The lineup isn't merely a no-Conforto zone. McNeilio sitting out too.

I also had a notion, with little evidence to support it, that Keon was a little bit in the doghouse. Mick only found eight trips to the plate for him in all of May. If you're going to keep a guy on the roster, you have to find spots for him, because sooner or later, you're going to need one more hit to tie and/or win the game, and he's going to be the only guy on your bench.

And so, one day after the Mets lose a game (and a series), in large part because they burned Alonso earlier in the game and were left with their slowest runner on base in the ninth, decide that what they need is ... another marginal pitcher. I can't be the only one who sees that this is madness. I also like that Joe West is a human wall, but he took his sweet time interjecting himself between Crawford and Zim. Carey doesn't say anything about it, but my guess is that Zim was steamed about that checked-swing strike three. Crawford also took his time making that call.

I've got a better one: Franklyn Kilome.

"OH, I'M SORRY!! I THOUGHT YOU WERE SPEAKING THE NATURE OF MY CHARACTER AND BEHAVIOR, AND NOT THE QUALITY OF MY JUDGMENT IN THIS SINGLE FUCKING FLEETING INSTANCE!!! THAT'S FAR LESS FUCKING DEROGATORY!! MY BAD!!"

"DON'T YOU CALL ME A FUCKING **********!!" You could call an ump anything in the book, but once you went there, all bets were off.

Rick Sutcliffe, Harry Carey, Don Zimmer, Jerry Crawford, and Joe West. Zimmer looks like he's just going to explode into smithereens once or twice. There's a few problems in that even though Riverfront is packed, it's still Riverfront, so you can't pick up crowd noise, and you're not picking up pieces of the fight either. Zimmer's a pro, and he seems to have a sense of where the hot camera is, so he positions himself to mostly be screened from Crawford, and therefore keep the league's office from reading his lips. Nonetheless, there's clearly a whole bunch of bullshits and not a few **********s. mICMIRf7xmE The world is probably a better place now. At least the baseball world. But it's hard not to miss a world where (1) five teams thought it correct to put a madman like Zimmer in charge of their teams at one point or another, and in fact, there were half a dozen madmen managers cycling around the league at any one point, and folks thought things were just fine that way; and (2) part of their jobs was to absolutely lose their minds on the field a half a dozen times a year, and tear an umpire to bits. And it was almost invariably during day games, too. Like it was a special treat for the ladies. Harry, for his part, just disappears during the most heated part of the argument. He's like "Let's all just pour ourselves a cold one and enjoy this shit."

Opposing starter gone in the second inning and the whole story all season with this oppenent has been how shallow their bullpen is. I liked last year's team, and I like this one more. But the whole prevailing offensive philosophy just seems so injudicious.

Less talked about is that they lead to some emotional turmoil for a few days or weeks. I mentioned getting sucker punched in the street several years ago. I refused medical attention at the scene. I'm a man and I didn't really feel anything. What I didn't consider in my stupidity is that (1) that's the adrenaline talking, and (2) the brain doesn't feel pain. So later than night and in the next several days I was bouncing among depression, rage, and utter disengagement. I can only speculate about Nimmo, but he sure looks like his head hasn't been in the game more than one time in three.

Yeah, Stranger Things, whether you love it or hate it, is aimed right between your eyes.

https://secure.milb.com/assets/images/6/6/4/247698664/cuts/1280x720/cut.jpg> i guess 5-5 over the last 10 isn't a juggernaut's pace, but for Columbia, it's been a big step in righting a ship that has been taking on water and seriously listing. Last night's 3-1 win over the questionably named Augusta Greenjackets put them on the top step of the cellar, still in last place but a mere half game behind the sixth-place Asheville Tourists — eight games out of first, but there are a lot of teams between here and there. Speaking of here and there, infielder/outfilder Hansel Moreno woke up yesterday a St. Lucie Met, but went to bed a Columbia Firefly. He can't be too happy with the demotion, but at least, rather than wreck the clubhouse, the young man wrecked the ballpark, going 3-5 in his first game back with a homerun and a stolen base. Maybe between this sort of strategic demotion now and then, and the odd mystery Cuban, this team might find some offensive vigor, eventually. As it is, they're still DFL in offense among the circuit, and it isn't particularly close. To be straight and chaste with you, the rotation hasn't been burying a lot of teams either. At least they hadn't been before Colin Holderman came along. The 6'7" 2016 draftee has just returned from missing all of 2018 and more with a trip to Tommy John Camp. Well, write that surgeon's name down because he is back in a big way, winning each of his first three starts while chalking up a 1.76 ERA. As a rehabber, he shouldn't even be getting deep enough into games to get the win, but a 0.85 WHIP and a .157 batting average against has allowed him to finish five innings in each turn, despite pitch count limits. HE'S THAT GOOD!! But when talking about good, we should talk about reliever José Moreno. We've already talked about Hansel Moreno, but this is a different guy. A pitching guy. And a pretty stingy pitching guy. José's 2.77 ERA is third-best among Firefly firemen, and frankly, he walks too many. But he keeps most of those guys from coming around to score. That may be a house of cards, but THAT'S OK, because José's brother Angel Moreno is a slugging outfielder in the Cardinals organization. And it's his twin brother too, so if this pitching thing doesn't work out, you KNOW he's got the DNA to swing a bat. Swinging bats are going to make or break this team, and so far, it's been more of the latter, and that's why they need YOUR support tonight as they take on Augusta one more time, deploying Thomas Szapucki of T(h)om(as)s River, NJ in a game that could mean escape from the cellar, hopefully for the long haul.
