We are all unproven. No amount of patterns from the past can lay out the future with absolute certainty. We can only approach it. But a consensus evaluation of a team having the best system in baseball, that comes after giving up much of their talent at the deadline, leaves me optimistic. Impatience and consolidation certainly strikes me as counterproductive. With three top starting pitching prospects coming of age as we speak and three top outfield prospects right behind them — along with perhaps the most consistently productive hitter in the game tied up for 10 years — they are certainly the organization I would want. When the team has failed in recent years (and definitely in recent months), I am far more concerned about the philosophy than the talent level. I don't know what to do about that, but I tend to think that philosophy can be over-turned a lot faster than talent at the organizational level.

No, that is not why I want to know what you mean. I want to know what you mean because you make claims that are baseless and indefensible in pursuit of laying out an attention-grabbing hot take. And I graciously want to give you an opportunity to come clean, or at least walk these takes back when you realize how baseless they actually are. Joey Gerber had a herniated disc in his upper back which led to surgery before the 2021 season, and no back problems have since resurfaced. He subsequently had a forearm issue that also created extended missed time. David Wright had spinal stenosis. Don Mattingly reportedly injured his back wrestling in the clubhouse with Bob Shirley. He denied this, but he apparently suffered some sort of contact injury that led to a degenerative disc condition in his lower back. These, it should be clear, are different conditions. That the player positions matter should also be clear, as pitching and hitting are very different skills stressing different muscle groups in different ways. Mattingly and Wright also were well paid stars on multi-year deals in the second half of their careers. This is an easily releasable player hanging on the end of an MLB roster while making barely over the MLB minimum. He may even get non-tendered as the offseason progresses. It would not take long to assemble a list of a dozen players (pitchers and hitters) who suffered herniated discs and continued to perform afterwards. Without looking it up, I know the list would include Max Scherzer (pitcher) and Miguel Cabrera (hitter), both almost certainly destined for the Hall of Fame. We do not have to have a hot-take on everything. And I really, REALLY do not need you to tell me about my former career. Cut that **** out already, please. This has nothing to do with editing.

I do not deserve your condescension. I do not really think he cares about your confidence, so if you really mean "I meant that it was too bad it wasn't arm related because I would have been more confident that he is fully cured," I simply do not believe you. (That does not sound "cruel." It sounds like utter nonsense.). But this is hardly the first time you have twisted yourself into a pretzel pretending you meant something you did not. Good God.

They probably offered him more cheddar. More cabbage. More buckaroonies. It's a rare time in a coach's career when he finds himself in demand enough that more than one team is bidding for him or her. It is particularly rare in the life of a first base coach.

I am certain that the facts do not bear out this incredibly broad distinction. There are all sorts of different was to injure an arm, and all sorts of ways to injure one's back. I can think of all sorts of guys who recovered from one and all sorts of guys who recovered from the other. I can think of all sorts of guys who did not recover from both categories. I also still have no idea what too bad is supposed to mean.

The Mets have enough talent to be in a lofty position for 10 years. Consolidating that would be unwise. Consolidating it as described above would be indefensible. I still haven't gotten over the deadline fiasco. Steve Phillips can say whatever he wants with very little accountability. Heck, he has a personal motivation to see the organization blow themselves up.

Jomo is at the top of the development staff on the pitching side, so it makes sense to see him as a prime candidate for the job, as (a) the Mets just went out and made their top hitting guy from the development staff their lead batting coach, and ( the Mets have a real chance to build their staff around three young starters that Jomo has helped develop. The Mets pay him when he cannot play for them in 2025, and then decline his option when he can play for them in 2026. This seems for all the world like his rehab isn't progressing, but they still may be interested in bringing him back on a minor-league contract. They may need the roster spot, and unlike during the season, there is no offseason IL list to hide him on. Dylan Ross is next in line for that MLB roster spot, coming off an overpowering minor-league season, striking out 80 over 54 innings across three levels, but this Joey Gerber character is also in the mix. The Mets need to field at least one Joey every season. Dick Allen has a track! Four other Met-related lefthanders occurred to me last night, each with non-HoF pitching careers that were probably stronger, if less celebrated, than Fernando's: John Candeleria, Jon Matlack, Mickey Lolich, Kenny Rogers. Not that I would complain to see him in, but Sandy Koufax he was not.

I mean, he carried Potsie and Ralph for years, give the guy some credit at least As long as the Mets don't sign Chachi as some sort of ******** replacement, I'm good either way.

Justin Willard not yet announced but he looks like a solid piece of reporting. Subsequent reports indicate that he has since located the top of his head. Relatedly, assistant pitching coach Desi Druschel has been re-signed by the Yankees almost a year to the date after the Mets signed him away from the Yankees. Druesch was famed for being "one of the best in the industry from a pitch-design and seam-orientation optimization standpoint." But when the pitch is off the plate, by design or not, that only gets you so far. It is worth noting that Desi was not among the Mets coaches explicitly not asked back last month. The Mets were aiming to retain him but he had asked for and receive permission to seek new opportunities — or old ones in this case. One might imagine his jumping ship occurring around the same time the Mets reportedly filled the primary pitching coach role is something less than a coincidence. Reporting has also indicated the team set to hire Rachel Folden as the hitting coach at Double-A Binghamton. Folden this season was a hitting coach in the Cubs’ minor league system. And Internet Met Guys everywhere are bending over backwards to decry the move while insisting it is not because she is a female even though they know exactly zero facts about her besides her being a female.

Why do you think Fernando is a lock? He has a cultural significance, and that is not nothing, but just sticking to Met-related lefthanders, it is hard to argue that Jerry Koosman, Frank Viola, and Johan Santana didn't all have stronger overall careers. (OE: Frank Tanana, too, while I am working within that subset.) He was a better hitter than all of them, and a better fielder than all of them save Santana, but even so.

Well, no major losses because it is half a minute into the free agency period. But losing Pete Alonso or Edwin Diaz would certainly qualify as major should that come to pass. Starling Marte already is primarily in a reserve role, reduced mainly to DH vs. lefthanders and very occasional outfielder.

Most interesting to me would be finding out who is on this committee. Back-door committees should probably be made up entirely of Hall-of-Famers (it's their club, in the end), but they tend to make them hybrids of Hall members, executives, and veteran/retired writers.

Ron Howard's OPS, to be fair, did not go down because his performance declined. He left TV to direct films, but he might well have stayed just as productive had he stuck to sitcom acting.

Álvarez was pretty effective also. He was certainly shaky for a few weeks before his demotion, but was kinda matching Torrens step for step the last two months. Torrens was certainly more consistent the whole year though, and may even have been worthy of a GG nomination, if that sort of thing matters, but Bailey definitely deserved his hardware, and won it running away. I am on Team Torrens also.

Who do you think was the Mets defensive MVP this year? They got their best play from the catcher position, but seeing as nobody played a majority of the innings there, it is hard to go to bat for Torrens or Álvarez. On the other hand, Torrens was really valuable when he was out there, and the catching position is where value can be valuable. Baty added a lot of surprising value by being comfortable at second, and the obvious candidate would be Lindor. He plays a premium position, plays it everyday, and plays it well. It's just ... he didn't play it particularly well this year, and even had some spots where his head was less than perfectly in the game. Torrens may well be the answer.

Sorry. When one (like myself, for instance) specifically sets the size of an image to keep it from blowing up to the full length of your screens, it does not render responsively, and so does not shrink to no more than the width of the screen of the device it is appearing on. And so the right side of my image may run off the right side of the screen on some devices. That is sad. It is probably fixable, but my programming skills are rusty.

By chance, Sandy is the brother of Tim Johnson, the Blue Jays manager who gained a sad sort of ignominy, getting exposed for stolen valor, attempting to inspire his players with fabricated tales of battlefield service during The Vietnam War, when he in fact done his wartime service stateside in The Marine Corps Reserve. Tim described his exposure and his apology as a weight lifted off of him, and the team went into Spring Training the next season with him still at the helm, hoping to put the events behind them, but the story would not go away and he was let go before Opening Day. He would go on to a long career managing in The Mexican League, as well the US-based independent minors.
