deGrom was pulled because Mickey wanted to protect him. Diaz was held out because Mickey wanted to protect him. Let's protect a lead, man.

With respect to Bob Ojeda, Dark Horse 1986 has to be Ray Knight. He was a complete load in 1985, and in 1986, he was earning MVP votes. 1988 is David Cone coming and going. Who the hell was this guy? 1990? Um, Wally Whitehurst did pretty good.

Is everybody named Zack?

Sweet golfing, Todd Frazier.

Keep bunting, Mets.

And then there's Jimmy Piersall.

Gary sayeth that Greinke was the first player he recalled to be publicly open about dealing with clinical depression. How's about Pete Harnisch?

Terrific heads-up play by Adeiny.

I know he's trying to stir up shit, and maybe there's shit here that needs to be stirred, but his summation of Todd Zeile's performance seems to be baseless, and crafted to fit his thesis.

That was fun. Dom Smith clearly got winded his last 90 feet.

That's pretty much what Raissman's thesis is. That he had a sword dangling over him and he eventually went nuts. Understandably to Raissman's apparent thinking. But I've had a sword hanging over me most of my life and I have all my breakdowns in private, thank you very much. Still, Raissman, whose specialty seems to be getting inside info on dramatic employment situations, seems to only have a single source and half of the story he's hoping for, filling in the rest with speculation.

So, the Mets have not one, not two, but three infielders on the DL. Something's got to give when they come back, but how do the Mets possibly bump Hech off the roster? Granted, we don't know for certain if Jed Lowrie will ever return, or if he's alive, or if he ever existed. They can try to push infielders J.D. Davis and/or Jeff McNeil to the outfield, but presumably Nimmo is going to return someday also. With Lowrie playing the part of Schröedinger's Infielder, and any number of future injuries in the realm of possibility, this squeeze may not come to pass, but kudos to Hechavarria making it a possible problem. Where would they be without him these last few weeks?

No, but maybe someday. I technically don't know quite what that sig line means.

After losing two in a row to Jupiter, there was likely nobody manager Chad Kreuter would have preferred as his starter for the opening game of the team's crucial series against the Charlotte Stone Crabs. But it wasn't Dedniel's day. Single-single-homer at the top of the game and the Crabs never looked back, Crabs being unable to turn their heads anyhow. The series may be The St. Lucie Mets last chance at life in the first half, and losing the opener dropped them six games off the pace in The Florida State League South Division, with an elimination number of 11, having won only four of their last six. Any hope you can glean from that must be further tempered by the reality that there are four teams in front of them. But not everybody on the team is playing sad trombone music. Oh, no! Tony Dibrell, for instance has been Mr. May. (also known as Señor Mayo in St. Lucie's Cuban section). The starting pitcher has celebrated the very merry month by submitting five quality starts in five outings since the close of April. His ERA over the month has been a lilliputian 1.38 in 26 innings. He's only given up two homers all season in 51 2/3 innings. But has Give-'Em Hell Dibrell been named to the Florida State League South Division All-Star Team? Normally, I'd like to say that's a stupid and somewhat racist question and you should be ashamed for asking it. But no, somehow the roster has been released (more on that below) and Tony's name was not on it. Fuck the Florida State League and by extension, all of minor league baseball, right? Also inexplicably left off the roster (CONSPIRACY!) has been Yeizo Campos. Already the greatest Yeizo in American professional baseball history, the Venzuelan has been hotter than a Maracaibo parking lot. In summer. With a tango championship or something going on. Hot. Yielding only one run in his last seven outings, Camper Van Beethoven has lowered his ERA to 1.47. If that number means anything to you, it may be because it's also the ERA that got Jesse Orosco a third-place finish in the 1983 Cy Young Award voting. His peripherals are smashing also, with his right arm striking out 24 and walking only six in his 18 1/3 innings. YC stands only 5'9" and his fastball would tend to lose velocity over the course of his starts, so The Mets elected to move him to the pen and now look like geniuses for doing so. GENIUSES!! And no, in another miscarriage of justice the division All-Star roster does not include the name Yeizo. OUTRAGEOUS! But stupid can't stop progress. And progress has called the team's leading hitter, infielder Luis Carpio, up to Binghamton. So let's look at outfielder Quinn Brodey. Quinn the Eskimo has not been fucking around these last few weeks, hitting a rapturous .487 / .545 / .692 // 1.237 over his last 10 games. Were you sitting down? I should have told you to sit down. But maybe you should sit down now when I tell you the former Stanford outfielder has NOT BEEN NAMED TO THE FLORIDA STATE LEAGUE SOUTH DIVISION ALL-STAR TEAM. WHAT. THE. FUCK?!! Yeah, so now you're asking, well, wtf WAS named to the team. The answers are: Blake Taylor, a reliever whose ERA of 2.82 makes Yeizo Campos laugh, but he has been doing the closing; and Nick Meyer, a catcher with a .584 OPS. I don't care if defensively you're the second coming of Hank McGraw, a .584 OPS is hard to justify on an all-star, but he has caught 53.84% of all would-be base-stealers. So he's not completely unqualified, you know? And that's it! Two all-stars for a division representing seven teams, and they are not even remotely the team's most dynamite players. There's got to be a fix in. If you want to complain, write to the team's manager, Toby Gardenhire, who is blessed with Metly DNA, being the son of early eighties Mets shortstop Ron Gardenhire, and possibly of 1997 gascan reliever Toby Borland as well. Since I began writing this post, the Mets have fallen behind 11-1 in tonight's game against Charlotte, who isn't even that good of a team. Oh, well, there's always the second half.
