chance of going in with Mets caps. Both were amazing in the postseason but didn't win rings. Both made the final outs. I remember, i think anyway, when Derek Bell came to the Mets and specifically asked Gooden about wearing 16. That might be the route to go with 24 and 8. (hint, d'Arnaud, hint..) Have them ask permission, feed them a line about idolizing them or something. Give it to a top ranked guy like that and I think it'd be hard to say no, and you break the ice. then even if they suck you've broken the seal and can give it to the next schlub you call up.

IGT - Phils at Mets -- Friday July 19

31 is a given imo. I think a second survey should be conducted as to 14 31 37 41 42 or 14 37 41 31 42 or 14 37 41 42 31 or 14 37 31 41 42 ...

1) 31 2) 15 3) 17 Release all other back into circulation. (the 8, 24, etc)

Really thinking about Beltran, his HOF cap logo should be this: Seriously, his career isn't defined so much by his employers, but by who he chose to employ him. who he formally chose to employ him anyway. -

Centerfield wrote: Jeter is a first-ballot Hall of Famer with a handful of rings, played his whole career for one team, and has managed to avoid controversy his entire career despite living in NY. Let's face it, young players should be modeling themselves after him. Well, media perception shapes things, and being swept up in a winner helps. Even the first-ballot thing is subjective and media/writer driven. Piazza's a first-ballot HOFer but played in the steroid era. Why should it be different for Jeter or Rivera? But there are plenty of things to make controversy on if they felt like it. Whether it's gift baskets or tax evasion or how he's shirks the media when he can get away with it, stubbornly insists on where he hits in the lineup and that he can still play SS (contrast with a guy like Beltran who not only offers to move, helps his replacement in the process) and didn't come across as rosy in contract negotiations and is at least partially responsible for the treatment A-Rod gets. The best thing an athlete can do is not be ashamed to be himself, whoever that is. The media will do what they want, but be honest with yourself and your team and it won't manifest into trouble. *shrug* guess that's good advice overall though. -

Just remember - those who turned up to honor Beltran upon his return to New York got a no-hitter as a bonus. good point. -

Why don't we retire Andy Pettitte's number while we're at it? He was good and played baseball. Not a Mets legend. There aren't a lot of them, but when you get all-time greats that play their best years and the most years for your club? Or what? It's all about championships? That's awfully shallow no? It certainly wasn't his fault they didn't win one. -

Carlos Beltran is 3rd in (batting) WAR by Baseball-Reference. 4th in Fangraphs (Jose jumps him) Sure, you could make the case that he wasn't a much more successful Met than Jose or Fonzie, but the Hall of Fame thing takes that to another level imo. You're not retiring his number just because he's a Mets legend, but because he's a baseball legend. Alfonzo is not. Reyes, well, is active. so is Wright. Strawberry (and Gooden) are always straddling that line it seems. You could certainly retire those, but those are mostly past decisions. I think eventually 17 will get retired bolstered by the added value on the broadcast team. But it's not just that Beltran was the Mets best center fielder, he was probably the best in the game during the last decade. He's 8th in WAR among center fielders...that's All-Time. (at least half the games there) Mays, Cobb, Speaker, Mantle, Griffey, DiMaggio, Lofton, Beltran, Snider, Ashburn Oh, and btw, he's not done yet. He'll probably pass Lofton by the time this season is over. WAR tries to take into account defense and speed, but he's 29 all-time by OPS+ which ain't bad certainly. Oh, and he's one of the best base stealers ever. He's one of only 8 guys to hit 300 HR and steal 300 bases. He's the greatest postseason hitter ever. I mean, the guy's a legend that played more time with the Mets than any other team and gave them his best years. What exactly does a guy need to do to get his number retired around here? -

wait what, where'd this come from? Uncalled for! Still on a rookie contract, he knows he may soon have to renegotiate with the team for a long-term deal (online sportswriters speculate he could get a seven-year, $70 million deal). The Mets, of course, would be insane to let him go but the Mets are the Mets, so anything can happen Read more: http://www.mensjournal.com/magazine/matt-harvey-young-gun-in-the-big-city-20130715?page=2#ixzz2ZLFrL5wW Follow us: @mensjournal on Twitter | MensJournal on Facebook -

He's a douche, but hey, he's our douche. It seems like you say the same about Seaver in some respects no? I mean, Jeter's a douche too, and that's fine, I suspect Harvey will be a little classier than having his friends sneak him girls up to his place and then give them gift baskets for their trouble. -

Of course, isn't booing Wainwright and Molina about the greatest respect you can give them? It's a "You faced us and won, and we hate you for it." Booing them is a nod of respect for their part in it. I'm glad they get it, since not everyone does. It's where the grudging respect for Chipper Jones I have comes from, he got into the rivalry and that's what makes the rivalries fun. Some pictures? It's a just a bronze snapshot, imperfectly representative of his career. It doesn't mean his name is forever linked in Heaven exclusively to that employer alone. sure, but I think the Mets might see it that way. Alex Anthony gave the nice pause for emphasis before announcing Beltran but no one really took the hint. They obviously didn't re-issue 31 and you think someone, somewhere, would have the thought "Hey, we've got plenty of numbers and Carlos Beltran is one of the best Mets ever..maybe hold it a bit while we mull it over." This is premature, but when Beltran does retire which is probably a couple of years away, if d'Arnaud is awesome are you going to take it away from him? Will he give it up ala John Franco? -

If the hat on the plaque (and really that's all this is about) shows a KC logo as opposed to a NYM one it doesn't mean he was any less a Met or that he'd be any more of one if we reverse the case. I'm just concerned, hell they've already re-issued it, that the Mets themselves won't honor him properly if/when he does get in. They should retire 15 and given history it seems the only real shot of that is if he goes in as a Met. So much of it's perception though. And it's one of the few things that anger me about how other people are fans. We gave Mike Piazza a curtain call for his SECOND home run of the day against us with the Padres in his return. It's almost like people/writers don't understand that part of the reason I, and others, hate Mariano (Besides the no way MY guy did steroids during the steroid era stuff) is the overly flowery worship crap and the telling me I MUST worship him or I'm an idiot and stupid fan stuff. Nope, not true. And that's sports, and part of what makes competition fun. He's not royalty, he's just another player. The Emperor, may he life for ever, honorifics get tiresome. Honor him if you want, that's fine. I personally think it was overdone. If we're actually playing a game here you don't need to take the 3 minutes to worship him before he starts warming up. That's what announcements and warmup pitches are for. I continued to boo him. That's what you do to the enemy.
