1. Feels like they've been particularly effective against lefties of late.
2. I'm sure that Joe DiMaggio was nice to cats and stuff, but that what an ugly play that was by him and/or his people.

But only if he had done it as long as, say, Carlton Fisk, would his career have surpassed Henderson's. Juan Marichal wasn't shown, either - He is a Hall of Famer, too. Later As is Harold Baines and Jack Morris. I didn't mean to suggest, by invoking Johnny Bench, that all Hall-of-Famers should be candidates for this title.
4. Like the children of George Washington and Babe Ruth before him, Willie's only child was adopted. Whatever chance or spirit watches over America sometimes seemingly decides that a bloodline has fulfilled its destiny, or perhaps that it's too much for another generation to bear.
5. Singhandedly wrecked Washington in an August 20, 2020 game at Citi Field, with a two-run homer in the fourth, followed by a grand slam in the fifth. He hung around afterwards and every fan in attendance left with an autograph. He looked to be perhaps having a breakthrough season and maybe about to displace Wilson Ramos as the number-one backstop, but he played only two more games before a positive COVID test knocked him off the roster, followed by three weeks in bed and the end of his season. The reporting later suggested it was an ugly bout and he was in real danger once or twice.

7. If he was catching — more than one or two days a week, anyhow — something probably wasn't breaking right. Off to the Cubs he goes now, having an provided able, if underwhelming (ably underwhelming? underwhelmingly able?), alternative to Francisco Álvarez, Travis d'Arnaud, José Lobatón, Patrick Mazeika, James McCann, Devin Mesoraco, Omar Narváez, Michael Peréz, Kevin Plawecki, Wilson Ramos, René Rivera, Gary Sánchez, Chance Sisco (who?), and Luís Torrens. Had a way of getting hurt whenever he was hitting and staying doggedly healthy during the long periods he wasn't. Who can tell about these things, but he seemed persistently decent. Perhaps didn't have a personality big enough for his position. 8. Everybody's favorite shake-endorsing anthropomorphic mascot character threw out the first pitch in one of the games on the last homestand. It was as ridiculous as it sounds, and it would have been an LOLMETS moment (especially as he has the wrong glove) had they had their heads handed to them. But they didn't. They won, and they've been undefeated ever since, so its a thing. Don't look at me that way. None of this was my doing.
9. I could make a case for most of those guys. Not Rose, though. I went for Trout, after applying steroidish penalties to others, but it's TELLING that you did not include Shohei Ohtani or Ichiro Suzuki on an otherwise comprehensive list.
10. "A flag for the people of New York."
11. Frayed Knot wrote: Not a game Bochy should put into his HoF application file. With a good chunk of the team slumping, options on the bench to pinch-hit for Leody Taveras weren't great, but they were pretty much all better than Taveras, who is in the mother of all slumps. Even the nominal advantage of being a switch-hitter able to bat lefty against the righthanded Díaz wasn't much of an advantage at all, because it made him less likely to get hit. Bruce looks tired.
12. Nine teams within two games. CLUSTER!
13. Bucs? Passed 'em. Friars? Passed 'em. Nats? Tied 'em. Jints? Tied 'em. That was a lot of standings progress for one night. Mets now a half game out of the third Wild Card slot, and a single game out of the second slot. Also, tying the Nats also puts them into a third-place tie in the division. https://metsrostercentral.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/screen-shot-2024-06-18-at-11.06.51-pm.png>

15. I thought Nimmo was going to end it with a basket catch.
16. Is that the second pop Vientos watched drop in this series?
17. Might have had another run home if they had somebody available to pinch-run for Martinez.
18. After further review, Alonso is suddenly awesome again.

20. Raise a glass to mark the passing of longtime MLB player and coach Mike Brumley who was killed over the weekend in a massive car wreck in Mississippi. Mike was a classic punchless utility infielder but in 1987 hit the first of his three career homers off of Ron Darling.
21. GORGEOUS!! That was even off the bat handle a little for Álvarez.
22. It's not often you see double-barrel action anymore.
23. It was as good a 40-year-old batting season as there was baseball history, at least until the steroid era. And despite what folks say about his Mets career, his 41-year-old season was pretty terrific too, despite being only half a season. He had a .400 OBP!! In 1972!!
24. Former Met Bochy tells former Met Maddux to get former Met Robertson into the game.
