  1. Wiki is so weird about citations. I created a page for a novelist friend of mine, and it was flagged all over the place, upsetting my friend no end -- he thought it was somehow an attack on him. So I did a little searching. My friend -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anthony_Robinson_%28novelist%29 -- has written half a dozen good novels, so I started to look up other mid-ranked contemporary American novelists -- William Humphrey, Vance Bourjaily -- and found the same thing. The fact is, there are lots of people who've had careers you can be proud of, but haven't been written about a whole lot. Tony Robinson's novels have been reviewed, but it's not that easy to look up sources of pre-digital newspaper reviews from newspapers other than the New York Times. I did heroic work in finding sources, but Wiki still isn't satisfied.
  2. Slick deke play by the Twins.
  3. When's Pagan due back?
  4. Wright 3 Reyes 3 Pelfrey 3 Parnell 0.34 PFeliciano 0.33 Rodriguez 0.33
  5. Good for Lastings -- glad to see him coming through.
  6. I had no idea how Cuddyer's name was pronounced. I should change my scouting report.
  7. Shinjo was cool.
  8. Ralph Kiner led the league in home runs from his rookie year on, so there's a good chance he batted a lot of cleanup, but I can't find box scores from the 1940s, and I don't think he'd fit the midseason callup requirement.
  9. Henderson batted some cleanup, but not consistently.
  10. How common is it for a rookie brought up in midseason to be installed as the regular cleanup hitter? Anyone think of any other examples? Have the Mets ever done it before? I wondered about Mike Vail in 75, but UMDB tells me he batted third.
  11. No song -- just rhymed couplets. Here's another example of the same form: http://www.masthead.net.au/issue11/richards.html
  12. Mets at home to Twins from Minny-- Per request, here is the skinny. Behind the plate, we have Joe Mauer: Hits for average and power. At first base, it's Justin Morneau, He's so good, he could be porno. Second base, Orlando Hudson, Coulda been a Met, but was'n'. Lately, he's been hot as Gable, While Met counterpart's disabled. And at shortstop, JJ Hardy, Not the life of Minny's party, Not much bat, and not much range, Why'd they get him? It seems strange, Still, the Northland's where his home is, Dealt for ex-Met Carlos Gomez. The hot corner? Nicky Punto "Cause they have to, 'stead of want to. Not a monster, Delmon Young, But now and then the ball gets stung. Stolen base for Denard Span? If he gets to first, he can. In right field, it's Michael Cuddyer -- 'Bout as good as any other. Still, don't take this as derision -- Twins are leading their division. Starting pitching has been slumping, Opposition has been thumping, Friday's guy is Kevin Slowey, ERA is far from showy. Is there one that they can trust? Saturday, a Yankee bust, Now he kills like T. Soprano: I refer to Carl Pavano -- Maybe not an all-time great, But his WHIP is 1.08. Sunday shows us Scottie Baker -- Hasn't looked sharp -- Mets should take 'er. They've a skipper to admire, Ex-Met Ronald Gardenhire. Some say that their league is stronger, But perhaps that's true no longer: Bullpen suspect, bench not deep: I predict the Mets will sweep.
  13. This really broke me up.
  14. Reyes 3 Pagan 2 Igarashi 1
  15. And Jason leads off with a hit, after his worst swings of all last night.
  16. Mets have never put a young pitcher in the bullpen with an eye toward moving him into the rotation? What about Mejia?
  17. This actually raises Strasburg another notch in my estimation.
  18. I would be firmly opposed to saying anything good about Francesa.
  19. Takahashi - 3.5 PFeliciano - 2.5 Wright - 1 Davis - 1 Reyes - 1 Pagan - 1
  20. We all got it coming, kid. I was a Tak-to-the-bullpen guy until last night -- have now seen the error of my ways.
  21. Much was made of the Mets setting a record for quickest descent from first to last. What's the record for first to last and then back to first again?
  22. Edgy has it -- noun-pronoun agreement -- and yeah, the whole paragraph is a nightmare.
  23. If they moved my locker next to Jeter's, Jeter would become a different person.
