I mean to suggest that recounting failed outcomes from past years isn't particularly instructive to what is the wisest move to do today. Not to me, anyhow. That's water over the dam, under the bridge, down the toilet, and passed on through other places water goes to. It would be more relevant, perhaps, if we compared the decisions they made in past years — along with those moves' outcomes and ultimate impacts — to decisions they may or may not make in 2024.

It's long past time to upgrade the team given that these chances don't come around very much. Go get Flaherty and Tanner Scott. Well, the Mets probably won't be using any of their 1994 players down the stretch.
  3. Nah. It's awesome. I believe in the Mets I got. That said, I suspect something is still yet to go down.
  4. I may be misremembering, but at the 1/3 point, it seemed like the three teams going nowhere were Miami, Denver, and Oakland. So it's pretty surprising get to the 2/3 point, and see that the White Sox are having a far worse season than any of them. OE: Looking back to May 31, yeah, Chicago was doing pretty terribly back then also. Heck, they were 6-24 on April 30. This is apparently who they were all along.
  5. The Yankees haven't clinched anything from where I'm sitting.
  6. Flaherty is a free agent at the end of the year, without a giant salary this year. I imagine every buying team in the league would like him.
  7. Deadline trades are rarely enough to satisfy the fans of buyers, and when they are satisfying in the short term, it's often because the acquisition has a big name, but remorse kicks in soon enough. As deGrom hasn't yet appeared in 2024, and as his last injury update is "close to facing live hitters" (he's really dominated dead hitters, and looked pretty good against undead hitters too), I'm guessing he's not going to happen, and probably can't even be traded under the current rules.
  8. Back within a half game of the Braves tonight. Also pull within nine games of the Phillies, who got pantsed by the Yankees.

Only listening via radio here so either Howie came up with it independently or needs to a better job with attribution. Good show. It might well have been independent. Probably was. I was thinking you were referring to Cohen, for some reason.
  10. I forgot he had ever played for them.
  11. I'm glad I was able to shame Wallner into throwing two fastballs.
  12. It was actually Gelbs introducing the stretching-out thesis. And yeah, makes some sense. As for position-player-pitchers, like you, Matt Wallner, you're a grown-up athlete, man. Throw like it. You pitched in college, for Pete's sake. Your folks could be watching.
  13. And here I thought I was the only one in the dark.
  14. =Gwreck post_id=164595 time=1722303414 user_id=56] Leading 10 runs is a very odd time to be using a key bullpen weapon (Butto).
  15. With Gamel reaching, that's 11 Mets in the hit column. I imagine that's not a record, because teams carry decidedly fewer hitters than they used to, but it's cool that 100% are on the knock list.
  16. Everyone in the lineup is in the hit column today, including both of the rightfielders the Mets have deployed.
  17. Wow. Jeffers was halfway to third before he realized that was caught.
  18. It's 11-1. Please get Bader out of there. It's Gamel Time.
  19. His signature moment, getting the save against the Yankees at YSII, striking out Judge as the winning run, with the tying run on, took place only six days ago. Tough bidness indeed. The dude lit up the Empire State Building and lost his job within a week.
  20. I should have gotten to the bottom of this months ago, and I guess I've felt stupid asking, but the Mets celebration of a base hit this season has been the batter-runner turning toward the dugout from his perch on one of the bases, extending the left arm, bending the elbow at 90 degrees to point in the air, and waving his right hand underneath. What, besides "Hooray! I got a hit!" is this supposed to represent?
  21. "If he left that one over the plate, it would have become a ... Vinny Bomberino." — Keith, with a new name for a homerun
  22. The problem is that interwoven, two-tone [FIMG=15]https://s.yimg.com/it/api/res/1.2/OpnaYQMuBnlNMOapaOz0yg--~A/YXBwaWQ9eW5ld3M7dz0xMjAwO2g9NjMwO3E9MTAw/https://s.yimg.com/cv/apiv2/default/mlb/20230410/500x500/minnesota-twins_wbg.png[/FIMG] is pretty much the most inscrutable-and-yet-beguiling hat display in the game. Kids everywhere have become smarter and better people asking questions and learning answers about that insignia. Meanwhile, Quintana has me wanting to join Q-Anon. Where do I sign up?

  24. Good for Gary noticing Simeon's missing hyphen. I was wondering the same thing.
