  1. I love the American League team that has beaten the Yankees two of the last three years. Y'know what's cool about this? That Yanqui fans paid so little mind to the NL over the years (not worthy of their attention) to the point where prior to the Astros transfer to the AL, and really prior to that era when Clemens & Pettitte were ping-ponging back and forth between the two teams, I'd bet that a significant portion* of Yanqui fans had either no idea what the Houston ball-club was named or whether or not there was even an MLB team in that town. They know now. * I'm thinking maybe 70%. I'd go higher but some probably knew from playing fantasy teams that used both leagues
  2. =Centerfield post_id=24843 time=1571667875 user_id=65]... A seemingly harmless walk to Springer. Brantley had been double-switched out of the game, so you figure that Altuve wouldn't get much to hit. But you know, baseball.
  3. I was gonna say ... just 52 y/o and worked playoff games as recently as two weeks ago (Yanx/Twinz) You figured there had to be an odd story to it.
  4. The Houston Colt-'45s/Astros were actually my first least favorite team. My young head understood that the Mets, being a relatively new expansion team, weren't expected to be good like all those clubs who had all that time to gather and nurture players. But it bugged me that we were constantly behind our expansion partner in the standings that I'd look at each day and that there were always more of their guys towards the top of the comprehensive Batting Leaders list the Sunday NYTimes published each week (because how, if not for Batting Average, were you supposed to judge players?). So in addition to rooting for the Mets to do well, there was always a side look in those tables towards hoping that the Astros team, as well as various individual Astros, were faring poorly. I eventually got over it. Certainly a lot better than Astros fans have gotten over '86

Altuve may be the shortest player in the major leagues, but today he doth stand astride the world like a Colossus. Sort of like this, maybe? [fimg=300]https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EHS5FugXUAA4zYr.jpg[/fimg] You figure that the TV folks get enough kicks out of showing the contrast the other way around that, after last night, it's only fair.
  6. Not just a great catch [brantley: above] but also how quickly he got up and the speed/accuracy of the throw he got off - although Buck & Smoltz let Judge off the hook a bit for his running. It's a tough situation for a runner (and they didn't show the best angle until several replays into the next inning) but he went too far towards 2nd. He's not getting to 3rd even if Brantley short-hops that ball and if it gets by him he's running forever no matter where he starts. But if he's 20-30 feet from 2nd (instead of practically at the bag) he gets there anyway on a non-catch and at least gives himself a fighting chance to get back to 1st if it's caught.
  7. =Fman99 post_id=24793 time=1571571559 user_id=86] Missed the ending because of tired-old-man-itis ...
  8. Thus ends a decade of Yanqui-less World Series (the first since the nineteen-teens) ... and yet the sport survives.
  9. Logically there are too many good starters on both sides for this not to be close (although when did baseball ever listen to logic?). Went with Houston in seven. At some point the Nats pen has to burn them at least once.
  10. I went with 'Astros' but I'm not dreading the possibility of a potential Nats win as much as some seem to be doing here. I understand YOUR feelings here but you're the one who has to live in that area. The only real Nats fans I know are a set of cousins in Herndon, VA Cousin Kerrie married a guy who played in both in HS and college so that clan is really the only extended family I have who are baseball fans and they latched onto the Nats and a partial season ticket plan soon after the team's arrival. Rick will be a bit obnoxious about it if given the chance but I don't see them often enough to worry about it and I'm not on FACEBOOK so I'll survive. And there's also a reluctance to want to see a 93-win team over one who won 107 (unless you happen to be one of the '93' guys). Mostly I'm just rooting for a well-played seven game series where maybe an occasional sub-four-hour game is thrown in (just to change things up a bit).
  11. Ken Rosenthal finally finds someone his own height to talk to.
  12. Little Big Man!! http://onceuponatimeinawestern.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/Dustin-Hoffman-as-Jack-Crabb-in-Little-Big-Man-1970-white-02-300x233.jpg>
  13. Brad Peacock and Chad Green are to be the starting mound opponents in this [CROSSOUT]spa day[/CROSSOUT] bullpen game. Either that or they're the remaining suspects in some baseball-themed version of CLUE, I haven't figure out which. Brad Peacock ... on the mound ... with the baseball is to start tonight's affair at precisely 8:08 EDT
  14. What's his non porn name?
  15. Well that was a bit of an odd game.
  16. Anytime that the rookie Alvarez, or Gourriel at 1B, or even the supposed MVP Bregman for that matter, feel like maybe joining this series they'd be a welcome addition.

  21. Girardi's Yanquiness or not has no bearing with me. Either they think he'll do a good job or they don't. The assumption all along, especially once became apparent that Maddon was headed elsewhere, was that Girardi and the Cubs were the perfect fit. That Chicago guys seem to love Chicago -- JG went to HS in Peoria, then to Northwestern, and then played seven seasons on the North side -- is the basis for much of the speculation, although Rahm Emmanuel quickly found out that his dream job (he said that being Mayor of Chicago was the one job he'd leave national politics to take) wasn't so dreamy after all so maybe that old, 'Don't wish too hard, you just may get it', adage applies.
  22. I had no idea that Houston only had three starters. I guess they left Wade Miley off the roster. Yeah, Miley was the next guy in line but a poor September -- if you can call: 5 starts with 11.1 combined innings while giving up 21 Runs on 28 Hits "poor" -- left him not only out of the rotation but off the roster entirely. Peacock last started in late June with only some time off (injury I assume) and a handful of relief appearances since then. Their 'bullpen day', if they need one, will probably involve 24 y/o Mexican rookie Jose Urquidy who they're apparently high on and who made a couple of starts prior to the Greinke trade then was called back up in September. Their plans for avoiding a bullpen game apparently involves hitting grounders to Yanqui infielders as a method for padding their run total. And if that's not enough they'll probably go back to just hitting drunks in the outfield grandstands with batted balls.
  23. Between the fielding errors (4), the inability to hit w/RiSP (0-7), plus the HBPs (1) & Wild Pitches (2) it's amazing the effect the YSIII crowd had on the game. Oh wait, you mean those were the stats from the home team?!? ... never mind! You KNOW that had those been Houston stats (they made one error) the "raucous crowd", along with assorted 'ghosts' would have been cited not just as A cause but as THE cause. But, instead, the home teams are 1-3 in this series and sub-.500 overall during these playoffs as a whole. btw, how those WPs (on Loaisiga) weren't charged as passed balls to Sanchez is a mystery. I guess they figure that, with Sanchez, balls that hit his glove on a fly aren't necessarily destined to be caught.
  24. Welcome to the monkey house Joe Maddon!
  25. Game Off!! Talking heads (and maybe even us) now have 24 hours to debate whether this found day off in exchange for the final four games being in a row benefits the Stros or the Yanx
