  1. Laggy walks. Flores hits him over. Nieuwy drives him home. What a wonderful world.
  2. Why would we assume Murphy to be a Biblical literalist?
  3. There's a Billy Bean issue? Great, Mets, you've created a Billy Bean issue.
  4. Speaking of costumes, we might go a long way toward tolerance if we explicitly pulled the plug on hetero-establishment enforcement traditions like rookie hazing costumes and bullpen pink backpack guy.

  6. Tim Rohan owes his career to a Horatio Alger-esque break. He came to work for the Times as an intern fresh out of school. He got menial copy editor stuff, and wire rewrites, but he begged the sports editor Jay Schrieber for an assignment. It's summer, so you can't just send the kid off to cover high school sports. So, one Friday night, the Mets beat was uncovered, and Schrieber threw the kid a bone. I mean... the Mets. Who cares, right? What's the big deal? Give it to the kid. That Friday night was June 1, 2012, with the Cardinals in town and Johan Santana on the hill. As Johan ground out the last two innings, there was as much pressure on the Rohan as there was on Santana. The Times could have dispatched a seasoned guy after the seventh inning or asked one of the wire writers to do their write-up, but Rohan brought the story home. Nice first assignment, kid.
  7. I don't think he's publicly thumbing his nose about anything. I mean, I think he said in his own way that he supported the Mets effort and he welcomed Bean's visit.
  8. I can see a lot of things. I have an active imagination (or so my wife tells me). But what I can see and where I'll put my money are two different things.
  9. The problem is the title of this thread. I just can't read it without music pounding in my skull. Hey kids, there's something in the weather Murphy likes the gay guys He's just not sure 'bout the leather He's painting himself in a corner, now So stick around He's gonna be a lightning rod Here on shifting ground Say, Gary and Ronnie, have you broadcast yet? When, O when will Keith come out? Muh-muh-muh-Murphy and the Gays Oh but they're weird and they're wonderful Oh Billy, he's the other Bean Is Rusty one? Or Piazza, son?! You know I say him with a burly ma-REEEEN, oh, oh.. Murphy and the Gays Yeah, I agree that this should fade. I mean, Francessa's still on the air, and he hates fatherhood. Unless he's compelled to issue clarification after clarification, which I imagine his agent and the Mets publicist will discourage. People need someone to point at and to bear the sins of the world, and maybe it'll be him for a few days, but they'll move on.
  10. I'm hot right now. Monday, I called the governor of Georgia, and the scheduled execution of Kelly Gissendaner was postponed. Yesterday, I wrote and tweeted Bill Price, and he spiked the nasty parts of his column. I rarely have this sort of effect, so if I can straighten out something for anybody, help you with a uncomfortable confrontation, now's the chance to ask me.
  11. Yeah, I'm in camp and on the roster despite not having played above Savannah. Why's that? Dumb question. I'm glad you asked. The Mets are inviting me to camp and putting me on the roster because I tortured the South Atlantic league to the tune of a 0.63 ERA. No drib-drab sample size either. That was done over 41 appearances comprising 57 innings. You want good. I give you Eckersley-in-1990 good. Except I don't have his control. I walk people. But you can do that, you know, when you hold opponents to a .111 batting average. That's what I do. But so what? That's flash-in-the-pan stuff, right? Yeah, shut up. I pulled the same trick the year before in Brooklyn. Forty-five innings and 1.00 ERA. Wanna know where you sign up for that? Right here, babies. Yeah, the South Atlantic League is four stops short of the end of the line on the MLB subway. You're right about that. But if you're so darn right about everything, how about telling me what I'm going to accomplish this season?
  12. Dilson turns old-enough-to-party today.
  13. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: I got two tickets for Paradise! Will you pack my bats we'll leave tonight! Under flashing neon casino lights! I'm a backup catcher in Paradise! Your move, Recker.
  14. I think the Syndergaarbage story may yet qualify as Marc Carig's big scoop.
  15. I'm Rafael Montero. Yeah, you know me. Late-blooming control specialist who exhibited little of that trademark control during my initial call-up. Last year, I got leapfrogged by deGrom, which was dirty pool. Now, folks are rooting for other potential leapfroggers with names like Syndergaard and Matz, and maybe others. Not me. I'm rooting for ME! Bullpen or rotation, I intend to deliver the goods. [fimg=500]https://thenypost.files.wordpress.com/2014/05/montero.jpg[/fimg] Rafael. The name is Hebrew. It means "God has healed." F'reals. I think I'm gonna heal a lot this year. What do you think?
  16. Three games, two starts, 1-8 with a double and a walk. I imagine he gets the call if Dreamy goes down, but Plawecki gets the call if d'Arnaud goes down.
  17. Leathersich rummaging through garbage to recover food as we speak.
  18. Mets camp bursting with three of the top ten guys in all of minor league ball in terms of strikeouts per nine. The tenth guy is an adult playing unaffiliated ball, but I left him in there. Every dog deserves his day and all. I can only speculate. The next Met on this list would be #21, Beck Wheeler, who struck out 13.7 dudes/9 in the Florida State League over 41 innings.
  19. (deleted stuff) Wait, isn't this a McKnight thread?
  20. batmagadanleadoff wrote: Edgy MD wrote: Mark Johnson. There's one five between Mark n Dave. Still, that's impressive ... remembering Johnson as #5. What was he a Met for, like 15 minutes? Okay, I exaggerate., but MJ's stint couldn't have been more than a few months. Parts of three seasons, but definitely an ephemeral tenure. Big, broadshouldered first basemen who wear little infielder numbers like five stand out in my mind. Like Mike Marshall in six, or Marv Throneberry in 2, or even Babe Ruth in three. It's like a chip on their shoulder. "Go ahead. Make fun of my little baby number. I'll crush you." Marshall starred in the MoFo Picnic game (wearing 20 at the time), playing like three positions on a day the Mets did their best to bench as many regulars as they could, and ultimately robbing a home run. That was the game that began the 2001 turnaround.
  21. GAH! Close. Peeked.
  22. Mark Johnson.
  23. Great profile of the career of Vladdy Guerrero, taken from Up, Up, & Away: The Kid, The Hawk, Rock, Vladi, Pedro, Le Grand Orange, Youppi!, The Crazy Business of Baseball, and the Ill-fated but Unforgettable Montreal Expos, and excerpted at Deadspin.
  24. Billy Bean in camp to work out with and school the Mets. Also in camp but neither working out nor actively schooling the Mets are the families of assassinated NYPD Officers Ramos and Liu. Intrasquad Game Day Today. Will Geren's Herons beat Teufel's Truffles?
  25. Curt Schilling tweets about his daughter, gets sexually explicit responses, and the gloves come off. Not sure Daily News is helping the matter by including a selfie shot taken by said daughter. But, well, at least they didn't give the article to Bill Price. He said hes aware of nine trolls who lost their jobs or got kicked off athletic teams and were not done.
