it bored the crap out of me.

Shama lama dingdong makes a comeback of sorts, with this solid horror film with an ending that is, while not exactly a twist, puts the film in context, both as a narrative and as a film in his canon.

happy to see the love for ARRIVAL and HELL OR HIGH WATER. But Amy Adams got hosed (Meryl? AGAIN?), and they went out of their way to ignore DEADPOOL.

yeah, that.

Vic Sage is high on (well we won't know for sure until the lab comes back with the results) but also Lagares, Salas, Henderson, Kelly; low on Loney, Wright, Conforto, Flores, Reyes how can i be high on my rankings for Salas and Kelly when i didn't even include them? This makes me question your record-keeping. I DEMAND A RECOUNT!

i loved it, mostly, and I think the complaints i've heard about the lack of singing and dancing ability of Gosling and Stone are both overstated and miss the point. I do think its somewhat overlong and rambling, and a lot of it is lifted without acknowledgment form UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG, but its still a terrific piece of filmmaking, and the music is really good.

Oy... I'd say something about "wild horses" now, if i had the energy on a Monday morning.

LONEY I considered Kelly, Nimmo, Ruggiano, Reynolds, Cecchini, Smoker and Salas, but didn't feel they had enough ABs/IPs to warrant listing ahead of guys who played substantially more (though not as well). I left off Plawecki and Bastardo despite having enough ABs/IPs, due to poor performance, and i considered doing the same to D'Aza, d'Arnaud, Verrett and Loney, but ultimately they played too much to ignore. Goeddel pitched enough to consider, but Henderson just edged him out.

thumbs up. unlike last SW movie, this one has a halfway original story that adds something to the canon, and it evoked the earlier films rather than regurgitating their past story elements. It actually fixes some story problems from the earlier films (like why the deathstar had a weakness in the first place) and reintroduces the religious aspects of the Force (fie on midochlorians!). Could it have used some more character development and a few less laser blasts? Yeah, probably. And the CGI portrayals of two characters from the original trilogy were both creepy and distracting. But the introduction of Vader was awesome, in the actual definition of that word. And the cast was pretty good overall. The battles had the feeling of actual warfare rather than the clean, CGI robot slaughters of the prequel trilogy. on the whole, worth the wait.

Has anyone been following the recent news about Last Tango in Paris ? I haven't seen the movie, so I'm not familiar with the scene in question, but from my understanding Marlon Brando raped (or otherwise sexually assaulted) an actress on camera. They didn't tell her what was going to be done to her because they wanted her reaction to be genuine. according to the actress: "that scene wasn’t in the original script. The truth is it was Marlon who came up with the idea. … They only told me about it before we had to film the scene and I was so angry. I should have called my agent or had my lawyer come to the set because you can’t force someone to do something that isn't in the script, but at the time, I didn’t know that. Marlon said to me, “Maria, don't worry, it’s just a movie,” but during the scene, even though what Marlon was doing wasn't real, I was crying real tears. I felt humiliated and to be honest, I felt a little raped, both by Marlon and by Bertolucci. After the scene, Marlon didn't console me or apologize. Thankfully, there was just one take." But that quote is over 5 years old. There is no new story here. But Bertolucci has been asked about it recently and he explained: "Several years ago at the Cinemathèque Francaise someone asked me for details on the famous butter scene. I specified, but perhaps I was not clear, that I decided with Marlon Brando not to inform Maria that we would have used butter. We wanted her spontaneous reaction to that improper use [of the butter]. That is where the misunderstanding lies. Somebody thought, and thinks, that Maria had not been informed about the violence on her. That is false!" the statement continued. "Maria knew everything because she had read the script, where it was all described. The only novelty was the idea of the butter. And that, as I learned many years later, offended Maria. Not the violence that she is subjected to in the scene, which was written in the screenplay."

Superman is coming back _ this time with Batman

i just rewatched this last night on cable. i still like it, despite its obvious (and significant) problems, which i noted above. And i once again have to do a mea culpa in my premature criticism of Affleck's Batman. It's the best version of Batman after Bales (and Kevin Conroy). He offers an older Bruce Wayne, but with a prep school obnoxiousness that is spot on, and his Batman is truly a deadly monster. They've gone back to both the roots of the character, where he carried a pistol and had no problems killing bad guys, while updating it with Frank Miller's version of an older Wayne. But that "Martha" twist... it's just awful, practically destroying the movie (along with Eisenberg and Doomsday). -
has anybody else seen it?

send me a photo.

i mostly enjoyed this one. Cumberbatch was perfect, and they nailed all the elements of the Dr. Strange universe, from the cape, to the eye of agamatto, to the Ditko-esque universe of Dormammu. I didn't love the INCEPTION-like visual effects, but other than that, it was spot on.

Canadian director Denis Villeneuve (Sicario, Prisoners) has adapted a great SF short story (“Story of Your Life†by Ted Chiang) into a great film. A dozen alien ships land in random places around the world, but the aliens remain unseen, within their stone-like monoliths. Countries bring teams of linguists and scientists in to try and communicate with them, as people start to panic. In the US, the military (Forrest Whitaker) bring in a team (Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner) and they may yet uncover a truth that will change humanity forever. It’s a thoughtful, dreamlike film about causality and free will, and, despite its intellectual conceits, it is deeply moving. It is a contemplative film, not an action movie, and its deliberate pacing can put some people off. But i found it emotionally satisfying and I recommend it. I also recommend Ted Chiang's short story collection where i originally found the story, called "Stories of Your Life and others" https://www.amazon.com/Stories-Your-Life-Others-Chiang/dp/B00BQ1TZDA/ref=asap_bc?ie=UTF8

i'm a big fan of the show, but i heard this was dreadful, so i passed on it. The last Broadway revival was about 10 years ago, with Raul Esparza as Riff Raff and Dick Cavett as the narrator. It was really good.

My ranking of GENERATIONS was, as i said, my understanding of the critical consensus about the film, but my personal ranking would put it ahead of ST III and INSURRECTION. Still, I'd keep it in the 3rd tier. It has some great nerdgastic moments, but some awful ones too. It's a very inconsistent movie.

just saw LEGEND. It's not a great movie (sort of rambling), but Hardy gives not one, but two great performances in it. I haven't seen LOCKE yet, but i'm planning to.

In honor of the 50th anniversary, here's a consensus ranking of the 13 Star Trek feature films (based on Metacritic, Rotten Tomatoes, and IMDB), plus the various TV series: [u:3grop4ca]Best of the lot:[/u:3grop4ca] STAR TREK (09) - JJ Abrams hugely successful reboot is best reviewed film in the series (by both critics and fans); rescued the franchise ST: FIRST CONTACT [VIII] (96) - The best (and only good) one of the NEXT GEN movies ST II: WRATH OF KHAN (82) - Best of The Original Series movies; Nick Meyers brought the franchise back after the disaster that was the first movie -[TV] TOS - sure, it looks cheesy and overacted now, but it clearly resonated in the culture at the time and, without it, none of the rest happens -[TV] TNG - a sequel that took the series forward, with better FX, acting and writing [u:3grop4ca]Good, too:[/u:3grop4ca] ST INTO DARKNESS (13) - Cumberbatch is great as Khan in the reboot's 1st sequel ST IV: VOYAGE HOME (86) - Comedy, time travel and environmentalism in fan fave from TOS cast ST BEYOND (16) - Most recent sequel; another solid chapter ST VI: UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY (91) - Last of TOS movies, with Christopher Plummer terrific as Klingon big baddie -[TV] DS9 - a different direction; the most philosophically interesting of all the series [u:3grop4ca]Marginal, but watchable:[/u:3grop4ca] ST III: RETURN OF SPOCK (84) - was there ever any doubt? ST: INSURRECTION [iX] (98) - Would have been a decent TNG TV episode ST: GENERATIONS [VII] (94) - uneven passing of the torch from the TOS cast to TNG cast; broke the odd/even pattern of bad/good movies -[TV] VOYAGER - Ok, but uneven [u:3grop4ca]A pox on all their houses:[/u:3grop4ca] ST, The MOTION PICTURE (79) - After all the years of waiting, the first one was an epic disappointment ST: NEMESIS [X] (02) - antithesis of ST; the last TNG movie that (along with dreadful ENTERPRISE tv series) sank franchise until JJ rebooted it ST V: FINAL FRONTIER (89) - Shatner's infamous turkey, he recently apologized for it -[TV] ANIMATED SERIES - good writing ruined by awful animation -[TV] ENTERPRISE - there was absolutely nothing worth watching here

As for Gig Young, it was reported that he collapsed on the set of BLAZING SADDLES on their first day of shooting, due to alcohol withdrawal, and was fired. Funny that it was Pryor that the studio was concerned about, but they were fine with hiring a notorious, raging alcoholic.
-
never mind, i looked it up. Here's what Brooks said: The studio didn’t want him because they said he was unreliable due to his personal problems. I fought hard for Richard and was going to quit the film but he told me not to because he needed his screenwriter fees to pay his mortgage. Then we had a long and expensive search to find the right actor for his part. When Cleavon Little auditioned, Richard was in the room and gave me a signal that he was our man!
