  1. "The Nye Mets are my favorite squadron!"
  2. Looks like I'm not getting the stream with my mlb.tv shlubscription. Yoenis is batting fourth and walked in his first plate appearance. Holland has shortstops all over the place, with Didi Gregorious staffing first, Andrelton Simmons at third, Xander Bogaerts as the actual shortstop, and Jurickson Profar in left. Jonathan Schoop, who has over 100 games of MLB experience at first is at second. I bet that just steams Didi. Eight-year MLB vet and 2016 Mets AAA player Roger Bernadina is The Netherlands' 39-year-old centerfielder. The Cubans are up 1-0 on an RBI hit by secondbaseman Yadil Mujica. Yadil is the rare bird who came to the US to play, gave it a shot, and then returned to the CNS.
  3. Well, I ain't gonna argue against your movie thing. But it's still some terrible football.
  4. As if Twenty-Three Skiddoo wasn't already America's favorite Crane Pool thread category, we now move on to me, Brett Baty. That's correct — despite not currently having a regular position assignment or even a likelihood of making the opening day roster, ZiPS has me predicted to put up the seventh most WAR on the 2023 Mets team. That's an average WAR of 3.2 in all their simulations. That's an average all right, but it is enough to put me in instant contention for Rookie of the Year! That may be ambitious. Mets GM Billy Eppler said I was called up last year because the Mets were in a situational need for a lefty bat, not because I had completed my minor leaguing, and that's only fair, considering I only spent six games with Syracuse. But hey, I (a) homered in my first at-bat, ( reached the bigs before Mark Vientos, and © have that ZiPS prediction going for me. You're smarter than ZiPS, I think. What do you say? 5. I think I've mentioned this before, but my favorite authenticity in Bull Durham is the pitching coach heading to the mound with a stride that looks like jogging but is actually slower than most walking. My wife picked up on this. A lot of what I don't like is that they try hard so hard to be on the nose that it shows.
  6. I think that's a rock-solid assumption. Credit to you for getting that far.
  7. I could be wrong, but I would guess that his union would likely be advising him here as well.
  8. I used to be somebody around here. For most of last year, Jacob deGrom was unavailable, and the starting rotation was a bunch of planets revolving around me. And it was good. Then deGrom was gone and it looked to be sort of locked in. As if to reinforce that, Taijuan Walker and Chris Bassitt wandered off to other locations as well. But then they went and brought Justin Verlander in, and folks started looking at me, as if unsure which one I was. I'm Max Scherzer. I've got three Cy Youngs, 201 career victories, and I'm coming off a season in which I posted a 2.29 ERA. It didn't end well, but I'm a big part of the reason it didn't end earlier, you know? A BIG part, and I intend to be so again. So it's 2023, and you're home in your warm beds, or sitting at your stupid desks, while I'm amping it up in Port St. Lucie. What I'm amping up to, however, remains an open question. If you have the courage — and I doubt you do — you can answer this question here and now. Prove me wrong. 9. May 13 against the Nats, sez I.
  10. July 18 against the Sox would be SO José Quintana.
  11. Spring training is ruining the WBC!
  12. As I recall, they wear Yankee uniforms, even though the name of the team is "The Mammoths." It's like, whatever licensing fees they have to pay to use the brand, they weren't interested in paying it to give the story actual MLB credibility. They were mostly interested in being able to splice in footage of actual Yankee action (playing at Shea Stadium) with the dramatized stuff. How come Old Jon Voight is in everything when you need an old white guy who used to be blond in the 1970s, but Old Michael Moriarity can't get arrested?
  13. A pleasure it is to present myself to you as the unlikely batting average champion of the National League. It was unlikely at the finish, I guess, but it wasn't unlikely overall, because teams were willing to play me to pull and pitch me away. That's pretty dumb, as good players are able to blast the ball through the opposite side of the infield by accident. Very good players are able to do it on purpose. For much of last year, I was a very good player. Yeah, it meant abandoning my pull swing for much of the season, but it's still there, and if that means occasionally driving a double to gap rather than golfing a homer to right, that's cool too. I can be productive without the longball. I proved that shit in 2022. With Canó gone and Baez gone and Giménez gone and Correa not signed and Mauricio not signed, I have a chance to finally prove something else — that I can plant myself at single position and keep it. A baseball team is always going to be made up of moving parts, but I've moved around more than most. For once I'm going into a season without having to guess where and when I'll be playing. That and a batting average championship is sweet. Being a two-time All Star is also. Tell me though ... just how sweet will my game be in response? ZiPS says 3.5 WAR. Your opining may differ. Please use numbers. 14. I have several other credibility problems with Field o'. Most of the actors playing the ghost players seem to be clearly on the dark side of 40. I can forgive that because life was hard and photos of pre-World War II baseball teams are frequently populated by guys who look old before their time. What really puts a booger in my butt is that the players they bring in to play against come from several different eras, but Moonlight Graham somehow recognizes the ones that would have predated his childhood, as well as ones that didn't debut until after Moonlight's teenage years. More egregious oversights seem to get overlooked in For the Love of the Game and Bull Durham.
  15. =dgwphotography post_id=119324 time=1678127254 user_id=78] I had my quibbles - Field of Dreams was ranked too high. Baseball's Not Dead went into whether the dirt was too dusty in Eight Men Out, but didn't say word about Shoeless Joe batting the wrong way in FoD?
  16. Oh, and number 17 (Everybody Wants Some) which first appears at about 38:50 in the above vid, features a sponser on the outfield wall named "Kasper's Met Market," so there's that.
  17. The only division worth breaking into regarding The Bad News Bears is whether it's the greatest baseball movie or whether it's the greatest sports movie.
  18. Baseball's Not Dead reviews baseball films, not on their general quality, but based on the quality of the baseball within. I have my quibbles, but I like that they went straight to Lucas as their football example of what they are looking for, a broadly marketed studio film that is just wrong and awful at every level. 19. That logo on his shoulder, only modestly touched by evolution, is still the one used by The Hagerstown Suns of today. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/f/f4/HagerstownSuns.png>
  20. No way that went through a translation filter.
  21. I'm pretty certain he said "claps."
  22. Fun Fact: I clicked the first of those links and the page loaded a little slowly, initially just reading: UG SISK
  23. What happens when the clock gamesmanship becomes a defining part of the game?
