  1. Small drama starting to inflate over Ryan Zimmerman and his yips. He has had his right shoulder examined by doctors. He has learned the results of an MRI test, which revealed no structural damage to the shoulder, only inflammation. He appeared in Sundays game, only as a pinch-hitter, and like the rest of his teammates enjoyed an off-day Monday. All of which has only delayed the inevitable question that will arise later today, before the Nationals arrive at the ballpark to open a three-game series against the Marlins: Now what? Zimmerman isnt being placed on the disabled list. At least, the Nats have given no indication to this point he will. But neither have they said hes good to go. Would they really just place him back at third base tonight, as though none of this ever happened? There doesnt appear to be a right answer to this dilemma. And make no mistake, its a real dilemma, with both short-term and long-term implications. Under contract through 2019.
  2. He always thought about the weight his words carried and how it affected his teammates and his organization. That happened long before, with his teammates and his organization. So when youre think about something thats is the signature of Derek, its the substance. Buck Showalter talking partial nonsense about Jeter, and his copyeditors doing the rest.
  3. As far as I'm concerned, he's welcome to a 10-year honeymoon. He could have done better in his managerial choice. But he could have done far worse.
  4. Erin Arvelund!
  5. G-Fafif wrote: I believe it was Charlie Lea with the five-inning deal. David Palmer, it turns out. I was thinking of him, but I couldn't not conflate him with Len Barker. On April 21, 1984, Palmer made an unusual kind of baseball history when he threw a five-inning perfect game in the second game of a doubleheader at Busch Stadium against the St. Louis Cardinals. Officials called the game on account of rain, and major-league baseball officials later struck the game from baseball's official list of perfect games since it only lasted five innings April 21, 1984. And four days later against the Mets, he didn't go the first four in order, as I remembered, but got through 3 1/3. The 1984 Mets won anyhow, of course.
  6. ... the Orioles dugout would really smell bad.
  7. They're all plunkos in the scorebook.
  8. The Gnats swept a double hitter from Augusta today. L.J. Mazzilli drove in the winning run in game one with a bases-loaded walk, which is SUCH a Mazzilli thing to do.
  9. Who was the guy who threw a rain-shortened five-inning perfect game for Montreal? He knew it looked kind of bogus even though it counted, so he went out and threw four more perfect innings against the Mets in his next outing. Years later, the rules changed, and his perfecto got tossed.
  10. You think if it looks like a tie, the home office is supposed to defer to the runner (as is traditional), or the ump on the field (like a court of appeals deferring to the lower court in the absence of clear evidence demanding an overturn)? I wonder what their guidance is at the home office. It would be kind of cool if it wasn't the latter. Or even if the guy making the final call doesn't even necessarily know what the original call was?
  11. YOUR New York Mets battle the power-packing Atlanta Braves for THIRD PLACE as young flame-thrower Zack Wheeler takes on grumpy ignored free agent Ervin Santana.
  12. How about all that "he wouldn't disgrace himself --- not like Willie Mays" garbage?
  13. Thank you, ballpark. Thank you, Valdy.
  14. Oh, joy, the tomahawk chop.
  15. Because when you have chance to pitch a Kyle Farnsworth, you pitch him.
  16. Tejada is the gas.
  17. i see some absolute shit challenges coming in the near future from managers who just took the lead and want to buy time for the closer to warm up That's probably a big part of why challenges late in the game are at the umps' discretion. Nice to get five pitchers into the Braves' pen in game one.
  18. Actually IS good. Tie went to the runner. Laggy gets an infield hit chasing a pitch out of the strike zone. Our ol' friend Pedro Beato coming in.
  19. I get the idea that having replay as a recourse is going to cut managerial ejections by like 80%.
  20. Two fastballs inside to Heyward. And he rolls it over. Colon has manly courage.
  21. I was only seven. What's weird is the reverence we had gleaned regarding him and Mays. Like we only spoke their names in respectful hushed tones. I remember when I was at Eric Gladstone's in 1975 cracking open a pack or two of baseball cards and getting a "Brewers: Hank Aaron, Des. Hitter" card. It was like striking gold, and our jaws just dropped. We had a general understanding that he was still active, and we sensed that DHing for the Brewers was somehow a small fall from grace. But still, it was just shocking to us that an image of such a god could be on the same cardboard and come from the same package as a Fred Beene or a Carmen Fanzone. We ran into his father's office and showed him, insisting he realize the gravity of our discovery. "HANK AARON, DAD!"
  22. A B+ is nothing to sneeze at. It may well get him into the top three GMs in the history of the team if he disappeared tomorrow.
  23. Hey, scored off the bullpen!
  24. d'Arnaud gets his average up to .111, Cologne actually puts a ball in play, and we get a second run before getting into the Braves pen. Nicely done.
  25. d'Arnaud has arrived in 2014.
