  1. I also think Howard Johnson's been an enabler, trying to help him adjust to he new situation. I mean, the guy was hitting what? About eight homers to right center per season at Shea? How much damage can Citi really do? Two or three of those homers still go out, two or three become outs, and two or three become doubles. Is that worth screwing up your swing over? Because the acknowledgment that he's knowingly screwed up his swing is the real story here.
  2. ="The Daily News"]One day after Twins star Justin Morneau called for the fences to be moved in at Minnesota's Target Field, Wright also reiterated his frustration with the dimensions of Citi Field despite his rebound from a career-low 10 homers in'09 to 29 last season. "I don't think there's any question that it affects your thought process and your swing," Wright said. "I've kind of learned firsthand that you're just not going to hit very many opposite-field home runs at Citi. ... But you just have to deal with it, you have to know the opposing team is going to have to deal with it, and really move on. If they change it, they change it."
  3. Oliver Perez trying to learn to pitch again (which is the greatest love of all), appearing out of the bullpen with the Tomateros de Culiacn in the Mexican Winter League. He's so far put up a 7.36 ERA in three appearances That's certainly not good, but it's not as bad as it sounds and it may be the Hell he has to walk thrugh if he ever to find his way back. He's got two walks and six strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings, which suggests he's (mostly) throwing strikes. He's meanwhile given up no jonrones and has a 1.5:1 GO ratio, so the strikes he's throwing aren't getting rocketed by the fringe hitters he's facing, but are finding the grass nonetheless. Hopefully they do what Jerry wouldn't in September and throw him out there to start sooner or later. He could use the love. Vivan los Tomateros!
  4. Oh, grow up.
  5. I can't. I have a rape scene-averse date. What can I say?
  6. This has a rape scene in the opening. Are they going to keep flashing back on it?
  7. Do I? I just guess it shook out that way because of partial seasons by the Mets top two starters, and the other two coming in with a third-of-the-season block pitching consitently poorly. But, of course, Rodriguez missed meaningful time (in volume, if not in import) too. I'll review.

  9. The only question is whether you deliberately obtuse are not, but I really dislike when you force an argument on somebody that they are not making. The number 30 is a factor, not a product.

  11. We're going in circles here here. As you point out, Mazzilli's ranking of 30 would not have happened had he had he been on the 1985 team. Better teammmates typically generate more wins, but lower rankings. So Gooden's better score is not the product of better teammates, but better Gooden, standing out in a better field, and getting more points for it. Gooden scores higher, not because he had better teammates, but because he towered above better teammates. Gooden received 8,820 points. Mazzilli received 6,030. That's not a particularly accurate representation of their relative worth (Gooden is probably worth at least two Mazzes, not 1.46), but it's not that innacurate either, and we're talking about an extreme case.

  13. make up your own system.
  14. Relative to the league, Bobby Bonilla was a two time All-Star with the Mets. Dykstra none. On the other hand, bb-r.com says Bonilla had 8.7 WARs for the Mets. Dykstra had 16.4.
  15. We've had some leniancy in that system.
  16. The root of the formula is (R^2*W)/10 R is Ranking with a number one ranking equal 30 and a number 30 ranking equaling 1. W is wins by the team (pro-rated to 162 for strike- or weather-shortened years). There's also some adjustments made for playoff success. So, while Bob Ojeda's 1986 was not the best season by any Met ever (probably not in the top ten), that season got him the most points of any player in a single season. But it works a lot better in the macro than in the micro.
  17. i've got some work to do here. The true legacy of Gary Matthews, Jr. may be that he took enough time away from Angel Pagan to keep him from being the top Mets player.
  18. I certainly think that's the order they are meant to be consumed in.
  19. "When I was 19, I had no idea of the things he knows." --- Carlos Beltran on Wilmer Flores after spending some rehab time with St. Lucie
  20. Were the time travellers young and sexy?
  21. The truth is that even the book doesn't hold together if you look close enough at the plot. Part of what additionally makes it confusing is the existence of the motion picture code. The criminals at the center of Marlowe's investigation were part of a pornography ring, but the script was unallowed to mention the existence of pornography. They may have gotten in a few euphemistic references to "funny books" or something, but it's not easy to sort that out right away, and even harder as time has passed and references have become more obscure. He breaks into Geiger's house and the place is decorated in cheap orentalism and the younger sister (I think) is passed out in a silk dress. Well, we're all supposed to get the picture of what's going on. OK.
  22. I thought I had a previous poll on this, but can't find it.
  23. Cineaste, indeed. Hey, Bertie, "Here's lookin' at you, kid" was from another movie!
  24. A lot of references to classic flim in 80s music --- songs taken from film titles ("Notorious," "Tender Is the Night") and actors' names ("Bette Davis Eyes," "Bella Lugosi's Dead," "Robert DeNiro's Waiting"); albums taken from film titles (The Red Shoes); and bands whose names come from classic characters (Duran Duran), settings (Heaven 17), film posters (Frankie Goes to Hollywood), or directors (The Cocteau Twins). A lot of cineastes going into music-making at the time.
