  1. =seawolf17 post_id=25472 time=1572440869 user_id=91] You know, that orange double-bag isn't a *terrible* idea.
  2. I'm not quite sure what they expected Torre to do. I don't think I want to live in a world where some exec in the stands is empowered to overrule calls on the field. As it was the umps were already too indecisive: they made the call right away but then discussed it for five minutes AND THEN went to the headphones for five more even though it's not a reviewable play. It was a judgement call: Make one and stick to it! Tonight will be the 40th WS Game 7 in MLB history. The home team is 19-20
  3. So as the better-announcing Buck once put it: 'And we'll see you tomorrow night'
  4. NOW you're removing him?!?!?
  5. If you're the Nats you GOTTA be sending Strasburg out there for the 9th. He's at about 7 innings worth of pitches thru 8 and besides, what are you saving him for ... a start next week?!?
  6. So they waited five minutes before deciding to go to the headphones ... and then they spent about the same amount of time ON the headphones ... all for a call which they knew in advance was NOT subject to review!! But it will be limited and quick ...
  7. MAKE A FUCKING CALL !!!!!!!
  8. I wouldn't have called that (the 1st base interference). If the ball hits him a stride or two earlier then, yes. But in his final stride where else is he supposed to be?
  9. =batmagadanleadoff post_id=25441 time=1572400564 user_id=68]Do the announcers ever talk about players' season stats? Or at least show them? Because obviously, whatever a player did in his last three games is much more meaningful than what he did over the first 162 games.
  10. Nats have as many runs thru five (now 5-2/3) innings tonight as they did in all three games at home combined: Three
  11. Well, according to someone I read yesterday (I forget who as they all start to blend together after a while) the decision is now in Fred-land. The first two rounds were headed by BVW (along with various lieutenants) plus Jeff. Now whatever third round survivors remain need to get the Fred stamp of approval. What's unknown, even now that he is supposedly a bit more removed from day-to-day operations, is how much his vote counts. I mean ultimately it counts for everything but will he go totally against the recommendation(s) if one guy, maybe not one favored from the prior rounds, "lights up the room" for him? Or, for that matter, we don't know how the power sharing worked up until now; how much of a gap in opinion will it take for Jeff to override BVW and the braintrust?
  12. The same Italian-American who played an Irishman in GOODFELLOWS
  13. Supposedly his (football) teammates loved him, so who knows. My point was that that sort of celebrating despite the team's position in the game, one which seemed so out of place to me then, is now commonplace including in the one sport that used to shun that sort of stuff. Meanwhile, a funny thing has happened on the way to a Nationals domination.
  14. =LWFS post_id=25294 time=1572230314 user_id=84] WAAAAAAY too close to take, Master Robles.
  15. =LWFS post_id=25293 time=1572229944 user_id=84] I'm not typically one to get all red-ass, but... post-HR choreography in the dugout when said HR only puts you within three of tying, and said HR BARELY made it out of the damn park, AND you're about to lose your third straight at home... well, it ain't a great look.
  16. Trump will be in the building, maybe he'll want to pitch. Did you see where he doesn't want to throw out the first pitch because they'll make him wear the kevlar vest and all that and "it'll make me look fat". Yeah, that's what'll do it!
  17. "The warrior", "the toughest MF on the planet", "the ultimate gamer", Max Scherzer, is not starting tonight b/c of recurring back/neck issues. Joe Ross gets the ball. WOW!! I hadn't realized that Ross was even on the roster until he showed up in the middle of Friday's game: a tidy 2 scoreless innings, one hit/19 pitches. He only pitched 3 times in September (including one on 9/2 where we hit him up for 7 runs in under 4 IP) and Friday was his first appearance in this year's post-season.
  18. Edgy MD wrote: Without looking up the others, I know Lolich's was the only one of his career. Jose Santiago had one other career HR in addition to his WS dinger Kenny Holtzman hit two Mudcat Grant had six McNally had nine and Bob Gibson totaled 24 Lolich, by the way, in his much-derided lone season with the Mets, had a 3.22 ERA in 192 2/3 innings. Those numbers would get him at least a taste of Cy Young support today. I think a lot of that had to do with the price being Rusty, but also with, as they'd say today, the 'optics', although I like how BB-Ref's bio lists Lolich at 6' 1" 170 Either those were his Jr HS measurements or the line about what it would read if he put his other foot on the scale comes to mind. I'm 6'0"/180 and people look at me and say 'Damn, you're a skinny sumbitch', a line I'm pretty sure no one said ever about Lolich ... not by the end of his career anyway. A good GM could probably field a halfway decent middle infield and still keep it under the just the weight gained by mound-mates Lolich & McLain during the course of their careers.
  19. https://twitter.com/martinonyc/status/1188264497041018890https://twitter.com/martinonyc/status/1188264497041018890 The Mets NOT deciding to name Eduardo Perez as their next manager is not the same thing as the Mets deciding NOT to name Eduardo Perez as their next manager. Just so as we're all clear on this now. I know I'm not.
  20. Home teams are now 17-17 in this year's post-season play. The Houston-v-Tampa ALDS series was a home team 'Sweep' (5-0). This series, so far, has been an 0-4 'anti-sweep'.
  21. The problem is that the Nats had a lengthy winning streak with those unis so they've stuck with them for the entire post. Maybe that'll end after tonight. And obviously that sub-3 Hour pace went away long ago and this one will be closer to (though at least under) 4:00
  22. So now we've got Marly Rivera (whoever she is) saying she knows that Jerez doesn't know what he earlier claimed to know, or at least what Gomez assumed to know about what Jerez knows. I just don't know anymore.
  23. During the ten year period from 1965 thru 1974, six different pitchers hit a total of eight World Series Home Runs 1965 - Mudcat Grant (Twins) off Howie Reed (Dodgers) 1967 - Jose Santiago (Red Sox) off Bob Gibson (Cardinals) 1967 - Bob Gibson (Cardinals) off Jim Lonborg (Red Sox) 1968 - Mickey Lolich (Tigers) off Nelson Briles (Cardinals) 1968 - Bob Gibson (Cardinals) off Joe Sparma (Tigers) 1969 - Dave McNally (Orioles) off Jerry Koosman (Mets) 1970 - Dave McNally (Orioles) off Wayne Granger (Reds) 1974 - Ken Holtzman (A's) off Andy Messersmith (Dodgers) - The consecutive series of 1967 & 1968 had four pitcher HRs - Gibson & McNally hit two each - Gibson is the only pitcher to both hit one (two actually) as well as give one up, and he did it in the same series (though not the same game) - Santiago's HR and McNally's 1969 shot were solo HRs in losing efforts and provided their club's only run of the game. - McNally's 1970 HR was a Grand Slam The kicker to all this is that there has been one pitcher HR since 1974, Joe Blanton for the 2008 Phillies off Tampa's Edwin Jackson Now obviously the introduction of the DH has a lot to do with that, but still ... There was no DH used in the WS for a while, no not even in AL parks, so pitchers have batted more than half as often as during that decade-long stretch (maybe less than half since they get pulled earlier in games these days). But also, from 1920 when the first pitcher WS HR happened (coinciding pretty much with the introduction of the HR) up until 1965 there were a total of only six ['20, '24 (2), '26, '40, '58] so there's little other way to look at that '65-'74 stretch than just a fluke.
  24. The Nats have just been Rodney'd It was only a matter of time.
  25. Who is 'EJerez'? oe: Ernesto Jerez - looks like someone possibly from ESPN Deportes So this report is Gomez citing Jerez that Perez has been hired. Sounds EZ to me.
