  1. Right now it looks like it's going to take a geological or epidemiological event for Keon Broxton to crack a lineup. Nice to see Smitty out there, and hopefully a good performance by him gets him a look in left field.
  2. https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/c_fill,w_912,h_516,f_auto,q_auto,g_auto/shape/cover/sport/new-york-mets-photo-day-5cbe3c481fcb7f8af5000001.jpg > The Mets needed more lefthanded relief. They were pro-active, and they went out and signed me. And now ... then need more lefthanded relief. The thing is that I've already been on the DL twice this season. The first time it was with left elbow soreness, and the second time, it was with ... left elbow soreness. We're not talking about UCL surgery yet, but ... let's just say I have Dr. Andrews' number in my cell phone. That's a lot of elipses in my first two paragraphs. That tells you a lot about my season so far. Putting aside my ERA, I haven't exactly been awful when I've been on the field, but it's been awful tough to stay on the field. And yeah, I know that I have an ex-Yankee taint. But the Mets and the HSS doctors say I don't have structural damage, so I hope to be back soon. Also, I'm not much of a breaking ball pitcher, so hopefully that takes a bit of stress off of Mr. Elbow. I prefer the hard stuff: a four-seam fastball, a two-seam fastball, and a cutter. I occasionally will bounce in a curve, but that's just to see up the heat. You and me have been set up with each other as the summer heat rolls in. Let's make the best of it and be a part of this thing. But I just play here. To predict what this thing is going to look like, I turn to you. Because looking like Jimmy Cagney is only going to get me so far.

Any protocol we have is based on tradition more than legal codes or natural law. And there comes a time to throw tradition into the wind. If you crossed this line out of ignorance, there might have been flags. But no, you looked into the void and courageously said that THIS was that hour that transcends any tradition, and you stepped over that line for all to see. I can only salute and applaud.

  6. I love that somebody voted for Calamity Jane, because any invocation of Howard Keel is funny. He was, like, the real-life Troy McClure.
  7. Johnny Lunchbucket wrote: Game ended when McNeil didn't score on the Davis double. Yeah, the bullpen did as much as they could to bail out Font. I put this loss on the offense. McNeil, as confident as he is at the plate with his goofy bat, seems a little out of his depth on the basepaths, which is funny because he's there often enough. I feel like I was writing that same statement, more or less, about Daniel Murphy 10 years ago.

  16. A double-header hosted by the Atlanta-affiliated Florida Fire Frogs was rained out for The St. Lucie Mets yesterday, leaving them continuing on their three-game schneid, but resting up their staff for the struggle ahead. I think a high-A team designating themselves after a state (Florida) instead of a locality, is ambiguous bullshit in general, but total bullshit if you're playing in an entire league named for the same state. The inaction keeps our heroes in neutral, 4.5 games out and holding down the forth-place fort in the six-team FSL South Division. A ten-game homestand starting on the 20th should be a good chance to make a move. Shortstop Manny Rodriguez: There's a guy who isn't waiting on a cue to make a move. The Brooklyn native and 10th-round pick from 2018 has only made four errata through 22 games and has lately been turning it on with the bat, as well, going .303 / .378 / .394 // .772 over his last ten games in the notoriously power-sapped league. Manny didn't show a whole lot at the plate last year with the Cyclones, so a breakthrough would be great news, as all reports suggest he has all the defensive tools to stay at short. Manny went to high school at Calvert Hall here in Baltimore. Brooklyn, Baltimore, and the Mets. He's practically me. Have we discussed Kyle Wilson recently? Not for a few weeks we haven't. A seven-run ass-kicking on April 12 ballooned Kyle the Smile's ERA on the young season to 7.00. Well, in the four starts since, he's totally lived up to the name Wilson, giving up five earned runs in 18 1/3 innings, including two five-inning shutout starts, for a 2.45 ERA over that run. And he's from the town of Peculiar, Missouri, which has to have ended up in a Mark Twain novel somewheres. Know what else is peculiar? The rising performance of Blake Taylor. I mean, his performance isn't that unusual. Players trend up and down with the ebbs and flows of the season all the time, but do you know where you know that name from? It sticks in your craw, doesn't it? Isn't that the name of that dashing scoundrel from that nighttime soap your sister used to watch. Perhaps he's the tennis pro down at the club your brother-in-law invites you to just to remind you he's loaded and you ain't. No, that's not where you know Blake from. Think back to 2014. Blake was the Player to Be Named Later that came from Pittsburgh along with Zach Thornton in the Ike Davis trade. As surprising as it may seem, Ike Davis is still paying dividends for the =#0040FF]New York Mets. It's been paying dividends the last few weeks, anyswitch. Blake has thrown shutout ball in his last five appearances, getting saves in three of them, regaining the closer role he had lost to Ryley Gilliam for a few weeks. His sweet little run has lowered his ERA to 2.93 over 15 1/3 innings this season, saving six games in six tries. Ryley Gilliam and Blake Taylor. Doesn't anybody have a first name anymore? Well, soon, the first name in Florida baseball is going to be Lucie. SAINT Lucie. The action continues this evening as they again try to get two in against the Fire Frogs. Kyle Wilson looks to continue his hot streak as he takes the mound in game one at 4:00 PM. 17. John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara were paired a lot. So were Cary Grant and Irene Dunn. Some of those films were uneven. Some were pure poo.
  18. Well, by "top," I mean to imply some legacy of quality left behind, whether in a modest degree of quality over a high number of films, or an overwhelming degree of quality over a few films. John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara were paired a lot. So were Cary Grant and Irene Dunn. Some of those films were uneven. Some were pure poo.
  19. Double Switch wrote: As an ardent Hitchcock aficionado, I must go with the remake of The Man Who Knew Too Much even if after a while Que Será Será crawls all over my last nerve. It kind of works, doesn't it, though? Singing that goofy song like she has a gun to her head, knowing it may be the salvation or doom of her child, is as tense as it gets. As with Jimmy Stewart, one of Hitchcock's talents was finding a pained, disquieting dark side even in America's favorite paragons of easy wholesomeness.
  20. Is there a keeper from the Kurt Russell/Goldie Hawn ouvre? We're looking for some degree of quality here, man.
  21. Ainge looks about 16 in that photo above. I had forgotten but am reminded how desperately rushed to the majors Ainge was. In an effort to secure his commitment to baseball over basketball, the perennially last-place, expansion-era Blue Jays debuted him at AAA at 19-years-old to start his career. And despite him being completely out of his depth there, bumped him to the majors at 20. Every year, his NCAA basketball obligations (and possibly his academic ones) caused him to miss Spring Training and the start of the regular season, which is a lot to ask of a veteran, much less a kid who has been promoted to the majors before his time. By 1980, he was finally starting to catch up a little and look like a major leaguer — if only the most marginal of the sort — but more troubles in the strike-shortened season of 1981, combined with a high-profile finish to his NCAA basketball career, led him to jump to the NBA. He had some catching up to do in the NBA, too. According to Larry Bird, Danny shot "0-for–2547" on his first day of practice. I think he remains the only high schooler to achielve all-American status in baseball, football, and basketball — which has to get Dave Winfield's goat, if only a little.
  22. Vladimir Guerrero, Jr. becomes the youngest Blue Jay to homer, passing ... Danny Ainge. http://n8itude.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/Jays-79-Kodak-Ainge-Waiste.jpg> He later homered a second time in the game, knocking Ainge to third. Copying Pete Alfonso, his first homer was an explosion to straight-away center.
  23. Anthony Kay throws a seven-inning shutout for his first professional complete game in Game One of a double-header over Altoona. Kay scattered three hits while striking out eight and walking one. He probably won't be thrust into the Mets rotation this season unless a serious need forces their hand. But he could be a meaningful piece of the big-league bullpen down the stretch, and maybe into the post-season, if it comes to that.
  24. If you only get one touch in the game, Smithy makes good on it. No sooner had he entered the match than he lays in the final tally for a comprehensive thrashing of Washington National. The three points has drawn Metropolitan even with Atlanta in league play.
