  1. In that aspect I don't know that the NYM clubhouse was all that different from others.

  3. Nice to hear Bill Pulsipher talk about mental health Forgive my ignorance but I'm not in the states. Has mental health been a taboo subject in baseball kinda like hockey? For example, Derek Boogard issues at the Rangers/Wild never really came out in full until after his passing. As well as similar issues for the likes of Jordan TooToo who has discussed them openlysince retiring. Not being mentally "tough" has long been seen as a sign of weakness in sports. As Ronnie said, not only would that not have been accepted as an excuse in his day but you'd be ridiculed for even bringing it up. The difference between what Pulsipher went through and the hockey players you bring up is that weren't their issues caused by, or at keast exacerbated by, physical trauma brought on by the game itself.
  4. Once again with the automatic mound visit when a PH is announced. I can't for the life of me understand why that exception is allowed.

  6. Hard working inning. Lots of pitches. Several generous B/S calls. Lucky to get out of there with just one scored.
  7. That's three ABs for Cron in the first ten innings of this series where he's hit w/2 runners on. We've gotten away with it so far but won't forever.

  9. Yeah, even when games were moving along at a decent clip in recent years the breaks would often get slammed on when the 7th inning rolled around.
  10. Marlins lost in Wrigley so the win tonight breaks our temporary tie with them in the standings. Braves getting thumped by Baltimore. Phils are also right on our tails but are down 5-3 in the 7th hosting Boston. And the Yanx got down 4-0 to Tampa. Came back and tied them up. Then lost 5-4 So all this good news tonight is making me reconsider my pledge from yesterday to start guzzling paint thinner.
  11. =kcmets post_id=124504 time=1683336208 user_id=53] DANG, official Game Time = 2:10!
  12. Edgy MD wrote: A little surprised to see Nido stay in the game leading off the bottom of the eighth. Less surprised to see him whiff, sadly. Buck stuck with Nido here and Vogey (rather than, say, Cahna) vs a LHP w/a runner in the earlier frame.
  13. So since he got plunked by the liner, does this Doyle character go down as a pinch-runner or a pinch-hitter?
  14. Y'know what the best thing about that call on the Bartolo HR is? ... that Mad Dog Russo absolutely hated it!!
  15. Hey, a 1-2-3 inning for Senga! He had the 1-2 down pat earlier but took him five tries to find the 3
  16. - I was calling for Lindor to go for it - I don't overturn that - he needed a slightly later slide
  17. Ya hope he saved at least some of the money he made in between his purchase of the Cadillac Escalade in which he cruised into his first ST and all the powder he bought later on.
  18. Yeah, although it's not like they were scoring runs in the 1st when Nimmo was the hottest batter on the planet for a couple of weeks. I mean ... FIVE?!? Really?
  19. The Mets have been out-scored 26 to 5 in the 1st inning over the first 32 games of the season. Discuss
  20. I'm beginning to lose hope for a comeback.
  21. Both can be true, but injured and overused pitchers -- whether that's actual result of more innings thrown or merely a perceived one -- cost teams a lot more than OT for vendors and cleaning crews. btw, Game 1 today: 11 runs, 17 hits, 2:04 Where's that game at the 2:04 mark in recent years? Top 6th maybe?
  22. It's pretty stupid that they keep the roof closed every day in Phoenix and Miami just because it's hot outside. Babies. At least back when they had Johnson & Shilling the DBacks used to let that night's starting pitcher decide whether it would be open roof or closed and they'd always pick closed because the ball tended to travel less far, or at least they believed it did. Not sure if there was data to back that up or not. But in post-season, specifically 2001, MLB was calling the shots and they decided that the roof would stay open, probably for aesthetic reasons but also because it was November by that point. So after allowing a HR the cameras clearly caught R.J., never exactly Mr. Warmth to begin with, mouthing "close the fucking roof!" for all viewers to see (I claim no talent in reading lips but even I could read that one). Of course in the famous 9th inning of Game 7 it actually started to drizzle in Phoenix possibly contributing to Mariano's foot slipping as he tried for a force play at 2B on a bunt resulting in a poor throw and a start to the game/WS-winning rally. So the open-roof breaks wound up going both ways as a result.
  23. Frayed Knot wrote: The major crime in that inning was plunking Baez with a 1-2 pitch (the 0-2 pitch was poor too). Other than that, the mis-played bloop in RF set it all up. When he was with the Mets he would have had to bribe someone to get on base three times in a game, and he's scored three runs today. Baez had, By Far, the highest OBA of his career during his (partial) season as a NYM (.371 vs nothing better than .326) so this is hardly the time for 'he sucked for us so why is he good now?' arguments. The point is that, once down 0-2, there's no reason to throw Baez a strike since he's so prone to chasing. The problem was that Adam O's next two weren't sharp, the first was so far outside even J.B. wouldn't chase and the other so far inside that Houdini couldn't have avoided getting hit. He needed better 'bad' pitches there but didn't make them. Maybe that's the result of a week off caused by multiple rainouts, or maybe not. But that, combined with the poorly played bloop, paved the way for the killer two runs in an inning where the Tigers hit exactly one ball hard. oe: cross-posted with Edgy
  24. Edgy MD wrote: MLB.tv is routinely bringing me back from breaks two batters into the next half inning. I haven't noticed that although there have been some close calls. OTOH, commercial and cable stations have been missing first and second pitches on telecasts here and there for decades now so only some of the blame can be hung on speedy play rules. Every time I see this sort of data I think about how awful, terrible, and now completely unjustified the ghost runner rule is. The ghost runner rule is strictly an attempt aimed at saving bullpen arms that's been masquerading as a Covid and/or pace of play rule since 2021. One could make a case for its justification in 2020, but the claims of 'we still need to be vigilant' (2021) and the excuse about how it was needed due to reduced ST time following the lockout (2022) were nothing other than bullshit to give it a three year head start before making a permanent continuation seem like nothing more than carrying on what was already established practice backed up by dubious claims of "the fans love it" so we listened to them! GMs, I'm sure, were mostly the ones pushing for it. Maybe traveling secretaries as well. Oh, and people who hate baseball like it, or at least claim to, because it results in ... wait for it ... Less Baseball!!! And, remember, none of that above data has anything to do with extra inning games no matter what rules were being used. The problem was never that extra inning games took too long it was that it often took over three hours just to get to extra innings. But, like the DH rule, it was brought in as an experimental fix only to hang around, presumably forever, long after the conditions which spawned its birth no longer existed. Transparency and honesty were never part of the story behind either.
