Number four is clearly Dave Mlicki, but I'm not sure who would have "expected more."

Well, let's root and work for things more likely to work out. The Yankees contract with Carlos Rodón certainly isn't looking like one of those things.

He's less useful in our terrible era of the universal designated hitter, but he stretches a bench in multiple directions, so let's root for him to clear waivers. Max Kranick likely won't end up in Brooklyn at all — he's clearly at a higher level at this point in his career — but the crowd on the roster and the organization is such that, at this point in time, it's pretty easy to identify 25 guys ahead of him. His relative disadvantage hasn't come from poor performance, though, but time lost due to injury — the most relevant being his 2022 Tommy John surgery. So yeah, he's way back in the line, but if healthy and recovered , he can potentially come fast. In the meantime, it'll be fun to have a Max Cranick and a Yacksel Rios warming up in the pen side by side. If all three indeed made the opening day roster, one of them would be starting at second or third. It would be lovely if one of them emerged as such, but you'd hate to be forced into that position. Shedding him for now restores the Vientos-vs.-Baty showdown, and hey, maybe Castillo slips through waivers and lives to Met another day. A lot of relievers (both on and off the 40) sit ahead of Danny Young, but among lefthanders, only Brooks Raley (the Mets second-best relief option at the moment) and Nathan Lavender (hoping to break camp with Syracuse) sit ahead of him. So he's another guy far back in the line who could come fast. =metirish post_id=145038 time=1705250737 user_id=72]For all the talk about how Blake Snell doesn't throw enough innings, his agent, Scott Boras, points out several recent examples of teams valuing elite talent over proven durability in long-term deals for starting pitchers.

I'm not sure that's for MLB to fix. If we indeed identify it as a problem, then it's on all of us. To me, most problems with baseball is that we leave so much of it to be the province of MLB and their self-serving governance. But yeah, if two guys out of 26 on MLB rosters are catchers, and six percent of MLB players are African-American, then the number of African-American catcher is, by definition going to be small. The average amount of African-American catchers expected in the league under such circumstances is 3.6. Concerning ourselves with whether the actual amount is one or two or five or six seems to be missing the forest for the trees.

That's cool. Typewriter cards tell a great story, but they weren't published in 1968.

Counterpoints to the above commentary is mostly legit — though in the end, we're all shlubs. 1968 [fimg=300]https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/AOwAAOSwXYZlcIPU/s-l960.jpg[/fimg] [FIMG=300]https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/UV0AAOSwMexlcIPU/s-l960.jpg[/FIMG] Our 1968 entry (Topps 132) comes with that year's lovely woven-fabric-style framing. Bud again goes with a shot of an infielder preparing for a play to begin, and you'd almost think it was from the same shoot as his 1967 card, but gone is the World's Fair patch. His pantomine of preparing to make a play is a beat later than 1967's, as his hands are off his knees and prepared in front of him, as if the pitcher is halfway through his windup. Bud's steely blue eyes hone in on the imaginary batter. A new angle sets the background in right field, between the end of the tiers and the white painted concrete frame of the scoreboard, his nowhere-near-the-actual-shortstop-spot positioning betrayed by a firstbaseman — perhaps Ed Kranepool — warming up behind him. The Topps coloring processes of the time made blue-eyed Mets look dazzling on the cards, with their iris popping out of the shadows cast by their brims in the same splash of color as their hats. His now-fulltimer status is told on the back by the abstract describing him in glowing terms as "solidifying" the defense as "no play seems impossible," but they still use up space to include his minor-league numbers. Bud has arrived, but there still isn't enough in his big-league statistical record to tell his story numerically. Good on them for reaching back to his 1966 game-winning steal of home. https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/SFN/SFN196609160.shtmlThis may be the watershed game that established Bud as the Mets shortstop — hitting leadoff, he collected two-triples, a walk, a steal of second, and a ninth-inning steal of home to put the team ahead with swingman Jack Hamilton coming on to save it in the ninth. It was about as good a game as you can ask of from a homerless .196 hitter.
  8. Edgy MD
Yeah, that's doing it right, right there.

Well, I know I never complained about retired numbers. I thought that was something the Mets historically did more or less right, and now I think they don't. There are plenty of good ways to celebrate history — many that are yet to be tried. Allowing ourselves to get into a cold war race with other teams in inflating legacies seems so half thought out.

They didn't sign him, but grabbed him off waivers. And waiver wires tend to be populated by players who haven't particularly been prospering at the big league level.

1967 [FIMG=300]https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/F1MAAOSwEdRkwDXw/s-l960.jpg[/FIMG] Bud Harrleson is a figure that takes us through a changing age of baseball card art, and a rapidly changing age of Americana. While his career parallels much more high-profile types — Seaver, Jackson, Rose — few players span that era with such an under-the radar profile. Nobody ever paused before making a Harrelson card thinking, "THIS is the one I have to nail." A low, round number would never be reserved for Bud Harrelson, but stories of baseball and American culture abound in his cards, whether from the intended subject or the incidental stuff in the corners. Here we have Bud's Topps rookie card — 1967 #303. Unlike Tom Seaver and Nolan Ryan, he blessedly doesn't have to share his rookie card with some other shlub. On the other hand, he sadly had to wait a little bit before being immortalized in cardboard, having appeared cardlessly in the big leagues in 1965 and 1966. The photo is clearly from 1964 or 1965, as indicated by the World's Fair patch in place of the Mets logo on the sleeve. We can pretty confidently conclude it's 1965 as Harrelson spent the 1964 season in Salinas, California. Topps isn't yet in the habit of shooting Shea Stadium cards against the backdrop of the left field tiers, and are instead putting center field in the background — the giant left-center scoreboard peaks from one side, and the utter lack of development beyond the center field fence almost makes he's in a spring training Florida backwater and not New York City just around the corner from the World's Fair. Bud's a 21-year-old kid here, but the beaky nose and the intent stare beyond the camera already suggest the wise veteran looking for an edge. The Shea playing surface looks like the Mets water it maybe once every two weeks.

He strikes me as The King of the Ultimate Mets Database. How many people logged time as a Mets player, a Mets coach, a Mets manager, and a Mets broadcaster? He's clearly unique in this regard. The Mets version of the EGOT. Only Rusty Staub and maybe Yogi Berra come close, and not particularly. A Mets minor leaguer and a Mets opponent also. Like Frayed Knot above, Gary Cohen makes a note of his inheriting his job from Roy McMillan. Like Bud later, McMillan would get a chance to take over the team mid-season in 1975.

Benjamin Grimm wrote: Poorly, I would think. With hindsight, does anyone think otherwise? His winning percentage seems to, for whatever that's worth. My other cyber-memory of him was a member here (Soupcan?) reporting meeting him sitting in adjacent boxes in the field level seats at Shea and striking up a warm conversation. When Harrelson asked how he was recognized, our friend (again, Soupcan?) said that he spotted the profile immediately, and had his belief confirmed when he saw that Bud was wearing his championship ring. Bud then amazingly offered the ring to our fellow poster to examine up close. While our correspondent slipped the ring on and beheld it with awe, Harrelson spotted someone he knew and ran off to say hi, doubly amazingly leaving the ring behind with a stranger he had known all of a few minutes. When he returned, our correspondent asked Harrelson how in the world he could trust the ring with some rando in a seat next to him. Buddy shrugged and said, "That's my 1986 ring. I never would have let you touch the 1969 one."

In another thread, a couple of posters labeled the projected rotation for the Mets as "scary." While nothing indeed goes as projected, I decided to measure it up against division rivals, to see what illumiates. The projections below are from FanGraphs. They would be terrific even if they didn't have a rotation that is the class of the division. Alas, however, they do, so a few things are going to have to go sideways for them not to win and win big. Charlie Morton could disappear at any time, but it'll take more than that to sidetrack them. Philadelphia isn't in a particularly good team, but if the two guys at the top of the rotation bang away like FanGraphs thinks they should, they'll win a lot of games and be a post-season threat to anybody. These projections are largely based on playing out perhaps hundreds of season scenarios and publishing the average, so it takes a lot of confidence to predict Zach Wheeler will reach 200 innings — a figure they list for almost nobody. You'd figure that in 20% of the scenarios, he gets catastrophically injured, so he's pitching like 240 innings the rest of the time. Miami is a particularly bad team. Their rotation — at least according to these measures — looks perfectly respectable and stronger than ours, but the team has almost no offense beyond Jazz Chisolm, Jr. The Mets' key seems to be getting more innings out of the top of their rotation than FanGraphs is willing to predict, but the team's kid-gloving of Kodai Senga last season along with José Quintana's injury leave them bearish. It's a lot to ask Quintana to give them 200 innings of the same sort of work he turned in at the end of 2023, but that may be what they'll need. Washington looks like a washout. They're the kind of team that doesn't know if they want the Trevor Williamses of the world to hang in there, or to lose their spot to someone else. It'll be a long hot summer in DC, but the fans will always have 2019. Trades, injuries, disgusing childhood illnesss, and sudden rapid leaps forward from obscure names still have yet to play out, so this is merely a frame of the movie, if not the most encouraging of frames. The Mets also seem to be the strongest in the 6-through-8 slots. Part of that is the greater number of starts expected to go to those guys, but part of it is simply projecting stronger there. So when guys start going down, this thread is worth revisiting. Also, Spencer Strider seems like a dickhead.

Somebody at the MOFo told a story of meeting Felix Millan. I think Felix had stopped him to ask for directions down in Florida or something, and ended the conversation by pointing to the guy's Mets hat and saying, "I used to play for the Mets. I played with Bud Harrelson." Felix had a terrific baseball career. It was something to me that, of all things to sum up his Mets tenure, he went with 'I played with Bud Harrelson'." Cool picture, KC.

Ouch. I was just curious about We Need to Talk About Steve being used as a thread title.

Despite us mostly referring to him as "Imanga" in this thread, official sources seem to insist his name is "Imanaga." It's probably our fault he didn't sign here.

I feel like we're hitting a curious era of Wes Anderson-y movies that aren't Wes Anderson movies. It'll probably lead to some weak derivatives, but also open up some new avenues for other talented folks. I'm happy to see early returns here suggest this might be the latter.

Number 1 is Brian Bohannon, who's surname actually makes me think of a Tom Tom Club song.
