  1. A week from now, the Marlins arrive in New York, displaying for the first time Jos Reyes as a member of the opposition. The News reports that the Mets plan to present a video tribute to Reyes' Mets career, perhaps not unlike that they offered when Mike Piazza returned to Shea as a Padre. The problem of course will be that such a gesture will underscore the meekness with which they pursued re-signing their all-star shortstop, and get them ripped. "If you cared so much, why did you let him leave?" Yet not to do it would be classless, and they would be ripped. They're going to get ripped either way. And I guess I'm glad they're doing more-or-less the right thing. No Jos-Jos-Joss by the second at-bat, though. All bets are off then.
  2. I assume because he's awesome.
  3. Very strange. I mean, while the guy is quiet, to the extent that he does express himself verbally and non-verbally, he's pariticularly expressive about his Puertorriquenisimo. He's spoken about not merely being Puerto Rican, but being Aguadillano. His politics are PR-centered. His charity work is PR-centered. He's represented Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic. His hero is Roberto Clemente.
  4. The same Philly team who couldn't touch Met starting pitching got five runs in six innings against Tim Lincecum. It's a 5-2 lead in the middle of six with Halladay on the mound. Lincecum is throwing 90-91. That can't be good.
  5. Twins beat Pavano and the Yankees running away, 7-3. Oh, gosh. Who can sleep on such a night?
  6. Justin Verlander just went the distance for Detroit. Ninth inning, up 3-1. 1. Billy Butler singles on a line drive to left fielder Ryan Raburn. Offensive Substitution: Pinch runner Jason Bourgeois replaces Billy Butler. 2. Jeff Francoeur grounds out, second baseman Brandon Inge to first baseman Prince Fielder. Jason Bourgeois to 2nd. One out. 3. Mike Moustakas grounds out, second baseman Brandon Inge to first baseman Prince Fielder. Jason Bourgeois to 3rd. Two out. 4. Humberto Quintero singles on a ground ball to right fielder Don Kelly, deflected by first baseman Prince Fielder. Jason Bourgeois scores. Detroit up, 3-2. 5. Mitch Maier walks. Humberto Quintero to 2nd. That's the tying run on second, the winning run on first. Coaching visit to mound. 6. Alcides Escobar hit by pitch. Humberto Quintero to 3rd. Mitch Maier to 2nd. Injury Delay. BASES LOADED! 7.Alex Gordon... The last pitch was clocked by another gun at 101. It was his 131st pitch of the night. After the game they took some measurements and found out that Jim Leyland has the biggest pair of nuts in baseball. God bless you, Jim Leyland.
  7. Two successful bunts from Gee tonight in what was a pretty impressive game, execution-wise.

  11. Oh, you Chipperfatalists, missing the truth under your noses that is Jason Bay.
  12. Smoly Smoke! Dillon Gee, today, you are a man.
  13. Summinagummina, they have a chance to get out of this. Don't be bouncing pitches in there Dillon. Hang on.

  15. McDowell's strategy: "Let him bunt; don't give Tejada anything to hit; if you lose him, we'll go to our lefthander." Downside of that strategy: Bouncing balls to the plate with runners on third has its risks.
  16. Gee coming to the plate. Lovely.
  17. I'm really hoping Gee gets to sniff some seventh inning here. Learn, Terry, learn!

  20. There's no right way to be a fan after all, it's a personal thing. Bad ways to be a fan:

  23. Soupguy wrote: The pinstripes and the road grays without the drop shadows could contend for best uniforms in the league. It really does put them up there with the Cardinals, Dodgers and Giants. And if the pinnies and road grays are the best or near-best in the league, then the blacks are a negation of that, and therefore, an abomination. I'm not a supporter of of the bluetops either, and consider it an accidental gift that the Mets failed to file their homework on time or whatever in order to make them a regular choice this season. For one, we've been down that road 1983-1985-ish. For two, a solid color base speaks of softball, not baseball. For three, it portends a dangerous vulnerability to that uniform creeping into position to become the new standard. For four, again, it's a negation of a wonderful aesthetic ideal.
  24. And just for a reminder, his strike three on Jason Bay the other day:
