'Cuz when you post at 2 AM.... Buchholz was being treated for clinical depression. I don't know what hole Alvarez fell into.

I'm always taken by suprise when these leagues start play before the World Series. These are the guys Amazin' Avenue is reporting as playing in the winter leagues. I would have thought there'd be more and won't be shocked to find there are more. I was kind of hoping to see Taylor Buchholz and maybe Jenrry Mejia, among others. Manny Alvarez, with your 10 innings pitched in the summer of 2011, what say you? Anyhow, we've got three infielders down south. Two showed up with their hitting sticks. Gamboa is kind of a secret, as he started 2011 late in the Gulf Coast League, tore the cover off the ball for 17 games, moved up to Savannah, kept hitting, and then was loaned out to Mexico City in the Mexican League, something that's done, but not usually with players so young or low down in the minors. But he held his own there even, going .265 / .302 / .465 // .771 in 21 games. Please vote for your top five Mets relief pitchers of 2011. They will be awarded five points for each first-place vote, four for each second-place vote, etc. He with most points after a week is awarded the Crane Pool Forum Tug McGraw Award for Outstanding Mets Relief Pitcher. By my understanding, such as it is, 21 Mets and ex-Mets potentially qualify for this award: Manny Acosta, Miguel Batista, Pedro Beato, Blaine Boyer, Taylor Buchholz, Tim Byrdak, Chris Capuano, D.J. Carrasco, R.A. Dickey, Dillon Gee, Danny Herrera, Ryota Igarashi, Jason Isringhausen, Pat Misch, Jonathon Niese, Mike O'Connor, Bobby Parnell, Mike Pelfrey, Francisco Rodriguez, Josh Stinson, and Dale Thayer. Please vote so we may honor the most esteemed of the Mets' relievers. Tweeters, please send the word out to Crane Pool Nation. *Please also forgive the table below for leaving in categories that reliever can't really qualify for, such as starts, complete games (although I believe Neil Allen once was credited with a "complete game" in relief while pitching for the Yankees), and shutouts. I was in a hurry. Marte shows some harte. Mets' Marte makes first AFL homer a big one Third base prospect hits go-ahead two-run blast in eighth inning By Ashley Marshall / Special to MLB.com | 10/15/11 8:01 PM ET Jefry Marte was off to a slow start in the Arizona Fall League, but that could be starting to change. The Mets' No. 10 prospect slugged his first fall homer Saturday afternoon as the Peoria Javelinas held on for an 8-7 victory over the Scottsdale Scorpions. Serving as the Javelinas' designated hitter, Marte snapped an eighth-inning tie with a two-run blast -- his second extra-base hit in seven AFL games. Peoria hitting coach Alonzo Powell said it's only a matter of time before the 20-year-old gets back on track. Jefry Marte hit .248 with seven homers and 55 RBIs in 131 games in the Florida State League. (Mark LoMoglio/MLB.com)"He's a young kid with a lot of potential with pretty good strength and good bat speed," Powell explained. "He's a lot like the other kids here, he just needs a little fine-tuning. There was not really an adjustment in his swing. He had a pitch to hit in his at-bat before and he popped it up in the infield. The next time, he got a pitch he could handle." Marte, a native of the Dominican Republic, was hitless and struck out twice in his first three at-bats before coming up with one on and out out in the eighth. After taking Pat Lehman's slider for ball one, he pulled the next pitch over the left-center field fence. "He got a 1-0 fastball up in the zone and he put a good swing on it to left-center field," said Powell, a former Major League outfielder. "He's been swinging the bat well and he came through with a big hit for us today. I see a kid that has got really good bat speed and gap-to-gap power. He just needs to be more confident." A Futures Game selection this summer, Marte was not the only Mets prospect to deliver a big hit for Peoria (6-5). Center fielder Juan Lagares went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer, his second. He's batting .389 (7-for-18) with four RBIs in four games as one of two players on the Javelinas' taxi squad. "Juan came through with two strikes," Powell noted. "He got a fastball up in the zone, too, and hit it into the bullpen. He is a five-tool type of player and he plays a real good center field. He has a lot of potential. "We make sure we try to get him in there on Wednesdays and Saturdays. He's done a good job and he's been working hard. It is difficult for [Lagares and Zelous Wheeler]. Everybody else is playing every day, and if you're playing every day and have a bad game, you can make up for it quickly. They're in a difficult situation and they understand that. When they do play, they make the most of it." Wheeler, a Brewers prospect who hit .272 in 82 games between Double-A Huntsville and Triple-A Nashville this season, was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Mariners top prospect Nick Franklin also had two hits, drove in two runs and scored once. Giants shortstop Brandon Crawford went 3-for-5 with an RBI to raise his average to .360 for Scottsdale, while Angels outfielder Mike Trout -- MLB.com's No. 1 prospect -- chipped in two hits. Cardinals right-hander Keith Butler (1-1) tossed a hitless inning for the win and Padres prospect Miles Mikolas picked up his first save, despite allowing a run on three hits in the ninth. Lehman (0-1), who pitched at two levels in the Nationals system, was charged with two runs -- one earned -- on two hits and a walk while fanning two over two innings. Ashley Marshall is a contributor to MLB.com. This story was not subject to the approval of Major League Baseball or its clubs.

The real challenge is deciding whether to seriously consider Young and Batista.

Holy Snoops! I was on the right track the first time with Kevin Morgan. Morgan, the team's minor league infield coordinator (who got one at-bat with the team in 1997), and minor league outfield coordinator Jack Voight were there first two reported interviews for the first base coaching job. My thinking is that we need both of their likes on the job. Well, both he and Brandon Fuentes complained about "unorthodox" managing style, which I took to mean "not coddling the closer." I get that he wasn't ready to go down by locking people into roles they weren't succeeding at. But I guess he was juggling them and not letting them know their changing stati. That's not cool, but... they failed him, too, you know?

Heyman today on CNNSI: Jim Riggleman would have been a great choice for Mets bench coach. He is close with Terry Collins. Of course, the front office there seems to hold all the power, so it's not a surprise that they hired as bench coach another Oakland friend, Bob Geren, who wasn't too well-liked by some A's players. In an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle, Huston Street called Geren, "My least favorite I have ever encountered in sports.'' Frayed Knot wrote: Darryl Strawberry extending his arms against Nolan Ryan is a whole lot of power, and in this case resulted an a long homer down the rightfield line. I remember that HR for how atypical a Strawberry swat it was; instead of the high almost punt-like paths to CF/LCF that were his usual fare, this one was a line-drive down the RF line that didn't get much higher than the top of the fence and got there so quickly that it could easily have wound up a single until it just snuck over the wall before ricocheting back-and-forth four or five times between the shell of the stadium where the old 341' mark had been and the back of the then "new" wall. You're right. I was duped by a bad description. It was a liner, not a parabola.

You know, Mike Hampton's face kinda always looked like he was watching porn.

Willie Randoph Mantooth, cut loose as the Orioles third base coach and back on the market. Watch out, Red Sox.

Well, Geren puts a catcher on the staff, but I'd still like to see somebody who has reputation with coaching infielders and/or outfielders and I'm not thinking Teufel is that guy. Raise your hand if you knew Geren and Backman have the same birthday.
