It's angle of encroachment man. We have an incredible intuitive sense of mechanics. Athletes much more so. And that last micro-second, when the ball is heading into your hands, they channel all forward momentum into their shoulders and hips and elbows, so the hands themselves can switch to backward momentum, and the hands are curling into the body at the same time. So what just missed being a 180-degree, head-on, speed-against-speed, bone-shattering nightmare, turns into a 25-degrees overtaking deflection.... that still hurts like the Devil.

Infield practice for deGrom!!

All the more reason to bring up two offensive players. If Cuddy can't go, we're talking about a three-man bench.

Wright was running 3-2, with presumably the expectation that Duda would be protecting the strike zone and therefore protecting him. When Duda took a hittable slider, Wright was suddenly on his own, and Duda's take job and Galvis' late coverage put all sorts of weird improvisations into Wright's slide as he attempted to get into that base. Still, I thought he hurt an ankle or knee or something. A hammy is usually a running injury, not a sliding one.

Unsettling how this game featured troubling injuries, unsound managerial decisions, bean balling, a returning ace celebrated as a savior but coming up all too human, and an inability to decisively put away what appears to be the weakest team in the decision, and it was one of the most entertaining games in years.

Holding news on any Wright-related news for a 4:00 PM press conference, although I'm sure (1) it'll leak before then, and (2) we all have a pretty good idea of how that transaction will look. Meantime, we can report that the Mets are getting ready for a 10-man bullpen. Appropriate, as Murphy was one of three Mets who made a visit and took batting practice to test the dimensions at the end of 2008. One of the other two is atop this list. The other is sitting on 10 career homers (including two for the Mets at New Shea) and currently toiling for the Reno Aces.

I guess another option, if Cuddyer is OK to play, is to use him at third and go with a Nieuwenberry platoon in left.

Mets 6, Phillies, 5 Orioles 4, Yankees 3, with the Yankees sliding deeper into last. Red Sox 8, Nats 7, with the Nats sliding into a tie for last. No transaction yet, but Campbell has been sent for. I don't think Hererra gets called up unless he's hitting, and unless Murphy disappears. Muno or Reynolds for any potential slot two.

Nothing freaky about running through four bench players in a tight, back-and-forth game. It happens all the time, whether due to injures, pinch-hitting, double switches, defensive replacements, or ejections. What's in many ways more compelling than the potential of running out of players is what happened earlier, getting caught in a mis-match, such as when Nieuwenhuis is forced to face a lefty with men in scoring position.

But what an ass, amirite?

... and you just found out your captain has a pulled hammy. (We don't know this [do we?], but it's a thought experiment). Wright's heading to the DL. What's your other move? Who do you call up, and who do you start? Do you call up somebody and put him at third? Do you call up somebody and put him at second and move Murphy to third? Do you call up somebody to be a reserve, start Tejada at second, and move Murphy? Do you even consider moving Flores? Current infielders available: Eric Campbell, currently on the roster with a 1.661 OPS in 23 plate appearances for Las Vegas: 1 game at 3b, 2 games at 1b, 2 games at lf. [*]Alex Castellanos, currently not on the roster with a 1.140 OPS in 19 plate appearances for Las Vegas: 1 game at 3b, 1 in rf. [*]Wilfredo Tovar, currently on the roster with an .800 OPS in 5 plate appearances for Las Vegas: 1 game at 3b. [*]Matt Reynolds, currently not on the roster with a .550 OPS in 24 plate appearances for Las Vegas: 5 games at ss. [*]Daniel Muno, currently not on the roster with a .490 OPS in 13 plate appearances for Las Vegas: 2 games at 3b, 1 g at 2b. [*]Dilson Hererra, currently on the roster with a .451 OPS in 19 plate appearances for Las Vegas: 4 game at 2b. [*]Dustin Lawley, currently not on the roster with a .970 OPS in 12 plate appearances for Binghamton: 3 games at 3b. Lotsa viable options, but Campbell's got to have an edge one way or another. Wouldn't be surprised to see them call up two guys and send Goeddel down.

It also reminded me of the days of McCarver in the booth, because the broadcasters seemed two steps ahead of both managers.

Wow, that was one pumped up Familia. Good game by Utley, but GREAT game by Recker.

Dang, Familia. You make Francouer chase in that situation. Everybody knows that.

I'll say this. That's one good-lookin' third baseman.

I think right now the best defense is a d'Arnaud three-run homer. Bah...

My money is on d'Arnaud. (And on the end of the four-man bench.)

Bad day for the Norfolk crew. Looking forward to what our defensive alignment will be. d'Arnaud to third?

I don't like seeing guys get rung up when they twist around in self preservation like that.
