  2. Playing first is erstwhile DH Adam Dunn, who doubtlessly is the greatest clout-or-an-out player in history, hitting a staggering .159 with 11 homers two years ago, and then bouncing back to .209 with 41 homers last year. More astounding is his so/bb numbers, leading the league in both last year, with 105 walks, and 222[/bigpurple]strikeouts, which somehow isn't a record, coming up one short of Mark Reynolds 2009 campaign. But mercy, that's a three-true-outcome dude, and some people love that. Segunbase?

  5. Harvey at home. How could Keith be missing this game?
  6. Nice ride from Buck. This guy looks like somebody that righties could eat up. I'd start McEwing against this guy.
  7. Wright's getting a good look at this guy.

  10. I (incredibly) remember that game well. Falcone was the Mets' best hitting pitcher by reputation (though Jackson was no slouch). Torre was specifically asked why Falcone wasn't his pinch-hitter and he said he said he thought about it, but Falcone wasn't done warming up. Now, ask me where the cake knife is in my house and it's another story.
  11. I'm virtually certain (regarding the concussion). Church was a Christian (an appropriately named one) who (for a time, anyhow) gave voice to the Jesus-is-the-only-way-to-salvation perspective. Not exactly an attack on the Semitic race, but certainly a rankling (or worse) comment to some. I think he apologized or something.
  12. Doing some comparisons: Ryan Church gave the Mets 2.0 WAR, worth, according to FanGraphs, $9.3 million, while being paid about $3.4 million. Yay! The Schneid gave us 1.1 WAR, worth $5.9 mills, while collecting $9.8 million. Boo! So, between those twos, the Mets got $15.2 million worth of baseballin' for $13.2. A modest bargain. Nothing to brag about. If you count Churchie's subsequent struggles after being moved to the Braves and Pirates, the trade certainly looks worse. It's a philosophical puzzle whether that should count or Francouer's solid 2009 or terrible 2010 should be included or none of that. Milledge gave the Nats 0.0 WAR over a season and a half (similar tenure to Churchie) and accrued about 0.0 WAR, worth about $0. The Nationals paid about $625,000 in salary for the privilege. He achieved some modest redemption with the (again) Pirates, so following the players of this deal to the end of their contracts, rather than their tenures with the teams involved, would probably make it look close to even. But then the Church-for-Francouer trade would be the real steal for the Mets, though I imagine few of us celebrate that day.
  13. I think of Brian as a pretty secondbasey name. But what do I get? Giles ... Bixler. Not much. It's probably more typical for skinny, fringey white pitchers, though: Bohanon, Bannister, Lawrence, Rose (not so skinny that last one, though).
  14. I know, right?! Let's call those series wins and skip right to the Cards!
  15. He's kind of a "proven closer" by one of the looser definitions of the term. The Braden Looper definition. The only looser definition is the Scott Strickland definition.
  16. We'll need to get Francisco some road test innings first. Would they be interested in an Atchison boomerang?
  17. Swan Swan H wrote: Milledge for Church and Schneider is among the most depressing trades in recent memory. Failed prospect for anti-Semitic head case and sub-mediocre backup catcher. Ugh. Well, sub-mediocre starting catcher. At least for the first half of his sub-mediocre Mets tenure. But we did somehow manage to win that trade.
  18. It's hypnotic. Sometimes I watch it for hours and forget to go to work or eat or use the bathroom
  19. Well, Milledge we did trade. And managed to do it while he still had value, too.
  20. I'm guessing Jay was making a funny.
  21. I'd do that. I'd also go beyond to make sure the cards were printed in direct proportion to the number of days on the roster a particular player had.
  22. Acquired for Steve Ray and Felix Perdomo in a seemingly-rarer-even-then Yankee/Met trade.

  24. Las Vegas, as we know, is a borderline MLB city. Some places are desirable for their own purposes, but not a great match for any particular team. Or maybe a great match for one team --- Las Vegas and Los Angeles, maybe --- that is elsewhere committed. As far as Nieuwie's catch, great job. I wonder sometimes if the five-foot fence, while easier to leap over, sets up the ball player for more injuries as the impact of the player against the wall isn't spread throughout the body like it would be on an 8-10-foot wall, but focused primarily on the edge of the top of the wall against a single spot on the player's torso. Not every day you see a rightfielder positioned to make a leap on a ball getting called off by the centerfielder on a ball heading over the fence.
  25. Plawecki celebrated this thread by going nuts on Saturday. In a 9-2 victory over Hickory (the Dickory Docks?), Kevin went 3-5 with a double, a homer, and four RBI, raising his line to the numbers you see in the post above. I'm not sure what kind of catcher he is, but if it can be measured at all in the performance of his staff, he's gettin' it done. My rainchild Rainy Lara on Saturday: 7.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 6 SO.
