  1. Number 3 is Willie Mays.
  2. =Cowtipper post_id=152059 time=1713229852 user_id=166] Holderman > Vogelbach
  3. I would have guessed two dozen guys before Max Muncy. Maybe more.
  4. Here's two legit ones: Daulton Jefferies and Daulton Varsho were both named after Darren Daulton.
  5. I tend to think every player named Nolan or Ryan is named after Nolan Ryan. Especially if they're white. Doubly especially if they're white and from Texas.
  6. God bless Álvarez. He'll take pitches with runners on, but you can tell from his body language that he hates it.
  7. Frayed Knot wrote: Major League ballplayers named for major league ballplayers: O'Neil Cruz (Paul) Jeter Downs (Derek) Mickey Mantle (Cochrane) Willie Mays Aiken (duh!) Ryne Sandberg (Duren) Robinson Cano (Jackie) I think I read somewhere that Hall of Famer Ken Griffey was named after somebody too.
  8. Bob Aspromonte, Tommy Brown, Carl Erskine, Jim Gentile, Fred Kipp, Sandy Koufax — Jackie Robinson's remaining living Dodger teammates. (Erskine is 98!) Presumably, he still has a Montreal Royal teammate or two out there. Maybe even a UCLA Bruin.
  9. The Mets can really honor Jackie Robinson with bunt hits followed by tearing up the basepaths.
  10. Jane Son needs to hold up her QR code to the camera better.
  11. David Robinson has some interesting thoughts, but took some time getting around to them. We're pretty close to the time where the stand-in for Jackie Robinson's legacy has moved from his widow to his kids to his grandkids.
  12. Jackie Robinson Day seems to have snuck up on me.
  13. O'Neill Cruz has some holes in that swing.
  14. Pat Mahomes is again the answer to #1.
  15. Baty back in there against the lefty. 16. The answers are Ralph Kiner and Jesus.
  17. Number two is Pat Mahomes.
  18. The Mets try to complete their recovery from an oh-and-five start by hosting the Pittsburgh Pirates, Major League Baseball's only team whose name definitively suggests they engage in criminal behavior. The Buccarinos started off on a tear, opening with an opposite-of-the-Mets run of five-and-oh, which continued on to nine-and-two with two walkoff wins over the impressive Baltimore Orioles. They have since cooled a bit, losing three of their last five, including a four-game split with Philly. It's not really clear how they've done it, as they have a solid lineup all around, but nobody has opened on a tear, with Oneil Cruz and utility outfielder Edward Olivares tying for the team homerun lead with three. Ke'Bryan Hayes is probably their best hitter still, but he hasn't homered yet. I'm sure they're happy just to get Cruz back on the field, but apart from those homers, he's making a lot of wind, currently tied for third in the league in strikeouts. Lefthander Martín Pérez has been their best pitcher on another solid top-to-bottom unit, and lo and behold, that's who we draw tonight. Perez is a good veteran starter, but he's not 1.89 ERA over 19 innings good, and it's hard to believe that he's figured it out now at 33. But if there's hope for him, there's certainly hope for his opponent, 31-year-old Adrian Houser. David Bednar is scuffling as closer and it seems only a matter of time before Aroldis Chapman takes over. The world just needs to (a) get used to seeing Chapman in a Pirates uniform and ( get over the strange video that appeared online this offseason of Chapman groping his mother. The Mets haven't really gotten a weak team yet, have they?
  19. I waited this long for a WiSf24? thread, and I'm still looking to break the seal on my 2024, so you might as well get your thoughts in. I'm a Tommy John Surgery survivor out of the University of Miami with a dark piercing intensity, and an "I'm done with this shit" style of throwing, like a tradesman chucking his tools across the workshop in frustration. Growing restless following my surgery and the long COVID layoff, I put aside my baseball aspirations to pursue life as an orthopedic surgeon. A SURGEON! But the Mets offered me a deal, and when the Mets come calling, you put everything else aside. So now I operate on hitters as I surgically dismantle their strike zone, with medical pursuits pushed back as long as I can successfully excise batters from opposing lineups. How long will that be? How precise is my cutting? How steady my hands? Will I stay on the right side of the scalpel? Lemme know, hotshots. Lemme know. 20. He made those coattails.
  21. That's great, and particularly great that an untouchable like Harper is out front. I hope it's universal by June.
  22. More importantly, Mets Roster Central has only recently discovered that his name is more correctly stylized with an accent over the O, suggesting that his surname perhaps shouldn't be spoken with the common BOO-toe pronunciation, but is perhaps more correctly articulated as boo-TOE.
  23. Imma guess Paul Maholm.
