  1. Coulda been a good film. But I found it to be more than a little unaware of the culture in which it was set. The young actors all seem to be over-playing their roles. I think they took advice from fools. Thank goodness High Fidelity came along.
  2. The good news is that, had they gone to extras, it was the Mets All-Star closer who would be left holding the bag.
  3. I doubt it would be so much true at this point, but I went to the first or possibly the second at the Felt Forum in 1993 or 1994. The way they got big shots to appear was to put it on a weeknight adjacent to a weekend that a bunch of big shots would already be in town for the Emmys or something. And there was just something great about being part of an after-work commuter crowd, mostly men, mostly two beers into their evening — enough to be raucous but not rowdy — having the time of their lives before taking the last train home. Strangers bonding over the stupidest shit. Seeing the pros arrive for the red carpet but seeing amateurs Heath Shuler or somebody lost at Penn Station and giving him directions to The Forum. Tons of guys buzzed, but nobody hammered. Weeknight and all. Umpire Steve Palermo won The Most Inspirational Guy of Inspiration or something, and they showed a short (inspirational) film about him trying to rehabilitate himself from serious gunshot wounds, which ended with him stating that, while all athletes who have been hurt can't wait to get back on field and hear the cheers again, he just wanted to hear a few boos, which he identified with being an ump. So the film ends, Palermo is introduced, and the audience jumps to their emotional feet with two seconds of clapping before in unison, booing the crap out of him. Loud, lusty booing. Probably a YOU SUCK! in there. Palermo almost collapses in laughter. A whole night of that sort of irony and crowd culture. Just enough heckling to keep people entertained but nobody got tossed, despite a bunch of WHOSAIDTHAT?!'s and threats from ushers. And a couple of the guys I was with were among the warned. You can put all the glitz and glam on sports, but in the end, its boozy boneheads that fill the seats. And since it was year one or year two, most of the seats were papered, so the hoi polloi owned the night.
  4. A big part of what is going on appears to be many pitchers not adjusting to a digital strike zone.
  5. Yeah, he went to Lakeland High, which is in Shrub Oak, NY. Mets Roster Central just assumed that was in Lakeland, NY, which is up there in Onondaga. But you know what happens when you assume, Keith.
  6. =Gwreck post_id=198382 time=1752752156 user_id=56] The swing off is worse. It isn't a baseball game at that point with the offense and defense involved. The ghost runner of course is still an abomination.

(2025)[/td90][td90]Division I (2025)[/td90][td90]Division I (2025)[/td90][/tr][/table] Peter Kussow was sitting in public speaking class when he got a call from his agent saying that he had been drafted by the Mets. Mets Roster Central is not sure we trust schools that don't make the kids check their cellphones in class. Also, keeping your phone on while somebody is speaking is just douchey. Peyton Prescott has a short mom and a dad who goes for a 1980s side-piping pullover(?!). [FIMG=500]https://www.sebastiandaily.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/peyton-prescott-family-750x375.jpg[/FIMG] He was fortunate enough to pick up former big-leaguer Mickey Brantley as a mentor when he was eight. No word yet if he was named after Peyton Manning, but Mets Roster Central has our suspicions. Nathan Hall's sophomore season ended with internal brace surgery after four starts, but the Mets apparently have a lot of faith in either the man or the procedure. Possibly both. Cam Tilly hasn't really dominated at Auburn like the terror he was in high school, but hey, it's the SEC, and that's hard. What attracts the Mets, though, are spin rates. Spin rates, spin rates, and spin rates. No word yet if Camden Lohman was named after Camden Yards, but we have our suspicions. He has a Tom Seaver profile in that he attracted no notice as an undersized, slop-throwing junior, but came back after a big growth spurt senior year, with a new high-power profile. So like Tom, he was forced to learn to pitch before he found his heat. Anthony Frobose is our designated local boy pick, if you can call living 10 minutes away from Fman "local." But hey, David Wright has an origin story that involves being from a Mets AAA town, so why not? Tyler McLoughlin is a transfer from Emory, so he made Academic All-Conference over and over. He shares a name with a famed fisherman from National Geographic Channel's Wicked Tuna, but again, we have been unable to find any relation. That doesn't mean we are not going to nickname him "Wicked Tuna" if given half a chance. Wyatt Vincent went about 100 picks lower than projected, but he has already called Missouri State to say "Screw college! I'm gonna be a Met!" Truman Pauley has already set several records in the category of "Most Harvard Name Ever." He in fact comes from several generations of Crimsonians, going back at least to his maternal great grandfather, who played on that same Harvard baseball diamond back in 1937-38. Truman is one of two Mets picks that reportedly throw something akin to a gyroball. Frank Camarillo never really put it all together for the UCSB Gauchos, but he killed in the summer collegiate leagues. James Smith IV, by all reports, is not yet the father of a James Smith V, but I promise you, the pressure he is under is enormous. He is one of several two-way players the Mets have picked, but continually seem to telegraph their intent to keep most all of them on the mound. Dude can play center, though. Conner Ware, you will notice, is the only lefty among the Mets draft picks. He never really cracked LSU's rotation, but they WERE the NCAA champs, so being a bullpen contributor on such a squad ain't nothing, and the Mets see something the numbers don't tell. And hey, any SEC lefty has value when you have hit the 15th round. He started his career in Junior College, so it is pretty sweet to go from there to there to a DI national championship. Zack Mack is 6'5" and 240 and named "Zack Mack," so if he isn't closing games by next April he is failing to live up to his purpose in life. He is not to be confused with popular NPR personality "Zach Mack." Sam Robertson is a Mets draft choice out of a juco, but he started his career with Auburn, and transferring from a top national program like that to a community college is ... well, let's just say there must be a story there. Dillon Stiltner went to one of those Christian Schools where you enter at three-years-old Pre-K and spend your entire life in the same institution until senior year of high school. Can you imagine how awesome graduation feels for Dillon Stiltner? Joe Scarborough was a big catching prospect out of high school, but he has apparently moved to the mound, and he is not here for your Mika Brzezinski jokes. Garrett Stratton (no known relation to Rob) is a Jesuit-educated big-brained scholar type who also prospered on the hardwood but apparently stuck to baseball when he reached his junior year. Got that Orel Hershiser look where you know those big ears just made him that much more driven.
  8. I understand, but if you look at as a Susan Seidelman movie that Madonna appears in, instead of as a Madonna vehicle, it may warrant a different level of consideration. You may find, forty years later, her persona is little more than an anachronism, like the Tab in the fridge. [YOUTUBE]wt0_m5mUsbo[/YOUTUBE]

  10. I am telling you, if you get a chance to attend the ESPYs in person, don't miss out.
  11. Fans still vote for the All-Star Game starters.
  12. You can vote for whoever you like but I do not recall an era when All-Stars were selected by writers.
  13. While in the American League, appeared in four All-Star Games, behind starters Xander Bogaerts, Carlos Correa, Manny Machado, and Javier Báez. He may just be a player who prospers in the second halves of seasons. He failed to make the ASG roster the last three years while eventually finishing ninth, ninth, and second in MVP votes. We might do well to base our All Star Game selections on the totality of a player's performance since the previous All-Star Game, not merely on his current half season or less.
  14. Pete hit his homer off an All-Star not a BP pitcher grooving it in. He deserves the MVP. MVP or not, this should not be a lost point. There's a game story reading "Three Homeruns Earn Schwarber MVP." Shwarber was play-acting, and hit three homeruns in a manner not that different from the way Matt Damon went to Mars.
  15. Do the reps have to be guys who were still in the game at the end?
  16. Keep playing, but Strat-o-Matically, with the whole rest of the league available to use. That could be better.
  17. And it is a second home run derby. Pinball would have been better. Magic: The Gathering would have possibly been better.
  18. Johnny Lunchbucket wrote: Will they do the stupid Xtra inning rules I imagine they have something stupider in store. Possibly a standing-for-the-National Anthem contest.
  19. Did Diaz get his entrance tune?
  20. Sugar is going to be behind one hell of an eight ball when he enters this game.
  21. That was certainly Jared Porter.
  22. I don't see a signing as a no-brainer. I see it as a maybe.
  23. I believe that Alonso joins David Wright and Lee Mazzilli as the only Mets to go deep in an All-Star Game.
  24. Forty years old and hasn't appeared in a game since 2024. It may be a no-brainer to look, but the decision on whether or not buy will require brain thinking. Scouting. Cost-benefit analysis.

It was just a grey and featureless one. But now he is back with a more representative grill, here to let you know that he is still doing pretty poorly for the Athletics in A-ball. Also, Andinson is from the Dominican town of Monseñor Nouel, which was probably named after a cleric, but kind of literally translates to "My Lord Christmas," which is kind of cool. Also, he flew around the bases to score a big run against Milwaukee. Rico Garcia gave the Mets some fine low-leverage innings. Grant Hartwig seemingly pitched OK in AAA this year. His 3.42 ERA certainly suggests that he should have gotten a call. Then you read a little further down his line and you see that he may have given up only nine earned runs in 22 and 2/3 innings, but he also gave up 13 unearned runs, and you start to suspect there's a story there. We are nonetheless guessing that he is there because he was working out in St. Lucie and the St. Lucie Mets were on the road, and he had to get some live work in during the All-Star Break.
