  1. paywall'd? wtf.
  2. random selection of cards from a $1 clear pack of cards in a bowling alley vending machine in Hackensack, NJ. 6 "mets" wait. 8.
  3. batmagadanleadoff wrote: I'm not even arriving at that point of deciding whether the thing is worth doing because I think that the Mets can't do it even if they wanted to. To me, it's pointless. It's like the homeless guy shopping for mansions if I may talk in circles against my best wishes. If, for example, the Mets were asked about Moncada, do you think their spokesperson would admit that they would've loved to sign Moncada if only they had the funds in their budget? You always base your opinions on the team's politically correct comments. When they finally get a prospect or two for Gee, do you think they'll admit that they dumped salary? No. They'll say that they made the best deal possible, even if they were constrained from trading Gee for someone with a comparable or, shudder, even higher salary. Gee is NOT a salary dump, it's a value dump. They don't have room for him and if he only pitches as mostly a reliever his value drops. But it's not really a dump at all or they would've done it already. They know he's probably more valuable to another team than to the Mets, therefore they want to leverage that difference into something that helps the Mets more. That's just smart baseball. I base none of my opinions on what the Mets say, because nothing the Mets say publicly, or 'privately but really publicly because I know you're going to publish this quote' really means much of anything. I'm just looking at the hard facts around Moncada and certainly see ways that any team could feel like he wasn't worth it.

They're gonna have to change all the furniture because they don't like the style and taste of what's in there. It's too far away from everything. A better deal may come along if they wait a little longer. Blah blah blah. But what does all of that matter when they're penniless? What if they're not penniless? And what's the point in commenting on every single thing every other team does as "The Mets could've done that if they weren't broke"? I'm more interested in if these moves make sense or not. They're not exactly slam dunks, everyone has a different opinion on how the team should be run, clearly. So if you're going to say "This is undoubtedly a thing the Mets should've done" I'm simply pointing out that that is not true. It doesn't matter if the ultimate reason they didn't do it was money, it's still true that it's not a 100% slam dunk decision or that Sandy might have felt this particular move's risks outweighted the rewards. If you simply want to say "The Mets are broke" to everything, keep posting the Megdal post-generator stuff to the finance thread.
  5. it is in fact a hard cap on international signings for the next two periods. So strictly from that sense, you're already gambling on there being no 'big time' prospects in the next two periods. So, everything else aside it's already a calculated risk. Do you want this guy, or do you have info or hope that they'll be something else you'd rather take your shot on? All the evaluation stuff plays in to that, in particular the idea that this guy isn't ready now. Everything is a risk/reward balance and that ratio is not the same for every team. chalking up every decision as "oh, they're broke" is a knee-jerk reaction, especially when the other ones are "oh, that's just to pretend they're not broke". But again, money or not it's not hard to see how throwing a lot of money to add a single minor leaguer is not a good way towards building the sustained revenue>expenditures balance that Sandy's working towards.
  6. batmagadanleadoff wrote: This is just more delusional rationalization speak as far as I'm concerned. It's like telling me that the homeless person didn't buy the mansion because he didn't like the quality of the kitchen cabinets. But what you're saying is because the guy didn't buy the mansion, he must be homeless.
  7. Why does it have to be the Mets are broke or the Mets can spend like money doesn't matter? It's always going to be somewhere inbetween, and yes it's probably closer to the broke (of course, it's hard to call 100 million broke) side of things. So whether or not they can/could have/should have splurged to add a prospect to their system, even a highly touted one, there WERE a lot of ancillary considerations like potential prospects they already have to play positions, plus the hard cap on international signings the next two signing periods. And then, you know, the actual evaluation of the guy. Just because some/many/most see him as likely impact major leaguer doesn't mean the Mets feel he is, or that he fits into their team philosophy and approach.
  8. and all of them will tell us to "Let's Go Mets" for the second half of the season.
  9. .265/.305/.400 Which is certainly acceptable for a SS, even the bad one he'll be. Plays 121 games but only 90 9th innings. Will be the guy that gets the go-ahead HR in the division clinching game.
  10. 209.2 IP, 215Ks, 2.68 ERA, 2.65 BB/9. Due to a late clinch, starts game 1 of the NLDS.
  11. Not really sure. I like Gee actually, I think he's one of those guys that gets better with more reps, hits his spots better and what not. If he does in fact start in the bullpen and Collins gets him enough reps I think he can do very good things. Let's call him 1999 Pat Mahomes or something. 85 IP, 62Ks, 3.2 ERA, 3 spot starts. Of course, he could be traded before I finish this sentence, or not at all.
  12. Should be noted how excellent he is at pitch framing. It seems he's a great catcher for a pitching staff. So if he augments our already excellent pitching staff? nifty.
  13. 9 starts before traded. 34 Ks. 3.8 ERA. 19 BB, 15 comments from me about how he's campaigning for the DH in the National League. (not counting this one)
  14. I think he'll split the difference between 2013 and 2014 which were both good years. .255/.355/.455 130 wRC+ 26 HR. 2 SB. 155 games. (yes he'll sit against some lefties but he's too good not to at least PH) But that's still very good. He was the third best NL First baseman by wRC+ last year behind Rizzo and Freeman. With some early Mets success keeping the casual fan in NY more focused, he'll garner more All-Star votes and be a legitimate first time All-Star.
  15. I'm looking forward to a lot of awkwardly milling around as players instinctively start running off the field for the typical inning ending 6-3 groundout and then the manager comes out to challenge something and the player are all halfway to the dugout and unsure if they should retreat or hang out and wait..

Probably ends up in a different department, but the response (or maybe this was the response and he ignored it) should've been "Hey, sign up for the Mets Kids Club! Blue level is FREE and contains 4 FREE ticket vouchers. Membership card. Lanyard. Get some more stuff if you actually come to Sunday games."
  17. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: I think it would be great if Muffy, Wright, Flores, Cuddy, Grandyman, dArnaud, Laggy and Duda all hit exactly 18 home runs this year I think it'd be funnier if Colon did.
  18. 142 G, 25 HR, .255/.315/.465, wRC+ 115
  19. I'd like to get a fresh start this year. Let's put all transgressions behind us like they never happened and focus on 2015. To this end, Joe Girardi will switch back to uniform number #27, if it hasn't yet been retired for Graeme Lloyd. Your New DH, Alex
  20. by 9pm all green-induced hangovers should be over too!
  21. Edgy MD wrote: Yeah, I guess it's the runner coming straight that had me thinking steal-of-home. It could also be the runner scoring a grounder to deep short or something. That would explain the pitcher not backing up. Or maybe the pitcher just stinks. Watching old OC episodes is like an orgy of incidental art. I want to start a blog where I try to identify all Oscar's b/w photos the prizefighter, the racehorse, the (apparent) Mets team photo. Which year is that from? Which year are his banners from? Did you see where I posted a screenshot of a magnetic Mets schedule from a Seinfeld episode on Twitter?
  22. Frayed Knot wrote: Definitely not a steal of home, Jackie's or anyone else's. Ceetar wrote: why are there two on deck circles. are those on deck circles? They're awfully close and only on the first base side. Neither one of those are on-deck circles. They were, in effect, on-deck mounds. They're not raised obviously, but hurlers would use those back in the day to throw to a plate that was near the backstop as a pre-game warmup. I guess they were considered preferable to the bullpen for whatever reason. There's one on the 3rd base side also. Not quite sure why there are two on the 1st base side (in addition to the batter's circles). yeah, some pictures I found (but all of YSI) had two on the third base side. my guess is that this clip is from after they stopped using them, so one got covered with grass at one point.
  23. I dunno, does it feel like the Catcher has the ball there? That violates the new rule. Look at the third base coach. he appears to be waving him around in the first shot. This isn't a steal, it's a straight run scored. The pitcher was initially off the mound to back up third perhaps but he's backup quickly so that he won't block the throw, presumably from LF. The Catcher is all ready to receive a throw. The umpire too, isn't behind the plate for ball/strikes, he's in position to see a tag play. why are there two on deck circles. are those on deck circles? They're awfully close and only on the first base side. It seems like the crowd is up but not necessarily cheering, so away team scoring? away team dugout standing and watching there behind third? "- New York "OLD" Yankee Stadium Yankees 1923-1973"
  24. .285/.350/.460 19 HR. 122 wRC+ 140 games. Passably bad outfield defense
  25. metsmarathon wrote: so, what are we thinking of for a draft date? We did Wednesday 3/19 last year. So let's throw out 3/18 as a starting point this year? How's March 18th at 9pm work for you?
