I've got a new theory on jersey retirement. Rather than sweat whether Carter's 8 or Hernandez's 17 gets retired for their excellence and or character, why not press for the unceremonious retirement of Ambiorix Burgos' 48, so no player again be linked to his ignominy, and his legacy never again hinted at by the appearance of a Mets uniform.

Hello they must be going - Retirements in 2015
Edgy MD replied to Frayed Knot's topic in New York Mets Talk
Dunn, Konerko, and Soriano make it three 400+ HR guys retiring in the same off-season. Bet that's a first. I think I'll take that bet. But... I won't take it when Giambi jumps on board the bye-bye bandwagon and makes it four. Damn, nobody laying their money down. Finishing Up in 2012 Jim Thome: 612 HR Chipper Jones: 468 HR His brother Andruw: 434 HR Bam, Jason Giambi turns in his cleats, about five years later than expected. 440 homers. Retires as the active walk leader, a mantle that now falls to A-Rod. -
I'd say the charges in court are ultimately more meaningful than the Twins Hall of Fame induction.

Who am I and the Creation of Butterball Field
Edgy MD replied to batmagadanleadoff's topic in New York Mets Talk
Good call. Jerry Morales. Man, by the time he was backing up Mazzilli, he looked about 54. His Topps Card shows him in 17, but 17 went unissued for the 1980 Mets. Oldest-looking Mets center fielder since Duke Snider: -

Yeah, I'm just throwing that out there. I had little doubt that given enough time, CY was going to turn a corner, but the Mets had given him as much time as they could spare. I got the idea that EY, on the other hand, was playing closer to his peak potential, but still wasn't very good.

It's a living-under-a-cloud-of-spousal-assault-charges house. Those charges may or or may not hold up, but man, I'd lay off throwing my teammates under buses for a while.

Frayed Knot wrote: batmagadanleadoff wrote: I get what you mean about the slippery slope up there in The Bronx over retiring uniform numbers, but Pettitte's probably not the poster boy for any of that. He'll deservedly get Hall of Fame votes and if his Yankee career was instead, as a Met, he'd be the franchise's second best pitcher all-time (career, not peak). Pettitte isn't the poster boy for the slippery slope, Guidry was. Once they retired his number they took any prospect of even having a debate about Pettitte totally off the table. I'd say Roger Maris and Billy Martin muddied that slope more than Guidry ever did.

WAR is not the answer, but it definitely suggests that Eric Young outplayed Chris Young in 2014. YoungSeasonsWAR-blood, Joel197719829.3 Chris R.201120122.0Eric201320141.7Anthony199119930.1Chris B.20140.0 On the other hand, it surprisingly suggests that Eric 2014 (0.9 WAR) was better than Eric 2013 (0.8 WAR), and I can't explain why (other than to guess that hit has something to do with offense going down league-wide). That's baseball-reference.com's version above, but Fangraphs sort of agrees, putting it at: Eric Young 2014: 1.2 WAR Eric Young 2013: 0.7 WAR Chris Young 2014: -0.6 WAR

In any event, I don't see him making it to the majors this year, and he may be passed by Rosario at some point. Maybe someone should explain to this "writer" how stupid it is to stick a 'Bust' label on a 20 y/o player just two years after his draft out of high school. Or at least force him to explain his scouting bonafides up front. I think someone should explain to the readers how silly it is to pay for exclusive content that can't even make up a clever derisive nickname.

#1 among the Mets 2012 draft picks and #29 or so in your hears is Gavin Cecchini, whose brother Garin has already splash landed with the Red Sox to the tune of an .813 OPS in 36 plate appearances. Ours is more grim and focused. He respects THE GAME! Will Gavin out-debut his brother? Will he debut this season at all?! Will he debut EVER at all?! ALL THIS IS UNKNOWN! But not unknowable. Forecast Gavin's 2015.

He told stories of picking up the 2000 World Series through online feeds while shooting Lord of the Rings in New Zealand.

Only stolen base champ not named Reyes in Mets history. Course, we need to count his Colorado steals in order to award him the crown. He seemed major league in every way put the production. Counted himself as a Mets fan and a son of Jersey, at least lip service-wise.

Which beats him getting all those at bats and providing a steady diet of nothing.

A non-roster invitee in on a minor league contract, Alex Castellanos is the great hope for all Mets fan clubs ensconced within Cubano societies and expatriate Cubano societies ensconced within Mets fan clubs. A 28 year old with a coupla cuppas with the Dodgers behind him, his biggest claim to fame so far is being traded for Rafael Furcal. Signed the day after Michael Cuddyer. Like Cuddy, he brings some versatility to the table, with experience at second and third. But will he make it to the table at all? That's for you to decide. What do you predict Alex Castellanos will provide for the Mets in 2015?

Well, if you don't like Carillo, they have Monell and Plawecki too. The good news is that good teams tend to lose guys on waiver claims and Rule V drafts. Other good news is that Centeno is stuck behind two other veteran catchers in Milwaukee, so there's every chance he'll have to pass through waivers again. Bad news is that the Mets are great. So they'll be among the last teams with a chance to (re-)claim him. Other good news, though: being great total has a world of upside.
-
Well, he's real and stuff. Drafted in 2011 in round 14 out of ASU (his forth time drafted!) and declared a steal by Baseball America (which still exists!), Xorge was immediately noticeable because of his X-ilicious name. Hits for a decent average but has been rather punchless for a catcher, despite a solid build (220 lbs.). He started slow as a pro but has rallied the last two years, improving steadily on offense and defense.

Something wistful when the last big-league-level free agent gets signed away in the offseason. It's like the books at least the emotional once have finally closed on the previous season. Bring your scoops and greatest hits of the beaters. Kristie Ackert isn't really a scooper, but somebody who's good at taking a little bit different angle at the story everybody is plowing ahead with. I associate her with "Puerto Rican Mets actually liked Tony Bernazard" Not a big moment, but a good one. How about Mike Puma?

Here's hoping he can sting the Nats first and more frequently. It's a rare left fielder you see who plays deeper than the center fielder. I get the idea that his legs'll stay healthy and he'll be a rare speed-first guy who plays well into his thirties Tony Womack, Lonnie Smith, Juan Pierre... Mookie Wilson.

If d'Arnaud can't g'aud, and Recker has been hit by a double decker... and Plawecki is feeling blechy, and Monell has had a spell... then the Mets staff will be safe in the able hands of Xorge Carillo, the X-iest Met property since Xavier Nady. If that doesn't happen, then... good. Because I like Recker. [fimg=350:10e7fkz2]https://pbs.twimg.com/profile_images/494670132263006208/lKxDipnG_400x400.jpeg[/fimg:10e7fkz2] [fimg=350:10e7fkz2]http://metsmerizedonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/xorge-carrillo-500x275.jpg[/fimg:10e7fkz2] Xorge has a lot of hobbies, but screwing around is not one of them, and he put up a .701 OPS in Bingo. Not bad for a catcher. What do you think he'll give the Mets this year?

The last of the Mets' big league free agents gets a minor league deal. Signed away by Atlanta. [fimg=400:2wwhygdm]http://www.bloggingmets.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/Eric-Young.jpg[/fimg:2wwhygdm]
