I think the "snakebit" and "soft" and "fragile" tags are cruel things to hang around a guy's neck. It's usually more about random distribution.

With the two best outfielders hurt, the third- and fourth-best traded, the Mets are down to the fifth, sixth, and (nominally) the seventh. Aoki showed me close to nothing out there today, though.

Brian McCann:

Why is our catcher receiving the ball seven feet in front of the plate?

Rosey ain't diving today, either.

But no. Houstown gets out of it with just one Mets run.

Houston pen and defense working for the Mets this inning.

Springy looks like shit this inning.

Rosario has some head-in-butt activity going.

Way to quit there, Springer.

How enormous is that guy behind Gelbs? He's a wall!

Aoki quit on that early, I think. I wouldn't be surprised if it was a couple of innings before the Mets have their heads remotely in the game.

Yeah, I want to hear a good word come out of that clubhouse. That ball drove up into his nose.

Fisher lives up to his name, fishing after strike three.

What did Gary say?

We got one of those leadoff hitters I've heard folks tell about. How about giving a glove to Flores and DH'ing Cabrera?

Welcome to our first-ever Met from Hyuga, Miyazaki Prefecture, Japan. And a special welcome to the 63,000 Hyugans who are now jumping on board the Mets bandwagon. Houston gave Aoki the Ed Lynch treatment this year, trading him away shortly after the start of their year of triumph, so hopefully he plays angry tonight. Pretty funny that Keith is talking about what he can't say on the air, and Gary counters with, "You see Roark pitch last night?"

You know, Taijeron was a productive hitter for three seasons in AAA without tasting the bigs, but the Mets kept him down, thinking his contact rates and chase rates and defensive acuity suggested that he would not translate into a big league hitter. Who was the Mets staffer who championed that opinion? Put that person in charge.

A good chance we'll see three new Mets make their debuts today.

Marwin Gonzalez (second inning, 14th overall batter) had a swing and miss (83.8 mph curveball).
