  1. What happened to Peterson? Is he hurt? I don't think so. I believe it's just one of those latter-day practices that, if a pitcher, even a career-long starter, has been pitching out of the bullpen of late, upon joining the rotation, he is drastically reduced in the number of pitches he is permitted to throw until he is "stretched" by gradually increasing his limit. I'm not a fan.
  2. Keith Raad: "I'll never understand running onto the field. You cannot win." It's called beer, Keith.
  3. I'm not sure the homerun hitting is much of a plus. It's one of the only measures by which they are performing above average, but I think they are giving up a lot for their power — losing more in other areas than they are gaining in increased longball benefits. That's my impression, anyhow. It's also kind of undergirded a little by Brandon Nimmo (if no one else) outright saying that's what he's willingly doing.
  4. Imma guess that nobody's campaigning to "cancel" The 1910 Fruitgum Company Also, if The 1910 Fruitgum Company gets cancelled, does it make a sound?
  5. Diamondbacks rookie Slade Cecconi is pitching to Lamonte Wade, Jr., and appears to hit him in the hand with a 3-2 pitch. The batter runs to first, but the Diamondbacks challenge, and video evidence reveals that Wade wasn't hit at all, the pitch having actually careened off the knob of his bat. Well, we've seen that play. It's a foul ball and we'll do it all over again. But wait ... there's more coming over the wire from Chelsea! After hitting the knob of the bat, the ball deflected into the crotch of catcher José Herrera, and there it nestled. This was treated as a clean catch by Herrera, and therefore the pitch was ruled a foul tip that was caught. I'm not sure this is a correct interpretation of the rule, but it was the interpretation the umpires made, and thus Slade Cecconi recorded his first MLB strikeout.
  6. Ryan Clifford https://www.milb.com/gameday/cyclones-vs-blueclaws/2023/08/03/727056/final/boxhomered in his first trip to the plate with the Mets organization. Probably more importantly, he also singled and walked twice in his five appearances.
  7. I get back from picking up the dogs from the groomer and I decide to check the score. "It's still 3-0?" I think. I wonder if my phone is spontaneously refreshing as the game continues. So I reload the page. "Oh, it was stuck. It's actually 9-0." NOW I'll embrace comparisons with the worst team money can buy.
  8. In fairness, between trades (Cahna and Pham) and injuries (Nimmo and Marte*), the outfield isn't the outfield. It's mostly a bunch of day laborers who have little bearing on the past or the future. *Might as well throw Tim Locastro in there too.
  9. Rough. Rough to watch Michael Peréz get a call to be third string catcher while you're waiting by the phone.
  10. Crawling through series against the Nats and Royals is one thing, but the Orioles, Cubs, and Braves are bearing down on us like a trio of steam locomotives.
  11. And one last FUCK! from Jeff McNeil to make the evening complete.
  12. And there we are — a life.
  13. Bickford has the opposite of the unibrow, sort of rocking a solid two and half inches between his brows. https://img.mlbstatic.com/mlb-photos/image/upload/d_people:generic:headshot:67:current.png/w_213,q_auto:best/v1/people/641360/headshot/67/current> He'd like to know if you're talking to him. Then who the hell else are you talking to?

I got myself locked out of my room in a hotel, headed down to the lobby barefoot in my PJ bottoms and tee-shirt to get a replacement key card, and in front of me in the line at the front desk was John Thompson. I rolled my toes under my feet in terror that he would step on them.
  15. Bickford kind of falls off the mound like he's going to end up on his face after the pitch.
  16. Two more cracks to find their dignity.
  17. It's not that Vientos missed the tag, it's that he was out of position off the bag in the first place. He's a two-way player!
  18. "Trades are part of the game!!" says Keith, who was traded at 29 years old, and only reported to his new team, called his agent and asked if he had enough money to retire instead. And then, after his first game or two with his new team, was crying in the shower. They're a part of the game, but a crappy part, that doesn't have to be a part at all.
  19. Not slow enough, says the crew in Chelsea.
  20. It always surprises me to see how big Salvador Perez is. You don't get catchers that big and he seems to keep growing. Good for the Mets that he runs like it, though.
  21. McNeil is going to take all this stranding personally if it keeps up.

  23. His privacy might have been better respected had they not disclosed the non-baseball reason behind the assignment, but I don't get to write these things.
