I'd hate for the rules to box in teams -- and their fans -- those 2 or 3 times a year when you bring in a guy who just doesn't have it that day. For example, you're up by one, the reliever throws 8 straight balls, but instead of going to the pen like you should if you were trying to win, you've got to purposefully let the ineffective guy pitch to a 3rd batter. Yup. Or fake an injury (count on it). Yup. Would potentially upset the balance between O&D by taking away one of the biggest "surprises" a D can provide while not also limiting the "matchup" advantage the offense can muster. Seems sketchy and dumb to me Dixie Cup.

Yup. They're attempting to solve problems when they aren't even sure what the problem is. They don't realize they're probably making more problems.

I'd rather that trend be responded to by one team zagging while everybody else was zigging. Twenty-five is plenty. Twenty-six will be more of a license for increase reliever use and increased specialization. I'd rather see roster sizes be trimmed to about 16.

https://cdn.newsday.com/polopoly_fs/1.27596978.1550789958!/httpImage/image.jpg_gen/derivatives/display_960/image.jpg> First of all, sweet photo, right? It looks like Rockwell did me in oil. Wait, that didn't sound right. I'm Chuck Hernandez. And listen. If there's been any method to the Mets this offseason, it's been redundancy. Jeff McNeil seemingly established himself at second base and they go and recruit to secondbasemen to bump ahead of him on the depth chart, and a few more to sit behind him. That's in addition to a whole bunch of infielders they seemingly had at the top off the system pushing to get a shot, or another shot. You like Lagares, but worry that he's too many years and too many injuries into his career to build on his strong start in 2018, and finally become an offensive asset? The Mets went out and got another, younger Juan Lagares. So when it came time to get a bullpen coach, did they just stick with Ricky Bones? The longest-tenured Mets coach? The dean of the coaching staff? No, they did not. Did they go and call up an organizational guy, a friendly face that has been around and not distinguished himself but not offended? They did not do that either. They wanted more than a phone answerer. They wanted some reduncancy here as well. And that's why they got me, Chuck F. Hernandez. I may be the bullpen coach, but I've got thirteen seasons under my elastic-waisted pants as a big-league pitching coach, plus a few more in the minors, a few as a front-office pitching advisor, and a few as (yes) a bullpen coach. Braves, Marlins, Rays (hah!), Tigers, Angels. So not all the professional pitching observations and advising will necessary be coming through Dave "Monster" Eiland. Between him, Mickey Callaway and myself, we have a lot of pitching coaches to go around. If you're dropping your arm, Jesus, you're going to hear it from everybody. Eiland is still in charge, of course. I'm not saying I'm going step on his toes. Any stepping out of my lane will have to go through him. I'm just saying, if Dave wants to take off a series or two to scout Syracuse and or Binghamton, if he needs to go to his kid's college graduation, I've got him covered. I don't mean to brag, but I seriously know how to walk slowly from the dugout to the mound with my hands in my back pockets, feeling my ass like a pitching coach is wont to do. I'd say I have as much experience in that department as anybody. And speaking of experience, I have a lot of that in my pen. I've got two All-Star closers, I've got two guys who'd rather be starting to set them up, and a whole bunch of nascent talent to establish out there. Can I be a part of it? Well, I just used the word "nascent," so I'm probably pretty smart. But that's the game: Act as the extra pitching coach without appearing to be the extra-pitching coach. How's that going to swing for me in 2019?

Maybe, but it didn't stop them from making him their spokesmodel.

Oh, I think there's a damn good chance he will. Two infielders are hurt, and at least one has moved from questionable to doubtful for Opening Day. That might be two by the end of the day. And the one who is already doubtful was their backup shortstop, so there's a likelihood that one of him, Danny Espinosa, or Luis Guillorme comes back to Flushing. They have room on the roster to add somebody and they'll have more once they IL Drew Smith and Yoenis Céspedes, so I think they're taking a long, hard look at him.

https://pbs.twimg.com/profile_images/983511478262169600/aKYjKvVg_400x400.jpg> Hey, peeps. I'm Adeiny Hechavarria. A shortstop known for his defense, without a whole lot of offense to show for his sun's-out/guns-out muscle above. But I was good enough, you know? Seven years in the game building my rep, and I go and have the ill fortune to be a free agent in a year when nobody was signing nobody. All I wanted was a job. A chance to do my thing. But the best I could do was a minor league deal with the Mets. That's a fine howdy fuck. But you know, I'll sneak up on you. Camp started, and I wasn't there. And then camp rumbled on ... and suddenly I was there! When did I appear? Where did I come from?! I don't know! I'm Adeiny Hechavarria. You think I'm kidding? Ask José Reyes. Seven years ago, he was the Miami shortstop. Big money, long term. But the next year ... I was doing it. I took that smiley self-promoting Dominican hot shot's job, and that's all there was to it. I'm sneaky. I'm Adeiny Hech. You think, "Well, that's just the way things break. Somebody loses a job, somebody gets a job." You may think that, but ask yourself this: I'm in a position to be the Mets' backup shortstop this year. WHOSE job was that last year? I'll pause a minute while your mind is blown. . . . . . . .. . . . But wait ... there's more. Two years ago in Mets' camp, Luis Guillorme caught my bat. That fat gummy bear made his whole rep on that. Well, this camp, I'm catching his AT-bats. I'm catching his opportunity, too. SNEAKY. It's my whole thing. I've wanted to be a major leaguer since I was a kid. But you know, the Cubans watch us. They watch us like hawks, and they watch the straits of Florida to make sure no Cuban boaters decide to turn their crafts north. So I sailed away ... to Mexico! I'M A SNEAK LIKE THAT! You're saying, "Adeiny, yeah, you're good with the glove. That's true of a lot of shortstops. And even if it's been more true of you, that was then and this is now. You've got some miles on your wheels. And you're on a minor league deal. And God dammit, Adeiny, you've got a career .290 on-base percentage." I know you're saying that because I got spies. You think you know how this year is going to go for me? Do you? Think again. Think again while I DOUBLE blow your mind. I debuted in August of 2012. With Toronto. How did that debut come to pass, you ask? How did that roster spot open up? You won't guess. In a million years you won't, and that's why I'm just going to come right out and tell you. I got that opportunity because https://web.archive.org/web/20120806172823/http://thestar.blogs.com/baseball/2012/08/as-beat-blue-jays-in-15-innings-to-extend-winless-streak-to-six-games-griffin-.htmlBrett Lawrie got himself hurt. And now suddenly Jed Lowrie is hurt. Coincidence? Yeah, you keep telling yourself that. Are those guys even two different people? Are they? BOOM! NOW you can tell me how I'm going to do in 2019. I've got some sneaking to do.

Edgy MD wrote: The vacillating between the Mets don't even try and the Mets are stupid for trying is dizzying. Except that neither of those is the point of the article. The point is that they tried insufficently hard. That's a fair criticism and isn't anywhere near the vacillating you suggest. No, the point is that "The Mets Picked A Bad Year To Try To Win The NL East." The thesis is right there in the title. And then, the subhead is "But at least they're trying" which puts them in damned if you do and damned if you don't territory. The article is rife with distortion and opinion stated as fact, and decidedly short on data analysis, which is supposed to be 538's stock in trade.

Matt Pobereyko was a 2017 AFL'er for the Mets. He's never had an objectively bad season, but now he's been released by two teams. Maybe it's a personality thing. Or maybe the new regime doesn't put as much stock in indy ball refugees as the old one did. Save by Avilan and your final is 2-1, Mets.

Oh, I agree. I like the thigh number, but the overall effect of that White Sox uniform is awful. The huge SOX shield on the hat and the jersey are just such a weekend softball look. EVERYBODY looked fat in it, too.

Syndergaard exits with 5 2/3 under the belt, no runs, two hits, two walks, and five strikeouts.

A two-run shot by Robinson Cannoli puts the Mets up 2-0. Alonso crushed one to the opposite field but the wind knocked it down and the rightfielder had an easy reach over the fence.

I like how both Seaver's White Sox uniform and Nolan Ryan's Astro's uniform featured uniform numbers on the thigh. It, you know, drew one's attention to the cock area, and helped baseball be that much more zexy.

I'm not paying close attention, but now I'm thinking that the "Todd" in the booth may be Todd Zeile. I think I just heard something about him being a catcher who had to learn how to play the field. Mets are stinging the ball, but the wind is blowing in and it isn't dropping in.

I think we're getting a Todd Kalas/Ron Darling broadcast here. There's a third voice in there, too.

=batmagadanleadoff post_id=4228 time=1552489073 user_id=68] There's nothing wrong with that article except for the usual suspects who go apeshit whenever someone dares to criticize the MLB franchise that plays in the greatest media market on the planet and has just two first place finishes in 30 seasons to show for it --those 30 seasons more or less encompassing when Fred Wilpon took over the Mets from a disgusted Nelson Doubleday in the early 90s and became the team's de facto 100% owner.

But (1) isn't they improved on paper but they still may not succeed, and then they'll have to make new tough decisions next year true of almost everybody? It's certainly true of the Mets' rivals in the division. If Bryce Harper shits the bed or breaks a leg, the Phillies have a 13-year problem. And (2) you do get something a trophy for being in the middle of an exciting pennant race. There's a cash reward for the players, there are increased revenues for the organization. You get to check a few boxes for next year with regard to players who successfully established themselves, and everybody gets the experience and confidence of having competed at a top level. The vacillating between the Mets don't even try and the Mets are stupid for trying is dizzying. It's almost as maddening as the swings between the Mets have to be willing to take on big contracts to succeed, and eat them if necessary and I can't believe the LOLMets are still paying Bobby Bonilla, LOLOL. Folks got to pick a point of criticism and stick with it.

Somehow, we all missed this guy's addition. Virtually every outlet did too. All I found was a 20-word notice at CBSSports(dot)com. Casey, like David Bell and Aaron Boone before him, is a third-generation big-leaguer. His grandfather Joe Coleman was a World War II vet who pitched a long time for the Philadelphia Athletics both before and after his military service. His father Joe Junior, in addition to harassing Sandra Bullock throughout While You Were Sleeping, pitched for the Washington Senators in the sixties and the Tigers in the seventies. Obviously the family has a history of working for soon-to-be-extinct teams, and since Casey was a minor-league Tampa Bay Ray last year, the tradition may just continue. His face looks weird in this picture. So evenly tanned and unblemished and unlined. Even as he's uncoiling his muscle to turn stored energy into kinetic energy, his visage is distinctly undisturbed. It almost looks computer generated. Edgy MD wrote: https://metsmerizedonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/eric-hanhold-e1548347824939.jpg>

https://metsmerizedonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/eric-hanhold-e1548347824939.jpg> I'm still in camp. Big whoop, right? But you wouldn't say that if you were Paul Sewald, would you? A LOT of guys came to camp with the Mets this year. Sandy liked to keep things tight. But BVW was more inclusive this year. But now, a lot of them are gone. For instance ... um ... Jacob Rhame. Jacob Rhame has been shipped out. But not me. OK, you think, but my time will come. I bet you'd think that. But my time HASN'T come. Not yet. And you know whose time has come? Chris Flexen's time has come. But not mine. So how about you loosen up? And you're thinking, "Gosh, Holdie, don't get the old Greg Brady Swelled Head Disease. You've only thrown 5 2/3 innings and given up two earned runs. That's not much of a sample size." And I'll say, "Sample size? Nobody was talking about sample size when they shipped out Arquimedes Caminero. I remember that day well. For it was a day I was NOT shipped out." Drew Smith? Out for the season. Me? Eric Hanhold? NOT out for the season. The difference between me and David Peterson? You think you know the answer? You think it's that he's a big-shot prospect and I'm not? NO. It's that he's been farmed out and I'm still with the big boys. And you're thinking, "Stop, patting yourself on the back, Handyman. Drew Fucking Gagnon is still in camp." Check again. No he ain't. I'm Eric Hanhold, and I'm a comer. You say, "Gosh, you only pitched 2 1/3 undistinguished innings for the Mets last year — we can get MATT HARVEY to do that, LOL!" First of all, up your ass with the LOL. Second of all, Matt Harvey WISHES he was still in camp with the Mets, like me, Eric Hanhold. But he's not. You know who else isn't? Anthony Kay. He may be from Long Island, but he's not exactly going home at the end of March, capiche? I remember exactly where I was when, for instance, the clubbie came up to P.J. Conlon's locker: "Peej," he said, "Skip wants to see you." You know who remembers where they were when that same clubbie came up to my locker? Nobody remembers. Because that mofo ain't been NEAR my locker. Let me tell you about being a comer. I played at FIVE levels for the Mets last year. Gulf Coast? BOOM! Brooklyn? POW!! Bingo? CRASH!!! Vegas? FUHGEDDABOUTIT!! All the way up to the big club! That's not being a comer. That's coming like a COMET! You know who isn't coming like a comet? Steven Villines, that's who. Sidearm this, Villiney. Sidearm it from MINOR LEAGUE CAMP. "Handjive," you say, "aren't you being a little ... dicky?" Yeah, maybe, but it ain't bragging if you done it. That's what Rogers Hornsby said. And what I done is stay in camp until March 11 and probably beyond. You know who ain't done that? Corey Taylor. Am I being dicky? No, I'm being R.A. Dickey. See what I did there? No? Well, neither did Ryder Ryan. And you know why? Because he's not in Major League camp. Ryder Ryan. You think, "A name like that? There's a guy who has no problems with the ladies." And I think, "Maybe you're right, but right now they're MINOR LEAGUE CAMP ladies." I'm Eric Hanhold and I don't have that problem. I am indeed Eric Hanhold. Back in September 2017, the Mets sent Neil Walker to Milwaukee after the trade deadline for cash and a player to be named later. That player wasn't literally named "Later." He was named "Hanhold." Me. And now, a year and half later, Neil Walker has left the Brewers, he has stunk it up royally for the Yankees (a service to God, his country, the universe, and everybody; may it never be forgot), and is now trying to catch on with the lowly Marlins. But me — I've stuck around with the Mets, and so far stuck in camp. I'm Eric Hanhold. The Beatles sang a song about me. What's going to happen with me in 2019?

Hechie throws away a double-play ball following a nice pick by Smitty, and two more runs cross. Mets bat in the ninth down 8-1.

And ... five straight two-out hits off of Tyler Bashlor lead to a four-run seventh for the Marlins, opening up their lead to 6-1.

Holy Ralph Kiner! The Marlins have a firstbasemen named Garrett Cooper! Marlins lead 2-1, with a two-run homer by Anderson cutting into deGrom's otherwise scoreless five innings. He only gave up 10 of those all last season, I think. Six K's and no walks. The Mets only answer came on a sixth-inning RBI double by Dominique Smith. That first base competition is quite a little war, but any sign of humanity by deGrom being too much for the Mets offense to overcome ... well, that's an old song. Non-roster lefty Hector Santiago came in for the sixth. He then plunked leadoff hitter Starlin Castro, and immediately struck out the side in order. All three were righties!

Mets pull off the nifty-if-unsustainable trick of surrendering three hits in the first with no Marlins crossing the plate. Special thanks to Juan Lagares for taking out a baserunner at third.
