The thing that gets it is the perfect transformation. They go from prim, mousy wage-earners trying to keep their heads down and not get noticed, and then they put on a game face, stare down the pitcher without remorse, and take a merciless cut, violently turning the pitcher's best offering into an arching speck in the sky. Then they pause just a beat before running, in order to inhale all the dejection pouring out of the pitcher.

A potential breakthrough year 2024 turned out to be a lost season, and now the team's former top prospect is flying below the radar. But hey, that can be a good place to fly, right? With the guns pointed at other guys, Ronny can show the form that made him a winter league MVP. Or maybe the form that made him a winter league casualty. Could go either way, right? Kind of working in his favor is that the two guys most immediately threatening to overtake him — Luisangel Acuña and Jett Williams — both suffered setbacks of their own, through regression and injury, respectively. So Ronny can still make his mark, and his fast hands and explosive bat speed are still his calling card. Will you pick up that card? And if you do, what will you write on the back? Let's get excited. If anybody is ever going to get excited over a third-string catcher, why not this one?

Chad ochoseis wrote: James McCann, more like James TomatoCann. That guy sucks and it's been Met-documented The shocker is that is occupation is still "major league baseball player". Get yourself a reputation as a good defensive catcher and you'll always have a job. I'm guessing Henry Blanco is still on a 40-man roster somewhere I don't think about much, like Seattle. Led the league in caught-stealing percentage in 2023, and was much closer to offensively passable with the O's the last two years than he ever was with the Mets. He is unemployed, and probably with good reason, but his package is pretty close to what backup catchers tend to look like. Like many substandard hitters, just a dozen more walks per year and he'd have a gig. I just hope you are all ready for Chris Williams Fever.

I hope Chris Williams is young enough at 28. FUN FACTS: He is apparently part Japanese, as his middle name is Kenichi, or 賢. He plays all over, logging time at first, third, left, right, and (naturally) pitcher. While in the Minnesota system, he was honored with The Harmon Killebrew Award, recognizing the player at each Twins affiliate who demonstrates outstanding commitment to community service. Slugged 38 homers in 709 plate appearances over the last two seasons in AAA.

And while his walks caught up to him a little, leaving him with a 4.08 career ERA, that 2.60 figure in 2024 was nothing to sneeze at. Those strikeouts and that homerun-stinginess will play. 40-Player Roster guys as it does NRI guys. The big surprise, however, is Kevin Herget, who most of the MRC staff had pegged for pretty much a-lock-if-healthy status for the Opening Day roster. But he does have an option, and this is what options are for. The bump gives a great big opportunity for Dedniel Nuñez, who has had the numbers really going against him, despite being the Mets' best reliever for three weeks or maybe more last summer. (In fairness, that same compliment could be paid to about a half dozen guys from last year.) Had he not already been smuggled through waivers, this opportunity might have belonged to Sean Reid-Foley, but I think the Mets don't think he is fully recovered enough to treat as a serious option. Chris Williams gets first dibs at that backup catcher spot, but it is probably wide open for Jakson Reetz, Kevin Parada, and Hayden Senger to show their quality. It'll be pretty hard for Parada, though, as he has already been dismissed from big-league camp. Kodai Senga was supposed to carry the most water in 2024, but when he went down early in the spring, it was Sean Manaea who picked up Senga's bucket and carried it for most of the season. So naturally, when the Mets brought him back, it was Manaea who went down early this spring. That's hopefully only part of the story for this hirsute and heavily tattooed lefthander. Clearly ZIPS had already been expecting a fallback year if they were already predicting fewer fWAR for Seannie than for Jared Young even before he got hurt, but we're in that in-between region where he may be back in two weeks or he may never be seen again. So many opinions from people who just don't know. But you know. So it is you we are asking: How will Sean Manaea thrive in Twenty-Five? [FIMG=389]https://cdn.newsday.com/ace/c:MTY2M2I2M2QtMGM1MS00:ZDNjMmZiMTMtMDUyMC00/landscape/1280[/FIMG] [FIMG=311]https://nypost.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2024/05/Sean-Manaea-2.jpg?quality=75&strip=all[/FIMG] [FIMG=350]https://nypost.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2024/10/new-york-mets-pitcher-sean-91575843.jpg?resize=662[/FIMG] [FIMG=350]https://s.hdnux.com/photos/01/37/12/60/24947740/3/1920x0.jpg[/FIMG]

I am sure they are being considered. Whether the Mets have good reason to believe McCann (or the like) is a better option than Williams is an open question however. Torrens was a journeyman with -0.3 career bWAR on a minor-league contract with the Yankees when the Mets plucked him from obscurity. They ended up releasing two more experienced big-leaguers in order to stick with him.

=ashie62 post_id=186995 time=1741701901 user_id=90] You're making that up Seriously, you really believe that? OK

I just now realize that Mikey is holding his hands like that because Schmitty just signed his ball and he is cradling it with both hands for protection.

If it doesn't say that, then I guess he doesn't, but I don't see how that's of any consequence.

For what it is worth, I am a fan too — an engaged one. And I knew no more than most — and clearly less than many. The failure here was not that of autograph seekers, and I apologize for any accidental implication. In the death of traditional journalism, our fact-based system of announcing the passing of our fellow citizens has been badly damaged. We publicly mourn people who have not died, and that just adds to the noise that drowns out any honest decent reporting of people who have actually died. I have my feelings about that. They are sad.

Edgy MD wrote: Yeah, I do not know what is in dispute. You seemed to be coming off like Met fandom should have been more aware of Bob Gallagher's passing back in August. I am not coming off like anything. I wrote that something was sad. I wrote that because it was sad. I did not and would not indict my fellow fans.

School-age Mike Piazza meets Mike Schmidt, doesn't know what to do with hands. [FIMG=450]https://metsinpeace.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/piqaa.jpg[/FIMG]

Well, then, he is going to have to field and run the bases REALLY well to get to that 1.7 WAR that ZIPS is predicting. Or maybe walk a few dozen times.

When you have two backup infielder guys, you tend to have one who is more likely to back up up the middle, offering defense first, and one who is more likely to back up on the corners, ideally being the better hitter of the two. Hopefully, their skill sets overlap, and you can move them both around, but assuming they are unlikely to present as well-rounded enough to be starters, those are the profiles they gravitate towards. Well, with the general proliferation of relief pitchers and the more specific apparent surfeit of outfielders the Mets are carrying this year, it is likely only one backup infielder comes north, and that is a shame if your name is Jared Young, because that second job would totally be yours. Jared has played all over the field, but makes his living on the corners and swinging the stick, but hasn't yet established himself as a big-league hitter at 29 years and 244 days. But the native of Prince George, British Colombia, has been tagged for 1.7 fWAR in 2025. That is as much as David Peterson and 0.1 more than Sean Manaea! Ronny Mauricio, Luisangel Acuña, Tylor Megill, Tyrone Taylor, and Jesse Winker are looking up at his projection from even lower down, even as most of them are far more likely to go north on opening day! What is up with this guy? What does ZIPS know that you do not? More importantly, what do you know that ZIPS does not? I amn't indicting autograph collectors specifically, just the sad societal irony that somebody is important enough for his signature to be collectable, but still insignificant enough for his passing to go un-noted.
