COCAINE IS FOR CLOSERS!

Thank you, San Diego Ballpark Architect.

The second Kazhisa in big league history.

Well, he can score on that.

I send Lagares on contact. He'd probably be out there, but he'd force a throw and tag (and look at Asuaje throwing under pressure). If he's out. Lóbaton displaces him on first. On the other hand, as LWFS notes above, Lagares should have tried to score on the bunt, too. Come on, Sherlock.

Lóbaton just hit a giftwrapped DP ball, and it got through because they were stupishifting on him. BREAK!

How cool to see Kevin Mitchell in the park while they're talking about barehanded catches.

Great job pitching out of a jam, but he needs more support guyz.

"Who holds the Padres single-season record for homeruns as a catcher?" I was going to guess Terry Kennedy, but Gary says no. I'm guessing Mike Piazza.

Just tuning in. Have the Padres really gone back to these colors?

Now he just needs to get over.

“He was such a good human being, it didn’t matter if he never got any hits, any runs scored, any RBIs,” said Ron Darling, who called Staub his guardian angel for the way he took care of young players like Darling, who made his major- league debut in 1983 during Staub’s second stint with the Mets. “All that was in his heart was to do good, to help people less fortunate and I think he’s a beacon for ballplayers today . . . [As players] we have such an opportunity to do good works. Some do, some don’t, and Rusty did it the best.” Good writeup by Laura Albanese.

I tend to wonder if they kept the right rookie from last year. Maybe they should have gone with Smitty and sent Rosey back for more seasoning.

Just hit, Baby.

First place was a fun ride, but a 3-4 week coupled with a run of hot play by Augusta has dropped our Fireflies into a tie for third. But four teams sit within 2 1/2 games of each other, so expect that to change this weekend. Don't like it? Well, be glad you're not a fan of the Boston-affiliated Greenville Drive, current losers of 13 in a row, sitting 11 1/2 games out in the South Atlantic League's South Division. The reign atop the leader board for firstbasemen Jeremy Vasquez is getting stupid. Upping his OPS to 1.074 since our last update, the young Firefly is third in the league in batting average and second in on-base percentage. I don't remember him lighting up preseason top prospect lists, but let's watch and see if he turns any heads for mid-season lists. He has now reached base in 20 straight games, easily a franchise record. Olerudian. There haven't been a lot of transactions, but catcher Jay Jabs got demoted to the idle Brooklyn roster with the activation of starting pitcher Marcel Renteria this week. Jabs is repeating Columbia as he transitions from the outfield to catcher, but it's probably not a good sign that an organization that has lost their two major league catchers can't find a placement for him. Joe Cavallaro is starting to get some momentum in the rotation, going 2-0 through three starts with a 1.89 ERA and 19 strikeouts. If you've got him starting and Carlos Hernandez (0.87 through 10 1/3 innings ... with a 17/2 strikeout walk ration!), it's a good day to bet on a Firefly victory. But perhaps the guy you really want to keep your eye on Chris Viall. Viall is freaking 6'9", and while he has the inconsistent mechanics associated with lanky dudes, he's blowing folks away with 29 strikeouts through 14 1/3 innings. He was brilliant in his start this week, but took the loss. This has been FIREFLY THEATRE! "The harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph." — Thomas Paine

Can I get a huzzah for Brandon Nimmo the Table Setter?

"The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good Mets to do nothing." — Edmund Burke

One thing that would help is if somebody reversed this trend of the best pitchers pitching fewer and fewer innings. Certainly no pitcher could otherwise approach Seaver's legacy.

Matz seems to do fine, but once adversity hits, starts beating himself. Falls behind batters with runners on base.
